Not sure if here or in General Sasuke is a better place to put this, but I was one of the likely significant amount of people who just lost Esquire since DirectTV dropped it. As for watching Team Ninja Warrior, I know I could purchase it via Amazon or iTunes if you have an Apple device, but that is a la carte and a day late. Does anyone know if there are other means to get Esquire (preferably legal)? I'm actually considering cutting cable anyway soon and maybe moving to Sling or something of the like, but I haven't seen Esquire as one of their channels.
This is not even touching on the Sasuke dubs of 28-32 that are coming next year that likely will not even be available for purchase on Amazon, etc.

Thanks for coming up with the thread. This has been touched on earlier this year when Dish network dropped Esquire but now the bigger ones just did it over the past week. We talked briefly about it on the random thread but it really did need a discussion thread going. Here is a good a place as any since most of the Esquire things have been ANW spin off related. Anyway the recap is that AT&T (which owns both Direct TV and Uverse) just dropped Esquire from 25 million homes. Esquire was only in a few of those markets so the total impact is an additional 11 million from Direct TV and 4 from Uverse for that 15 million total. So Esquire' reach is only 45 million now. As a comparison G4 went through the same thing and look what happened to them. Last year Esquire was in over 120 million homes. Just in the past year it's more than half that and just this past week they lost 1/3 of what they had even after Dish network. There is growing speculation that Esquire will be gone by summer and even as early as March (end of 1st quarter) as NBCUniversal is pruning non-performing channels by first quarter 2017. Here's a speculation article. Esquire is not the only one on the chopping block since all of the "niche" channels are suffering through a major drop of their own. This one is a bit more high profile given how huge ANW is right now on NBC. Current Team Ninja is failing horribly right now not even registering on the ratings radar so unless something drastic happens with normal Team Ninja later in January I don't see the channel surviving. I questioned why they waited to get Ninja Warrior Japan episodes out next year.. they might have seen this coming? It seems odd. I'm really nervous now because I don't know if we'll ever see it now that this is looming. I don't see it airing on NBC. I do question however if it will air on another channel. In other news NBC plans to open up another channel... With that contract far more lucrative, I think we figured out where Esquire is going. What that means for Ninja Warrior in general (Any NBC reruns, ANW, Team Ninja (any edition) and of course NW Japan) is anyone's guess right now. While they are all sports.. I don't see how it would be on the channel since neither are Olympic Sports. As for legal ways it seems Episode 1 of College Madness is available without signing in to the Esquire network website. The rest though along with the rest of the Ninja Warriors are only through signing in to the Esquire site AND having Esquire on your cable package. I've been cable-less for several years so I've already relied on the community to get my copies. But, few people are doing that anymore since blt stopped (he lost his Esquire during the first purging earlier this year). Now with no one else picking up the slack there is no other way for anyone to see anything on Esquire's library.

"NBCU And Charter Extend Negotiations For New Retransmission Deal - Update" Update on Charter... At stake - another 16 million. This is bigger than just Esquire and for all NBC owned networks, I realized I forgot to mention this here when it became news in the wrestling world because of the possibility of Charter subscribers possibly losing USA Network. Although part of me figured to wait until something happened one way or another before deciding to share it here because this is a possibility of losing the channels rather than a guarantee, wouldn't be the first time last minute deals get made making news irrelevant

This affects all niche channels as they are all failing. It is the drawback of of having 500 channels that the pool of potential viewers keeps getting more and more diluted to the point where it makes it all pointless.

Well the NBCU/Charter dispute is more than just the niche channels but every channel owned by NBC Universal even the bigger ones but yeah, Esquire would end up on the chopping block (or at least temporarily) if they can't come to an agreement.

In the previous articles though it is mentioned that NBCUniversal is planning on getting rid of those channels anyway independent of the Charter dispute. The Charter dispute amplifies the situation and because it has all of the NBC properties including the big channels that can be negotiated differently. NBCUniversal is trying to make their franchise as a whole more appealing and by trimming the fat they are in essence making themselves more attractive to other markets. If Esquire's contract with NBCUniversal is not renegotiated, then that is gone since NBCUniversal has already gone on record that they plan on not signing for another year and no other outside company wants a failing channel. Hearst Media will be stuck with their half of the network without a buyer. This is worst than what happened when G4TV was dropped.. because it was still in essence a Comcast channel from the start. Esquire doesn't have the luxury.

It's not out of malice or anything.. it's just not a lot of people watch the channel as it is. The only reason I would even care is because Ninja Warrior (Japan) was supposed to debut on it. For ANW fans they didn't use Esquire to watch repeats and very little have any interest in Team Ninja Warrior as a franchise. That is sad because generally I liked the show last year. They moved TNW from airing in January to March which is odd considering that March is the month NBC Universal is going to drop their channels that are under performing. With Esquire not formally announcing when Sasuke was returning.. now I'm thinking ti's not coming to the USA after all.. or.. it will on Esquire when NBCUniversal drops the channel from their umbrella. That.. would be disastrous.

Yeah I hadn't payed much attention to the Charter issue because both I have an AT&T service for TV (DirecTV) and it had gotten enough response in the wrestling community that enough people are trying to write to Charter to tell them to come to an agreement (which while not a guarantee of anything, at the very least tells Charter there is enough demand to come to some agreement).
As for the content set for Esquire network before the plans to drop it, pretty curious what is going to happen to the ninja related shows because NBC likes to try to milk the money they spend and they've already dumped the money on filming TNW S2 and bought the Sasuke footage (As evidenced by the fact that TBS had already gotten the money to spend on S33 and K9, and had already legally obtained 31 to be used for the ANW7 USA vs The World special) so I'm curious what they're going to do with the footage they've already spent the money (and presumably editing time) on, Hopefully sending it to another network they own that's in more homes.

