The last time a hurricane hit Long Island was in 1985 with Gloria. Assuming it'll stay a category 1, this'll be my first. Outside of a lot of wind, I'm not really in a danger zone so I'm not too worried about the storm. I'm prepared for the worst, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Hurricanes in general alwasy catch people offguard for several reasons.. all they look as is the sustained winds and what category it is. I wish people would look at the other crap. This sucker is only moving 15 mph.. that's.. it.. it's 250 miles wide from the eye.. that's several states in size.. and the bigger problems is the intense production of rain. This one is not a dry storm.. it won't go away quickly.. it lingers dropping rain without ceasing.. I know we are going to get hammered with water.. that alone will cause more issues than any wind will. IF we get hurricane gusts with a foot of rain on the ground.. Lord helps us all. It's going to take up to 15 hours just to get past all of this... that's a friggin' long time and for those who don't understand why we fear these things.. you are going to find out.

You know what would be really fun. If you drive into the eye of the storm, and than drove at 14 miles per hour with it

If you drive into the eye of the storm, and than drove at 14 miles per hour with it LMFAO good luck driving in the ocean Though seriously.. it would be impossible simply because of the debris from the outgoing eyewall tearing crap up at 100 mph and creating obstacles in-front of you..

On a good note, no work for me. =D. Also, there's parking in Manhattan! On a serious note, Irene looks to be hooking east a slight bit.

A co-worker of mine knows a guy in the airforce who flies through these hurricanes, he said there's something really eerie about this hurricane. It may only have category 1 winds, but the eyes has more of a potential for category 3 like force.

Glad you don't have to work Robby I'm praying it hooks east. I know we won't escape the rain but even just losing some of those winds will be nice. Still prepared either way. I won't be at all upset if it weakens more.

I'm in Philly, been raining all day, now getting heavier. We aren't getting the winds and really heavy rain until a few hours still. The center is still in North Carolina.

Jersey started getting rain around 10 am and hasn't stopped but it's nothing. This sucker is nowhere near us and just the far outer bands. We won't get the winds until like 3am..

The Weather Channel (which has been a mess by the way) says that Irene should be treated as a category 2 rather than 1 due to its sheer size.
There have been 6 deaths some of which were actually storm related. Stay indoors and avoid being near windows.
BTW, the Weather Channel has had some hilarious bloopers tonight. A lot of people were goofing off behind reporters. The best though was when Al Roker finished his on-the-scene segment and when they went back to the studio, the news anchor was caught live with a mouth full of food (some of which was seen flying out his mouth as he talked. ;D)

This kind of feels like the day this spring we had here in Oklahoma where the day before they knew bad things were about to happen.
The atmosphere was totally unstable and storms were on the way, and in Oklahoma you know what that means... tornados galore. It was so bad a friend on mine on facebook that has a meteorology degree posted something like, "i hope the death toll tomorrow from the storms will be zero, but i doubt it will be." Many people left the state, I considered it, but decided to stick it out.
To sum it up, it did'nt quite do what everyone feared, there were a handful of big tornados, one was about 2 miles from my house, but overall all things considered, pretty quiet.
That fear I had where you know the next day is going to be a very bad day, but there's really not a thing you can do about it, all you can do is hope your time isn't up. That must be what those people are feeling right now, and it's really tough.
