I've been looking for a new pair of shoes and I'm curious to know what kind of shoes people are wearing these days for training, specific sports, everyday, etc. So that's my primary purpose for this thread. Now my secondary is more of a quick little question about the Vibram FiveFingers for anyone who has them or has tried them... I'm thinking of getting the KSO and I'm wondering how well they grip indoor courts because I plan on using them in my Volleyball class as well. My shoes lose their grip after every other rally so I have to step off the court and stomp/rub them on whatever-material-surrounds-the-outside-of-the-court so they can grip and squeek on the court again. Also, I'm wondering if I should hold out and wait to try Vibram's new Bikila model which has an interesting new sole design. It's supposed to come out next month. birthdayshoes.com/the-performa-jane-a-better-look-at-the-euro-only-fivefingers-speed-and-the-fivefingers-bikila-soles

Most people will probably point you in the direction of the current trend, which seems to be the FiveFinger things. I can't say anything about this since I've never tried them. I just get the cheapest ones I can find at Wal-mart. I kill shoes in three months anyway, no matter the price or brand, so I figured why bother spending the money? My shoes typically have decent grip, but spider climbing on my replica can be a bit tricky. This is most likely because the walls are wearing down, however. On other (better) surfaces, I can climb just fine. Right now, I'm wearing these: ...only they're completely black, as if that matters.

More expensive shoes don't make me run faster lol so I never bother buying the expensive ones, I think it's all a big scam but I'm no expert on the subject.

I have a question about shoes myself and have been meaning to make a thread about it as well actually. Are there any restrictions on the shoes you can wear on the show? Alot of people I see wearing those ninja style 2 toe shoes and it got me wondering because I dont want to train in a specific pair then have to change them when it counts? I train in skate shoes and they work really well to be honest.

There are no restrictions as far as we know. Not that I've ever heard of.

Well, I use skate shoes too sometimes, but I always feel like they're slipping away even if I tie them properly; I prefere running shoes, since I've been using them for years and at this point I'm no longer used to other shoes. I was wondering about getting Five Fingers too, they seem comfortable..but then I remembered I have the same problem as Oti. I destroy shoes in two months or three.

I imagine they might have a problem with golf shoes, as they have metal spikes which would damage the course, but other than that I think you're good, you can wear whatever you want.
The five fingers grip a basketball court great....though I don't know why your regular shoes would lose grip. Is there some kind of waxy film they're picking up?
I can't comment of the bikila model five fingers as I've never tried them, I have a pair of flows. I'll mention though that I take a size smaller in KSO's as I do in Flow's because of how stretchy the KSO fabric is.
I used to train in Converse All-Stars all the time and I like how thin and not cushy they are for a lot of things. Then I started experimenting with some trail running and approach shoes from La Sportiva and EVOLV and I liked the added traction on many surfaces as well as the added cushion for jumping down from heights. I should mention that several versions of the La Sportiva trail running shoes grip well on many rough and smooth surfaces (which is why I used them at Sasuke). The EVOLVE approach and parkour shoes grip AMAZINGLY well on many rough surfaces like rock and concrete, but on many artificial surfaces like plexiglass and even super slick cement you just have zero traction (like Caine Sinclair in the spiderwalk, his 5.10 Freerunners have a very similar rubber compound.....I told all those pk guys not to use those shoes!).
so here's my official verdict:
Converse: Good for training and cheap, but you could get something with better traction for a competition. (I've been curious to try this new Converse with a Vibram sole though)
La Sportiva trail running shoes: Good all around traction, good choice for competition.
Evolve approach/parkour shoes & 5.10 Freerunners: Amazingly awesome for wall runs on brick and concrete, and the traction you get on a lot of surfaces is fun to play with, but sometimes you hit a surface that has ZERO traction with these, so never never use them for competition!
New Balance 920: Very good traction on all surfaces, same rubber as Five Fingers, and it's ok to get them wet. Very good choice for competition.
Five Fingers: Very good traction on all surfaces, and it's ok to get them wet. The super thin sole and glove-like fit reduces the chances of tripping. Very good choice for competition. (just be careful not to stub your toe or jump off any roofs in these)

I train in my reliable old Reebok trainers, which have lasted me a good year or so... although they're starting to show the signs of it... a tear or hole here and there. Perhaps I should be thinking about buying some new trainers... if I had any money that is ;D I've had these since before I took up PK, and they seem to have decent grip and weight etc. so they're just fine. I wouldn't have the money to blow on a £100 pair of shoes that I'd probably finish in a few months anyway lol

I went to a place called Luke's Locker a few hours ago and the people there are really nice. Anyway, they didn't have the ones I wanted in stock, so they called around to other stores and turns out there's a massive shortage, retail and online. I did get to try on a pair of KSO Treks that were a couple sizes too big just to get a feel. I also played around with the KSO they had on display, just pressing it down on different surfaces and dragging it and I was amazed by the grip. They said they'd get a new shipment in sometime next month, and with the Bikila coming next month as well, I guess that works out fine because I'll get to try those out too.

Back in the day when I had some Converse, they were actually pretty grippy, but like David said, there's no cushion (or arch support). I don't recommend them for anything where you'll be landing on hard surfaces.

A few things that have helped all my shoes last for 3+ years are buying shoes that fit very snug, so they don't wrinkle so much when you move in them, having a few pairs of shoes and alternating them day to day, wear cheap shoes to work and put the expensive ones on for training, and just be concious of shoe wear. Try not to let your feet slip when you're climbing etc. and don't let the unprotecte upper of the shoe rub on stuff.
Though as good as I am with shoes I did wear out a $20 pair of Nevados Ambush from Big 5 in ONE DAY from doing wall runs on a rough wall. Hole all the way through the sole.....they took 'em back and gave be a new pair, but I hardly wear them 'cause I'm afraid I'll kill them again. They're really sticky on smooth surfaces, but are so soft that they can't take any kind of roughness.

Oddly enough, I DO take good care of my shoes, aside from the alternating thing. I only have one pair because I'M A MAN. But the work thing doesn't apply to me since I don't work, so... it balances out? I wanna try those Ambush things.

They're really good for doing precisions onto metal or painted rails...if you watch my ANC4 video I'm wering them when I jump from the rail to the other rail and then back. Might actually be good for Sasuke with the plexiglass and smooth painted wood warped wall?
The thing I don't like is that they fit my feet weird....going to try a different insole maybe?

For training , I just wear running shoes. I think they are Adidas , I'm not sure. I usually have to get new shoes every year.
When I'm not training , I usually wear my army boots. I've had this pair for about 7years. And they still aren't worn out. These are also great for climbing. But a bit akward for my normal training.

I was reading an article in the daily star (Worst newspaper in Britain by far) and it said Reebok trainers are the most common trainers used by burglars and thieves, as apparently they don't leave much of a footprint behind. Just a little bit of trivia there!

I got my KSO's yesterday. I bought them online. I wanted to support my local economy though, but I wasn't sure if it was worth it if it meant waiting 3+ weeks in order to do so. Anyway, I walked around the house and did some stretching with them for a bit.
Today I wore them for Volleyball class, but the teacher decided to have us do these drills which involved a lot of running, but it felt so natural, I was running and sprinting all over the place and I didn't feel tired at all. I also wore them with the Injinji socks because my feet sweat a lot. It was pretty neat though because before and after class, some people would come up and ask me about these and some of them even knew about these already.
After class when I took them off, my feet didn't hurt or ache like they normally do. Just one day with these and I'm totally set.
