Now that it's getting closer to the date and some tweets with the pics are there I figured I'd post something. Not doing a blog post until I get a bit more information (and waiting on other stuff) but for those who have been following my twitter feed.. Makoto Nagano is getting a brand spankin' new boat. It's almost done and it was at the docks just yesterday. p.twipple.jp/7cCrHEdit: Totally forgot this part. The name of the Ship is the 50th Konpiramaru. In the past I have said that the 28th is the age of the Captain of the ship. I was correct in one way. The captain of the previous Ship Nagano was a captain of had a previous captain... that previous captain was 28 years old when he got that ship so in honor of him Nagano kept the number on the ship. This new one "50" was chosen by Nagano for his new ship. Obviously he is not 50 years old.. LOL He just turned 40. So for some reason he chose 50. I'll see what I can find. Also, there are a lot of boats under Konpiramaru all owned by Takasui. The person who posted this pic is the Captain of the big blue ship 76th Konpiramaru.. and it's obvious from following on twitter.. he's not 76 years old.. LOL Officially he gets it in May. He spent the past couple of months just getting certifications and renewing old ones. Seems this one is top of the line so he had to learn new stuff. And for those who like looking at em'.. teheheheh p.twipple.jp/kgNOIThat's his latest pic. Posing for the company when they were doing a celebration dinner. In other, slightly connected news.. the company whom Nagano works for is opening up another couple restaurants this week as well.. so needless to say.. it's a pretty damn busy time in the life of Takasui Corp.

Well, I guess now we know what his piece is 28's Navi will be about (provided that 28 actually happens). Thanks for letting us know about this arsenette! Hopefully Nagano enjoys his new ship! BTW, do you know what's going to happen to his previous boat? Is it going to another fisherman?

It's been pretty rundown and I remember it being recalled a couple times for repairs in the past two years. That certainly is a possibility. I figured they would sell it but I honestly don't know.

Wow. This one looks a lot bigger than the Konpira Maru 28! Any word on what the "50" stands for?

Wow. This one looks a lot bigger than the Konpira Maru 28! Any word on what the "50" stands for? Yeah I posted that .. er. uh.. hmm.. not sure which thread.. LOL this information has been spread out through different threads because I put it in one blog with multiple items on it The #50 is the age of his boss Mr. Takasu. He did it as a tribute to him. He's very close to him. So close that G4 confused him for his father in Sasuke 17.. But yeah it's for him. The #28 as I was told was the age of the captain of the boat. I was under the impression that it was Nagano's age.. but it wasn't. It was the age of the previous captain and he kept it as a tribute to him when Nagano became captain. Nagano himself wasn't 28 at the time. Seems the numbers are random in what they represent (as there are 2 ships with #'s in the 70's (#76 and #77 and both Captains are in their 40's in age) but they do pick the numbers themselves. I mistakenly thought it was the age of the person when they became captain.

That's cool. I didn't remember seeing that in any other threads. I must have missed it. It's great that Nagano has such a good relationship with his boss. Although I was kinda surprised that Nagano didn't choose something like 79 (age of Yasuke when he died) or 32 (year Yasuke was born).

Although I was kinda surprised that Nagano didn't choose something like 79 (age of Yasuke when he died) or 32 (year Yasuke was born). I never expected him to name the ship after his father. Takasui Corp built Nagano from a deckhand years ago. Remember he started fishing right after Junior high graduation and never went to high school. Mr. Takasu hand picked him to be in his fleet and promoted him up to Captain. He's also been ridiculously supportive with everything in his life including Sasuke. Not that Yasuke hasn't but he has a different relationship with Mr. Takasu. Yasuke also never worked alongside Makoto anyway. Especially since this ship (50th) was built specifically for Nagano and given to him by Takasu personally I figured it would be tied to him in some way. It's because of Mr. Takasu that he was even given the opportunity to be a Captain in the first place. Seems fitting given the history between Takasu and Nagano. No disrespect to Yasuke's memory IMO.

Btw I'm trying to get the dimensions of the #28 Konpiramaru for comparison purposes.. but this one is definitely bigger. It's 31 meters long (102 feet long) and displaces 57 tons. The 28th was the smallest ship in the fleet and the 2 other ships even close are the 76 and 77 ships are 28.5m 19 tons so that alone is a big difference. Found a great website for explaining it: www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/measurement.htm Still trying to find the numbers (asked the 76 captain and will let you know if he knows or answers) to compare but 50th is definitely bigger.

That's awesome. So is this one more technologically advanced? I guess Nagano will have to learn a little about computers, LOL.

I was told he was very busy all this year doing re-certifications and new ones because this new ship required it. I'm excited to see what this one has. The last one he had was pretty basic. I wonder if he's also going up the chain in where his boat is lined up with the fleet.. if it's bigger than the 76 and 77 already... he's no longer the "grunt" ship. I wonder if he's actually doing the chasing now.. that's... difficult.

Hmm, I hadn't thought about that. He may not be doing the uploading (?) anymore. Maybe he'll actually be catching the fish. But if that's the case, wouldn't that mean that he'll be out at sea longer? Don't the big ships stay out on the ocean most of the time?

Don't the big ships stay out on the ocean most of the time? Not sure if his role will change honestly but given the past history as to what ships did what it makes me think he's up the chain a bit. Or.. same position hauling more fish? The displacement on the ship is literally THREE times the other 2 ships he was ranked with. The fact that he can carry more than the 2 ships combined makes me think that he's higher up the chain and expected to do something else. I went over the video of what his fleet does ( ramblingrican.blogspot.com/2010/06/makoto-nagano-on-tv-asahi-show-densetsu.html ) and either they are leaving him out there longer (his boat is still smaller than the big blue ship) or having him do less trips back to port to offload ship. Dunno yet. Overall everyone is working the same amount of time. They still fish 25 days (rough average) straight and 5 days off year round. The only difference is where they sleep. Sometimes the big blue ship stays out all day and night once they found where they are going to fish. The others come back to port, sleep, then go back out the following evening... basically leaving the blue ship to stake their territory to keep other rival companies from taking their fish. That's my understanding of it anyway. I just knew that Nagano's ship would go back and forth jostling for position to take back fish back to port. Each ship would be paid according to what they hauled back so competition for the chase boats have gotten intense. Only time will tell if his role in the fleet changed.

Wow. I knew some of that from watching the video once. And I remember a discussion on WebJam a few years ago when someone said that arguments often break out over which ship gets there first.

Preparations for the launching ceremony for Nagano's ship are done. It's tomorrow morning for them. In the meantime there's a pic of Nagano doing some work on it (dated last week) p.twipple.jp/ukAFF
