I absolutely adore the look on Kane's face! "Alright, you got this, don't choke. Wow he's going really fast. Uh oh the log's are spinning. NO I SAID DON'T CHOKE, DON'T CHOKE... he choked. "

Honestly this is a bromance I never thought in a million years would happen. Kane Kosugi and Ryo Matachi. Partially of course because of Kane’s sheer existence on the show, but also because it’s so left field that it was Ryo of all competitors. I don’t know who else I’d choose or why I find the fact that it’s Ryo particularly funny, but yeah…..
As much as I don’t like to laugh at serious competitors’ fails, I do kind of chuckle everytime Ryo puts his hand up and tries to smile off what happened in sheer awkwardness, and then tried to keep a straight face with Kane despite what just happened. I think Kane didn’t even know how to react lol. I mean what do you even say to someone who screws up that badly? Maybe Shinya Kishimoto should’ve been there to offer advice.

To be fair Ryo's been completing the Quad Steps into Rolling Hill fast like that for a while now hasn't he? I can't be sure he'll do it the same way again in the next tournament, but I can still see him doing it again and clearing it next time. He seems to like running with all his power and speed no holds barred, sometimes to his detriment. Wouldn't hurt to be a little more careful. I want him to fulfill his Stage 3 potential.

Yeah he does but he went too fast this time (trust me, I checked his other runs lol), whether by accident or on purpose I have no idea. He had too much speed to the point that he couldn't control his direction, so even though he was trying to land in the middle of the Rolling Hill from the last Quad Step on the left, he ended up still landing way too far left with his right foot. As a result there was no room for his left foot so it tripped behind his right. He put his hands on the rollers to try and stabilise himself which caused them to roll and then the rest was history. Again, I can't tell if he was going especially fast intentionally due to the fact he nearly timed out last time round, or if he was trying to correct an error by muscling his way through the obstacle. I'd imagine maybe the latter as he kind of looked off balance after the second step, to the point that I actually predicted that outcome a few seconds before it happened. It's quite weird though, you'd think that such a move is suited to the taller competitors with wider leg reach, but loads of the shorter guys like Araki and Keitaro do the same approach of just running into the Quad Steps, and Araki actually nearly failed the Rolling Hill in 40 for that reason. I presume it's a high risk high reward strategy, but obviously in Ryo's case the risk emerged victorious..... As funny as his "no idea how to act" post-fail reaction was, it was easily the biggest waste of potential in the entire tournament. If Isa or Suzuki had failed in that way, it would be shocking sure, but they're solid B-tier competitors so not much tangible impact of them failing early. I mean Mori failed the Quad Steps in 34 and no one cared anywhere near as much. Ryo was a pretty strong shoe-in for a Final Stage run, and potentially even Kanzen if he applies himself, and he just does.... well, that. When someone of that caliber fails as early as he did, it's not just shocking, it's also frustrating. On another note I just kind of feel bad for the guy. He's had a f***ing terrible year with his mum passing away, and has only recently started to get his mojo back in terms of the Sasuke spirit (beforehand he was a bit of a cold strop lol), so I feel like he in particular needed a good performance this time round. He even said in his post-broadcast Instagram post that he was depressed for a full month because of what happened. Don't get me wrong, I still laugh at the fail whenever I watch it and it was just a dumbfuck move on the whole, but it's a really sucky situation.

Not a good year for him. Hopefuly he can put in a great run next year, because even with over 20 clears, I could easily still see minimal changes given Inui's tactics. Imagine how legendary if he had saved it like how Obata did in 32 and then made it to the Final Stage, would've made 40 even more awesome. (Also what is it with the most hated competitors making awesome Rolling Hill saves? So odd)

(Also what is it with the most hated competitors making awesome Rolling Hill saves? Not ideal whatsoever, but certainly possible. But yeah honestly unless they massively buff the Tackle or add a borderline unfair raw strength obstacle, it's completely mental with Ryo. The fact he beat a Tackle and two SOAKED Warped Walls in 39 shows that he's incredibly physically capable, he just has this weird tendency to panic/choke, and needlessly and recklessly rush into obstacles which frequently come back to bite him in the a**. Literally 3 of his last 4 fails (37, 38, and 40) could be attributed to something like this. The guy's been training for 15 years, if his head's in it then even a modification here and there can't stop him, and he's still got a good shot at making it to the Final. I think he's still somewhat plagued by his past failures.

I'm not sure if they were ever proven for certain, but given he was dropped from the Black Tigers and the show it seems like it's probably more than just a rumor. And yes, Ryo's mum sadly died earlier this year. I don't remember the cause, but she looked young, it's just a really tragic situation. sasukemaniac.proboards.com/thread/8821/ryo-mum?page=1

Obata was banned for sexual harassment claims against him after Sasuke 35; allegedly I think he was WhatsApping a woman some inappropriate remarks or something (whenever I search him up on Google the top results show screenshots of text messages in Japanese). Clearly it was something serious given that Yamada recast the Black Tigers entirely (hence why Hiroshige also hasn't competed since 35).
And yeah Ryo's mum passed away in May last year, I'm not sure of what illness but apparently she had been sick for a while. Most likely cancer, given that she was only like 55. Really really sad, I'm sure he must've thought at least once to perform well in 40 to make his mum who supported him throughout his career proud, which makes it doubly depressing what happened. I also don't know how present his dad is in his life but he's never mentioned him, so there's a good chance he could've lost the only family he had.
I'm also fairly sure Ryo and his girlfriend split at some point in the last 2-3 years. Can't confirm this, but he was definitely dating someone for a while (was in his Sasuke 36 Stage 3 fluff piece and also in videos from Yuuji's weding), and she seems to have now vanished from history, so I presume they're broken up. Obviously not a patch on losing his mother but he's really not had a great few years in his personal life it seems.

I forgot it was 2023 now, my track of time isn't the best and it takes me a while to adjust when the year changes. Also, I sure hope Hiroshige didn't leave purely because of him, because I'd be so heartbroken to go out on a low note because my teammate turned out to be an a*****e.

He still hangs out with and trains with the Black Tigers, wears the t shirts, and I think still considers himself a member (check his Instagram for instance, it’s hiros.hige). But whenever Yamada does those trials to select who out of his group competes, Hiroshige isn’t even in the running for some odd reason. No idea why. It’s odd as he’s got the experience and even narrowly missed a Stage 3 run, which none of the other members bar Yoshiyuki have. It just seems weird that you’d sideline a pretty capable potential Number 2 to Yoshiyuki who’s already committed to your cause, idk. It would absolutely suck if it was true that he no longer competes simply due to being collateral damage from Obata’s wrongdoings, but he did also fail the Rolling Hill in his last outing so there’s that to consider to. That said, Isa’s first run was laughably joke competitor level poor, and he still got another shot.

I've said before and I'll say it again. Ryo's technique of going as fast as he can to have time for the Tackle has always been a very risky strategy. In the case of this tournament it just bit him in the a**.

Damn, i feel so sorry for Ryo, he should take a break from SASUKE to clear his mind Some people deal with trauma in different ways. Clearly for him, SASUKE has helped as he still trained and engaged with the community even in the weeks after he lost his mum. It's not a day-to-day career for him, he's not contractually obliged to compete in every tournament and I'm sure if his head wasn't in it then he would take a break to deal with the whole thing in his own way. Besides, the best thing for most people is to be around friends and family to support them rather than being alone with their thoughts, and most of his friendships are through the Sasuke community and through training. So I'd definitely say it probably helped him.
