I imagine they might have a problem with golf shoes, as they have metal spikes which would damage the course, but other than that I think you're good, you can wear whatever you want. The five fingers grip a basketball court great....though I don't know why your regular shoes would lose grip. Is there some kind of waxy film they're picking up? I can't comment of the bikila model five fingers as I've never tried them, I have a pair of flows. I'll mention though that I take a size smaller in KSO's as I do in Flow's because of how stretchy the KSO fabric is. I used to train in Converse All-Stars all the time and I like how thin and not cushy they are for a lot of things. Then I started experimenting with some trail running and approach shoes from La Sportiva and EVOLV and I liked the added traction on many surfaces as well as the added cushion for jumping down from heights. I should mention that several versions of the La Sportiva trail running shoes grip well on many rough and smooth surfaces (which is why I used them at Sasuke). The EVOLVE approach and parkour shoes grip AMAZINGLY well on many rough surfaces like rock and concrete, but on many artificial surfaces like plexiglass and even super slick cement you just have zero traction (like Caine Sinclair in the spiderwalk, his 5.10 Freerunners have a very similar rubber compound.....I told all those pk guys not to use those shoes!). so here's my official verdict: Converse: Good for training and cheap, but you could get something with better traction for a competition. (I've been curious to try this new Converse with a Vibram sole though) La Sportiva trail running shoes: Good all around traction, good choice for competition. Evolve approach/parkour shoes & 5.10 Freerunners: Amazingly awesome for wall runs on brick and concrete, and the traction you get on a lot of surfaces is fun to play with, but sometimes you hit a surface that has ZERO traction with these, so never never use them for competition! New Balance 9.10: Very good traction on all surfaces, same rubber as Five Fingers, and it's ok to get them wet. Very good choice for competition. Five Fingers: Very good traction on all surfaces, and it's ok to get them wet. The super thin sole and glove-like fit reduces the chances of tripping. Very good choice for competition. (just be careful not to stub your toe or jump off any roofs in these) Man, good thing I read this now. I was JUST about to go and order a pair of 5.10s! I've been using my KSO's off and on to train in, and strangely enough, I don't feel as sure-footed in them. Jumping on stuff hurts like hell, too! Haven't Levi and Orosco used freerunning shoes in past Sasukes? (although I do recall Brian wearing the Vibrams at one point

Was debating on whether to start a new thread or not since there hasn't been a post in ages, but this one only has 2 pages anyway. Even though I like my Vibram KSOs, I'm still looking for a pair of non-toe shoes. I've been checking out this new line of shoes by Merrell called their Barefoot Collection coming later this year. For those who are turned off by them fandangled toe thingies on the VFFs, but still want something that gives you a barefoot-like or minimalist feel, this might be worth checking out. These look to be a bit thicker, so maybe along the lines of the KSO Trek, or even slighter thicker than that. They'll come in different styles, but they'll all use the same Vibram sole: For the fellas, Trail Glove for rugged applications: True Glove for crossfit, running, training: Tough Glove for casual or work: For the ladies: Power Glove... it's an open boot thing: Pace Glove for crossfit, training, running: Pure Glove for casual or work: All pictures taken from this blog if you wanna read more about them and check out all the colors: birthdayshoes.com/merrell:I like the look of the Trail Glove. Fortunately, there's a Merrell store at our nearby outlet mall so I'm definitely going to try them out whenever they're released.

The only thing I want to point out is that I (and tons of other lifters, apparently) have found that flat canvas shoes seem to be better when lifting, particularly during the squat and deadlift. Converse, for example, is a flat canvas shoe. Something about improving the power transfer, or something. I don't know, but they feel awesome. Now for running, jumping, etc., then yeah. Go for a real shoe. Something with padding and whatnot.

