A lot of users on here consider 29 to be one of the worst if not the worst tournament. I personally think it's okay nothing too amazing. I don't really think it had the potential to be one of the great tournaments given it's placement and setup from 28.
So how would you improve the tournament?
Some ways I think it could have been better.
Course.
Stage 1 - Have the rolling escargot remain or replace it with the shin sasuke log grip with the handholds that was actually difficult or even just a new second obstacle altogether.
Keep the Jump hang kai like it was in 28.
Raise the first wall of the double wall to how it was in 39.
Maybe introduce the lumberjack climb earlier.
Competitors and results. - I haven't watched the original broadcast of 29, I did watch Challenge's version of it and the editing of stage 1 seemed off with it all being mushed into an episode (22 mins) and a half. A lot of competitors who cleared like Okuyama where basically cut with their only existence being on the results board. I'm going to presume this was also a symptom on the original broadcast too.
I would focus on Okuyama becoming the second oldest competitor to clear as well as on Kong and other returning competitors like Nagasaki.
Try to get Harashima and Mr Octupus back (ideally retiring them in 30).
The Black tigers perform better perhaps with one clearing.
Results wise I wouldn't really want much different however I would've liked if....
Nagano makes it up the second wall despite his hamstring injury and times out at the top of the rope ladder/lumberjack climb/ Would be a pretty memorable moment and foreshadows his retirement run in 32.
Stage 2
Have consistent jets on the backstream, there were 3 forces - 1. The first that Shingo and Hashimoto failed, apparently the strongest. 2. The "weakest" that Morimoto and Kong cleared with, I'd guess it's force is similar to the modern backstream and 3. The one after Kong's run which was inbetween,
I'd go with the weakest force due to it already being pretty powerful and the backstream being new to so many competitors.
I'd have the time limit be 100 seconds, you could really tell if a competitor was going to fail based on their time on the unstable bridge, a 100 second fail would provide more tension as a lot of the competitors who failed the backstream failed at the end of it, so them having 10 more seconds would create great tension on whether they could beat the walls on time. Shunsuke would also clear making has return even better.
I'd also would like if they did something to make the second wall harder, maybe having the 2 walls be 25kg instead of 20.
Results
Morimoto beats the wall normally. I don't see the issue with how he cleared and I don't see it as a dirty move. It's an asset of his smaller physique and the judges allowed it, a lot of competitors have gotten under the third wall in a similar way the only difference is they push it marginally a few cm up.. But to avoid this controversy, he narrowly lifts the wall a little and clears.
Nagasaki and Lee clear.
Stage 3
Not much I'd really change. It depends on your opinion on the time limit and unlimited rest time. I think it's an interesting change in the formula and without it Morimoto would have likely failed the crazy, ending the tournament there which would be lame imo.
