I'm suprised nobody has sugested the old faithful Ninja Tabi boot. I haven't tried them myself (yet) but i would probably choose them when i get on Sasuke (notice i said 'when' not 'if'). Plus i'm sure i've seen some of the All Stars favouring them during their runs of the course. I use cheapies for training as they usually only last about 3 months anyway. The constant kung fu stancework destroys them pretty quick (and the local environment).

Haha. Yes, yes. We're all confident in our abilities.
You're definitely right on their durability. I hardly wore mine and already they're starting to come apart. It's mostly where the rubber on the bottom meets the fabric that covers the big toe.
As far as using them on the course, I'm sure they wouldn't be the worst things to use. A lot of Japanese competitors wear them, simply because they're common Japanese footwear. The only problem is that they have a very unique "feel" to them. I'd recommend buying a couple of pairs and wearing/training in them a lot to adapt.
I recently thought of (and have been trying) this: training in shoes with poor grip anyway. This will train me to be ready to apply great pressure in case I begin to slip.

Thats interesting, i will have to try that. thanks for the advice. Just want to clarify, i didn't mean to come across as arrogant, i just think that a positive mental attitude is needed when trying to acheive Kanzenseiha, especially now that Sasuke has become so hard for us gaijin to compete in btw liking the kung fu slippers.

Oh, alright. It was just the fact that you went out of your way to say that that made it seem arrogant. No worries. Kung Fu slippers? Not yet. I've actually been considering getting some, though, so your statement is creepy. They just haven't seemed worth it lately.

I recently thought of (and have been trying) this: training in shoes with poor grip anyway. This will train me to be ready to apply great pressure in case I begin to slip. I've actually started doing that myself during the spider climb, my typical shoes for everyday are not grippy at all and are way too loose to the point where they can fall off on the spider flip, it makes my legs try soo much harder that its a great workout and definitely a good strategy for anybody wanting to upgrade their training methods.

Since we're on the topic of split-toe design (I think), I was playing Mirror's Edge the other day and I got interested in the character's shoes. No one makes them, but I found out that Nike used to make shoes with the split-toe design called Nike Air Rift. They came out back in the mid-90's and they weren't very popular at the time. And these ones are the Nike Ikoi There's also a Puma Parkour Concept that also uses split-toe www.tonyhardman.com/Puma_Parkour_Concept.php

The white ones don't look very grippy. Do you know how they are? Might be worth hunting down a pair.

I have no idea. Apparently they have two different soles. A search shows up all these generic wholesalers that all look the same, but here's one for example with better pictures www.nike-dealers.com/nike-shoes-air-rift-c-9_358.htmlThe 42$ ones look like they're made for more rugged applications while the 45$ ones are for everything else or maybe to feel more natural? I also came across the Air Rift IV which is like the 42$ one but it has two straps at the top. Seeing these sort of makes me wanna get a pair just because they're different.

Mmmm. Hard to tell how grippy they'd be. All I know is that it definitely doesn't go by price tag. My $15 shoes from Wal-mart have way better grip than $70+ shoes I've found in the mall. Personally, I have a new pair of shoes coming from Australia. They're called Dunlop Volleys and, according to my girlfriend's Aussie cousin, they're supah grippeh. We'll see.

Yeah, I don't trust any of those sites. They're all from China and they litter the search results. Maybe I can find something on ebay.
Tell us about the Dunlop Volleys when you get them. Even though I like my Vibrams, I'm still looking for a pair of shoes.

While I haven't personally tried tabby boots running with them, I have worn them and they seemed really grippy. I don't think there anything like the KSO's however. The vibram sole lasts a LOT longer anyways.

I've never really been into them, though they're fairly big here. Most people I know wear them for comfort/style though I've seen some people at school wear them for sport. I personally wouldn't touch them cause I like having a lot of support and cushioning, like in basketball shoes. But tell us how they go, I'm interested.

No way I'd trust those white Nike shoes. They look exactly on the bottom like the shoes that failed me at ANW!
NOT TRUSTING!
Gonna buy a pair of KSO's right before I fly out anyway.

Chris, you should buy a pair and make sure they work for a little bit before you fly out.

Oh, I will be. Gonna buy them about a month before, so I just don't wear out the grip and rubber like my Flow's I've been wearing every day since post-ANW.

Shoes are extremely specific to your type of foot. A type of shoe that may be good for someone else may not be useful to you at all. The only thing you can really do is troll shoe stores till he find a pair that works.

The only thing you can really do is troll shoe stores till he find a pair that works. Good advice! The shoes that failed Chris (North Face Mountain Sneaker) are the same ones Travis wore at ANW, and he just bought a second pair after wearing his old ones out. He says they're his favorite parkour shoe. So yeah, different shoes work better for different people. Also sometimes one batch of shoes can be a little different than the ones they made the previous month, so it's best to pick 'em up in person if you can.

Got my Dunlop Volleys in the mail a week or so ago. After breaking them in, I'm fairly certain I'll be wearing them in L.A.. They're super thin with pretty decent grip. Almost like tabi boots, really.