It's Spring, so my quest for shoes continues! Here are some minimalist/barefoot shoes I think are interesting, Terra Plana's VIVOBAREFOOTImages from their site: www.vivobarefoot.com/us/Neo Evo II The soles all seem to have the same design The down side is that their prices are really high. Altra RunningImages from their site: altrarunning.com/The Adam (for the fellas) The Eve (for the ladies) MarugoImage from this site: www.jika-tabi.com/Products/sportsjog-black.htmlSports Jog Jika-Tabi [/img]
Also, with the Merrell Barefoot line released, I'll probably be checking out the shoes later this month at their store nearby.

In my opinion, most of those are flat out ugly and most likely not worth the money. What are you finding shoes for? Spider climbing? Running? Parkour?

Shoes are for pussies. The only thing on my feet when I run is skin. I remember when i was younger i'd play soccer in my garden with no shoes; it was mostly concrete. It's left my feet in quite bad shape but they are very tough. So yeah, man up and wear no shoes!

I don't care when it comes to shoes vs. no shoes. I see the Vibram "they're super thin, they'll strengthen your feet" stuff is just a crappy advertising angle since being barefooted would do the same thing.
Regardless of whether or not you wear shoes when you run (or if you do, what kind you wear), the important thing is HOW you run. I'd say that over 90% of people don't know how to run properly in the first place. They land either heel-first, with a ton of force or a combination of the two. This leads to a long list of problems, the top few probably being ankle pain, foot pain and shin splints. It doesn't have to be that way...

Wearing no shoes when training just sounds dangerous to me. There seems to be plenty of options that replicate bare feet that still protect from things like rocks, glass, rough edges, etc.
I understand the concept of barefoot running, but I don't see how it's doable unless you're running on grass, a treadmill, or on a indoor track.

If you're running barefooted through a path full of rocks, glass and rough edges, you're an idiot anyway and shoes weren't going to help.

I don't think you're being an a**, jfeathe. I understand what you're saying. You really have to know where you're running and whether it's a garbage dump or not. I know the grass around here from all the tricking I do, so if I want to run barefooted, it's not a problem.
If you really want to run barefooted for some reason but you seriously cannot find a good place to do it, buy some thin shoes that offer no support and go running. It won't make a difference.
UPDATE: Just watched something where a personal trainer and orthopedic surgeon were arguing about Vibram five fingers. The trainer was basically all, "they're super natural and they strengthen your feet and stuff!". The surgeon pointed out that that was BS and he's actually seeing more and more injuries and, as a result, corrective surgeries from people wearing those shoes.
Moral of the story: Don't follow fads, people.

Okay, so I'm looking for a good trail running shoe with good traction and a bit of cushion for jumping down off of things...as I plan to use them for my parkour training as well as obstacle training.
I was looking at the La Sportiva Wildcat or the Scarpa Epic. Does anyone have any experience with either or an alternative suggestion...I'm trying to keep these under $120 since I'm going to probably be extremely rough on them in training.
EDIT: Nevermind, after talking with some friends of mine and researching online, I decided to grab a pair of La Sportiva Fireblades from Zappos. I figured worst comes to worst, I can always return them thanks to Zappos' crazy/awesome return policy.

I wasn't really considering any of the shoes I recently posted. Just thought they were interesting. However I am considering the Merrills
Anyway...
Chances are, people following fads don't fully understand how or why they're supposed to do what they're meant to do, which would result in injury or undesirable results or no results (kind of like all those fancy new diets they keep coming up with every year, or people who go to the gym and don't do things with proper form or thinking they have to run a treadmill at moderate speeds for over an hour to burn calories or they just don't work as hard as they could.
Sometimes when I see pictures or video of people running marathons in Vibrams, I see a lot of them heel-striking... and that's terrible. Barefoot/minimalist shoes just allow you to run as you naturally would without shoes, but with some protection for your feet. However, when you're still heel-striking regardless, then no shoe in the world will fix that.
As Oti said, it's definitely about how your run. And to add to some of the top problems that arise from heel-striking, also knee and back problems, like I used to have. When I watch my sister run around, I see her forefoot striking even though she has a pair of Adidas and a pair of Nikes. It's like kids naturally run as they're meant to, but as they grow up, most of them, for whatever reason, are conditioned to strike with their heels.
