Which tournaments do you think stood out as being anomalously good or bad relative to the surrounding tournaments and the eras in which they were defined as being in?
Here are mine.
Bad tournaments in good eras
Sasuke 9 - Incredibly bland tournament with very forgettable results bar Akiyama's 1.1 fail and Nagano's breakout, and even the latter is arguably overshadowed by his 3 Final attempts shortly after. 8 was historic, while 10 had a lot more shock fails + unexpected breakouts/redemption runs, and Yamada's last stand.
Sasuke 13 - Very regressive in terms of results, with most competitors weirdly doing worse than in 11-12. Really seemed like the odd third cousin in the Nagano Final Stage trilogy. 12 had much better results, while 14 was much more memorable for its renewal.
Sasuke 20 - Had similar results to 19 without any of the shock factor so just came across as underwhelming, with most competitors failing at the same spot on Stage 1, if not going slightly farther. Okuyama's breakout was soured by the malfunction, while Nagano's Stage 2 run was probably one of the most forgettable in his career. 19 had the shock factor while 21 actually saw progression in results.
Sasuke 26 - first tournament I watched live, editing was shocking compared to 25, and most of the results were spoiled by G4. Course was pretty good, but I don't think that made up for my feeling of "wtf am I watching?". 25 was much better edited, while 27, though I'm not a big fan of the similar editing style and nerfed course, was obviously much more memorable due to the better results and Yuuji's second win.
Good tournaments in bad eras
Sasuke 30-31 - grouping these together as both were pretty good tournaments bookended by some infamously terrible ones (28-29 and 32-34, though I don't dislike 32 as much as some others). Some decent progression in results, Ryo and Tomo's Final Stage appearances, Yusuke's Kanzen, 31's great mini-renewal, Anastase's breakout, and so forth. Far fewer controversies than any of the surrounding tournaments too, the Swap SL malfunction sucked, sure, but doesn't compare to retiring the All-Stars, changing the Backstream jets, the borderline impossible Stage 3, and the Flying Bar malfunctions which ended 33.
Sasuke 40 - Breath of fresh air after 38 and 39; so many historic and unexpected moments which we'd rarely had in the past few years, like Kane and Shingo's runs, and the Final Stage.
