I'm about to date myself with this question, but here goes.
when did the "bite the medal like a cowboy making sure the coin is real" thing start happening?
pretty much every picture i see has them doing that.
somebody told me "oh it's tradition" but they didn't do that in the 1970s and 80's, nor the 90's (last olympics i watched had Kurt Angle gold medaling with a broken freakin' neck)

I absolutely despise that one chance rule for false starts. You shouldn't have your olympic dreams crushed just because you jumped the gun a little bit.

False starts were abused a LOT when I was younger. I'm assuming they tightened rule that because a lot of people used to do that on purpose to rattle the field so they alone got the advantage. It's almost impossible to know these days if they did it on purpose or not. I didn't watch Olys last night to know what happened - just going by historic evidence.

I'm a high school swimmer, and in high school swimming obviously there's a number of differences, from the length of the pool to the length of events, etc. But I know that they have a 2 false start rule before you're disqualified, and obviously we're not as good, but it's definitely interesting to see the difference between high school and the olympics. Obviously for my sake I prefer 2 false starts but when you are as good as those guys are, it makes sense to have just 1.

I'm a HS swimmer as well. Typically, if it happens to have a person making a false start for once, that person is DQ. But if the machine malfunctions or someone typically interferes, that person is granted to go up the blocks again. It's weird how false starts are considered to be a big topic in terms of racing of how it should be.
