So.. another hurricane on the East coast.. for those who remember last year sasukemaniac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=3761 I'm more concerned with the friggin' water.. I could care less about the winds though we are expecting some going inland into New Jersey where I live. I hope we don't lose power for days on end like some of our fellow SMF'ers had to deal with last year. Hang in there guys!

Yea, that was a lot of fun last year.
Oh wait, no it wasn't.
I can only imagine how many trees are going to fall over this time. (Happened a lot last time)

Not to mention the fact it's set to collide with a Nor'easter as well...

Not to mention the fact it's set to collide with a Nor'easter as well... Yeah.. some of you guys might be getting a foot of snow out of this Again with the winds at 70 mph (just under hurricane) I'm sure people will be bitching "zomg it's not a hurricane" and do the same stupid mistakes they did for Irene..

Hopefully, the power outages won't be too bad around me. But with so many leaves still on the trees and the amount of rain and wind they're calling for, I'm expecting a good bit.

I'm much more concerned about the rain and potential flooding than the wind and surge, especially when considering that I live near Allentown (which is pretty far inland). I don't remember Irene being too bad, but with hurricanes (Sandy's been upgraded back to a Category 1 hurricane) you never know. Larger, slow-moving storms are the most dangerous ones in most cases when it comes to heavy rain and possible flooding (I don't recall how fast Irene was moving once it got up here, but I do believe its size was on the larger side). Still, I'm not too concerned, but that doesn't mean anybody up here is keeping their guard down; for example, when I went to a store today, a lot of people seemed to be preparing for the worst by stocking up on supplies. My family isn't really taking precautions though since we don't live that close to any bodies of water, plus there's not much we even can do other than just ride the storm out and hope for the best. *crosses fingers that giant tree next to house doesn't fall over* On the plus side, my classes at college might get cancelled.

Live near a creek thats prone to flooding? Check. Live at the bottom of a hill? Check. House prone to power outages? Check Giant American Elm that is known for having branches fall? Check Tree leaning over both the street, phone lines, power lines, and house? Check. Driveway prone to flooding due to no way for water to escape, thus allowing it to pool? Check. Basement that's been flood proofed and still floods? Check. A sumppump that is god awful and won't work if the power is shut off, and barely works anyway? Check. Secretly hoping the Hurricane is a squirrel in a space suit? Check. Secretly hoping said squirrel knows karate? Check. Who's ready for this hurricane and doing some ka-rat-a?

We'll see what happens as it's going to be near my side rather than further north. I hope the high tide doesn't cause more issues. If we have a repeat of Irene (the water being stuck inland for over a week) then it's going to be slow moving. If you need to get out for a day and go somewhere higher just do it and don't complain about it. I hate hearing about deaths that were 100% preventable.

My college has cancelled all Monday classes, which it virtually never does unless there's a serious weather threat. Yay?

Yay.. on track to go over my apartment.. yay.. we are set though and ready for when the power goes out.. See you all on the other side. If you flood normally (we don't) just heed the warnings and move elsewhere. The water is what I'm more concerned. Just like with Irene only difference is the wind will be a factor as it hooks back into land. Irene went along the coast the last time.

The size of the storm is just... insane. This is the chart of the surface wind speeds of Sandy. To put this in perspective, here is the surface wind speed chart of Hurricane Irene before it hit last year.

The size of the storm is just... insane. This is the chart of the surface wind speeds of Sandy. To put this in perspective, here is the surface wind speed chart of Hurricane Irene before it hit last year. According to many sources, Sandy is the biggest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded in terms of size (though not the worldwide record--- Typhoon Tip holds that record, as well as the one for the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded on Earth). That being said, Sandy's approach is far from a pleasant thought...

All wind now. I don't see rain. My phone keeps ringing with "hey are you okay?" and status report with my family in Philly. Seems the winds are rocking over there too scaring everyone who lives near huge trees..

Am I the only one not scared of the storm itself and just worried about power?

Am I the only one not scared of the storm itself and just worried about power? Nope you are not the only one. I'm more concerned how long we will be out because when we do.. it's going to take a while with the amount of people hit. That's my issue as well. Water rising though higher than Irene is going to be a problem. This sucker just came onshore.. we still are getting.. oh oh.. hang on power flickering something wicked right now..

OK I'll admit it... I laughed like hell when I saw this XD On a serious note though, at least judging by what I can see from my windows... didn't seem to hit that bad... there was more damage from that storm earlier this year that came out of nowhere... although that's a good thing...
