There are no official ratings but a 2ch thread has it at 9.2.
So far only one station, NTV, released their numbers.
7.2% 快脳!マジかるハテナ 11.9% ぐるぐるナインティナイン 12.6% スペシャルドラマ「怪物」佐藤浩市×向井理×多部未華子 本格サスペンス!
Those shows ran from 7-8, 8-9, 9-11 roughly.

Thanks. I was wondering about it. I assume we have to wait for Wednesday to see the weekly update?
Hmm the fact that TBS hasn't mentioned anything about ratings is .. disturbing.

Final rating is a 9.6. Via www.videor.co.jp/data/ratedata/top10.htmIt did not finish in the top five for TBS for that week. It may have finished fourth or even possibly fifth for the day: dorasute.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-758.html【日本テレビ】 *7.2% 快脳!

I hate to say it, but... Is it time to change up SASUKE? It seems to consistently lose year after year, I'm starting to wonder how it's still on the air. Would it succeed better in a weekly format?
(Bear in mind I know nothing about Japanese TV so feel free to correct me)

I remember it being in Variety before when it was actually doing better in the ratings. And yes it has been several years so I apologize because these days everything is mixing in my head as to where they used to be and where they have been consistently lately.
Btw I asked Inui with the ratings how they are when/if Sasuke 30 is and he said he didn't know if there will be one after ASEAN.

Just have a Sasuke 30 in November with some international competitors. Also, why has Sasuke been getting low ratings the past few years? They used to have 20% ratings per tournament, sometimes higher than that.

They used to have 20% ratings per tournament, sometimes higher than that. They can't just ignore ASEAN. The date is set and other countries are making their preps and it's already been announced officially (with Sasuke 29 coverage being heavy on it) so it's going to happen one way or the other. TBS already is committed to airing ASEAN in Japan. I know that for a fact. The ratings have been on a slide for a long time now. And honestly aside from huge sports and variety shows (those with high celeb pull and years of history) we haven't seen 20% for any shows recently (much less from TBS). This show as well had no stars in it. It was just about as hardcore as you can get (with Sasuke famous people). I'm on the fence on how 30 can be handled. My gut wants a new Year's show again but I'm not sure TBS wants to commit to something like that a month after ASEAN tapes. We don't even know if ASEAN coverage will be pushed into December effectively making a Sasuke 30 during that time moot. The other thought was to have one in September again to add more to the team given how badly they botched Sasuke 29's 2nd stage causing a firestorm in Japan calling for Inui's head. Given the budget constraints though I'm thinking ASEAN is it for this year and then maybe a March Sasuke 30... if ever. I wouldn't be surprised if Sasuke 30's fate won't be decided until after ASEAN airs.

Honestly? ASEAN will probably tank. No one in Japan will care about a tournament where there are even less people they know and are invested in. Best case scenario is a New Year's show where they won't care as much about ratings.

I expect ASEAN to tank in Japan as well. However it's the money investment that I'm concerned with which is why I said I didn't think they will do ASEAN and Sasuke 30 back to back so quickly. As for format I'm told it's just Midoriyama in a stadium with a 4 stage course. TBS is supposedly building the course there. We'll see as we get closer and budgets get tight.

I can't see the ASEAN cup bringing in big ratings, either. It will no doubt be a fantastic tournament for hardcore fans who crave high-level competition, but it doesn't have the Star Power that's given Sasuke the ratings in the past.
I was actually expecting lower ratings for 29 based on its similarity to Sasuke 25 which was nearly devoid of celebrities and instead devoted to representing all the prefectures of Japan.
I'm not sure why Inui and the production crew can't round up a bunch of TBS, music, and movie stars and gain the attention of the average viewer.

The point of this particular show was to find the representatives for the ASEAN Cup so it was heavy on unknowns who they thought might have the talent the producers were looking for.
In some ways, ratings are the problem. A low rated show needs stars but stars don't want to be on a low rated show.
There are lots of reasons they can't get really famous people who would bring in casual viewers. Some of them are (yes, some of them are very similar):
1. The talent agencies won't send them. Comedians are often sent as a "package deal" by their agencies. Note that the mega talent agency, Johnny's (home to SMAP and whatnot) generally don't have people on SASUKE.
2. The show is not a must-see so people probably turn it down. When it was a big hit? Sure. Now? There are other, better offers to take. Variety sports shows like Run for Money are less physically taxing with a bigger pay-off.
3. Generally speaking, movie stars and TV stars are one in the same in Japan except for those few stars who are beyond that (usually those with several international acting credits). Ken Watanabe doesn't just appear on regular TV any old time. To keep that aura, the show has to be an event.
4. Even for regular variety shows, you have to pack it with celebrities just to stay afloat. You'd be doing it at the cost of the regular joe, which is one of the key ideas behind SASUKE.
There are several ways they could draw viewers and they are ways that would probably turn off regular viewers.
1. Give the show permanent hosts. Much like how DOORS was centered around comedy duo Ninety-nine, "giving" SASUKE to a proven commodity to slap their name on it might be a draw. That would increase off-course time and more talky-talky, less Spider-walky.
2. Get rid of average joe competitors. Celebrities only. Bye-bye Nagano, Yuuji, Kongu.
3. Re-do the entire concept. 100% new. Absolutely no repeat obstacles. New logo. The works. (I've been advocating this for at least three years).
Thing I don't think will work:
1. Chopping it up ala ANW. In what way will a low rated special become a high rated regular show? It would probably air on weekends or late night and get ratings of 2s and 3s or may not even air outside of the Tokyo area.

I agree with you 100% on this one. What 28 & 29 should have been.

IMO Sasuke's days are numbered. I wouldn't be surprised if they do 1 more and call it a day. Do Sasuke 30 and then live off the spin offs. Since the ratings aren't there and it's obvious their budgets won't allow for the celebs they need to hold the show together for the ratings I only foresee that outcome. NBC not playing nice with them lately doesn't help since that's their biggest cash cow that TBS no longer has the same access to. I agree with most of Ube's list that needs to happen. I still think they can have the "star" joes but at a lesser capacity. Still though, without access to the people they need for ratings it's pretty much trying to stop the bleeding. 16 years is a long time in television. I honestly think they might pull the plug this time.

I don't know jack about the TV industry and I know even less about the Japanese TV industry, but could TBS have at least sent several of their news anchors and variety show hosts to have competed? I don't know if there are any TBS personalities who are contractually bound to TBS rather than an outside talent agency?