LOL Need I remind you of the money dump both G4TV and Monster 9 did trying to save themselves.. Sasuke 27 and ANW 3 anyone? Remember when TBS allowed the top Americans to air on USA television 2 months before Japan's official broadcast? Yeah.. so spending money on stuff before they die is kinda par for the course here. Usually too little too late.

I mean Sasuke 27 (or at least the ANW3 part of it) G4 managed to convince their parent company to put it on their main channel which managed to keep the show alive so theoretically they did get their moneys worth just not in the way they intended, hell without that Sasuke and Esquire Network probably would have died far sooner if not for ANW doing decently and catching on As for Monster9 well... Higuchi was a terrible money manager anyways so even whatever premium Comcast payed for those runs he was desperate for anyways but it wasn't enough to dig him out of the hole EDIT: Also I forgot the most obvious part of bringing that up, they ended up using it and not letting it sit to rot

Sasuke to this day has NEVER been on NBC. So that analogy didn't work. So if something doesn't change and Esquire goes down.. TBS is back to trying to find yet another network to show Nagano's retirement and Morimoto's win.

No, Sasuke has never been on NBC, but without NBC's money it'd be long dead is more the point I was tryign to make, it sucks for fans in america having no legitimate way to see the new footage after G4 died but the point I was making is at least there WAS footage... As for "Trying to find a new network" that's really not TBS's call, they sold the footage to NBCUniversal/Comcast already have somewhat of a deal with them (in that NBCUniversal keeps licensing the format of Sasuke), at this point it's more hoping NBC uses it on one of their networks.

NBC didn't save Sasuke. It died with Monster 9. The money they got from ANW3 was gone in bankruptcy court. Comcast also didn't buy the license when TBS bought the Sasuke back from the bankruptcy courts. So I'm not sure where you are getting that Sasuke lived longer because of NBC "saving" TBS. Did you forget there was ZERO Sasuke in the USA for the past 6 years? TBS has been living off scraps to get Sasuke done. That is why it was only 1 a year, no Kunoichi and a shoestring budge. As for trying for another network... that is EXACTLY TBS's call. Period. They are a business and they owners of the Sasuke license. If Ninja Warrior isn't being redone, they can't sell that nonexistent copy to 150 countries. If Esquire can't do it they have to find someone else to do so. Worldwide distribution is at stake. This is far bigger than the USA market.

This is far bigger than the USA market. I'm referring to the fact ANW has existed, they have to license out the format, while that's not much money it's some money and shows there's enough international demand for TBS to keep Sasuke alive even with the limited budget and also when they legally bought the 31 footage to use for USA vs The World 2 (Or 3 if you count USA vs Japan as part of that "series"). Also NBC already purchased at least some of the Rising tournaments so that would make it even more complicated if another channel NOT owned by NBC would want to try to pick it up, even more so with TBS licensing the format to NBC so they can keep ANW alive, which would bring on it's own whole set of issues over here. As for worldwide distribution, Challenge has produced an edit even if it is a dubbed one, that has been sold internationally as evidenced by it airing with another dub in Mexico, I would not be surprised if other countries that used the dub format might have picked that up and we haven't heard of it but that's speculation. Am I happy with the situation? No, but it's better than no one touching anything to do with it and Sasuke dying

I'm not sure you actually grasp how much losing Esquire will be to the license. What NBC does it completely independent of Sasuke. The spin offs around the world are ANW clones.. not Sasuke clones and ATS is the one making the money. If the case that the spin offs are keeping it alive.. then WTF did Sasuke have the least amount of budget ever? Did you forget the jankiness of the courses the past few years? They aren't getting "NBC money zomg Sasuke is popular".. no ANW is popular and not Sasuke. Sasuke Japan doesn't have to be relevant anymore because ANW is the new hotness. So if no one else is interested in Sasuke (and they haven't been) then it dies. NBC isn't going to save it.. it has it's own problems with failing shows like Team Ninja Warrior: College Madness that rated so badly it didn't even get a rating. It was a 0.0 rating. Nothing else has ever rated that low in the franchise. So if NBC decides their license is getting too thin.. guess what is in the chopping block.. yes you guessed it.. things that are not directly tied to ANW. Sasuke is not paid for by NBC. Esquire was the one paying the money to put something on their channel to save them because they need ratings badly. We may not get that at all if they fold before a single episode airs in the USA. We already have an example of what happened to Ninja Warrior when a channel folded.. Bellon Entertainment (the ones who ultimately own the NW license) kept their entire library under lock and key for years. That does NOTHING for Sasuke Japan.

And I never even brought up the subject of the international spinoffs by ATS, I was referring to the UK and Mexico airings of Sasuke Rising and the speculation of the possibility some of those other countries that used to buy G4 footage and dub them MIGHT have bought the UK edit. But that explains this whole argument, talking about two completely different things

They see that NBC is going to save everything when in fact they are the cause of exclusion here in the USA. So given that NBC hasn't bought the license but another company tangentially connected to ANW, the fact that this same company may be going out of business is of huge importance. This is 2011 all over again. As for "bought" Sasuke 31's license.. they didn't. They only asked if they could use clips and they agreed. No money was exchanged and no other footage was bought by NBC. They were caught stealing footage the previous tournament and wanted to make sure they didn't get caught again. That is vastly different than buying the license to show 3 seconds of footage for their show. Remember again that they then dropped Japan from the vs. World line up because they didn't need them anymore.
