As you all know, Yamada has threatned or tried to retire from Sasuke many times. So here are all the so-called retirements:
Sasuke 8- After failing the Warped Wall, Yamada vowed to retire, but came back for Sasuke 9. Sasuke 12- After the gloves fiasco, he skipped Sasuke 13, but competed in the Sasuke 13 trials. He came back for Sasuke 14, and it all went downhill from there. Sasuke 17- I don't know much about this one, but it explains why he wore #100 in that tournament. Sasuke 24- Similar to Sasuke 8 and Sasuke 17, he timed up on the Warped Wall, and skipped Sasuke 25, but returned for Sasuke 26. Sasuke 28- The first retirement, not by his will, but by the producers. Yamada was supposed to retire along with the other All-Stars. He skipped Sasuke 29 and trained the Black Tiger's instead. Sasuke 30- Got banned after arguing with Inui Masato, which got his run cut. Sasuke 33- Came back one last time due to the 20th anniversary.
In my opinion, returning after Sasuke 12 was his biggest mistake. Not only that, when I heard Yamada was competing in Sasuke 30, I knew it wasn't going to end well, since Sasuke 28 was supposed to be his official run and I wasn't surprised he was banned afterwards. Let me know what you guys think

On SASUKE 8, it is clear what caused it.
On SASUKE 12, it was never stated he was retiring. He just simply took off his time to fix things up with his family *and maybe to forgot the incident with the gloves*. This is why Yamada didn't miss the Trials. Later, when interviewed shortly after SASUKE 13 aired in Japan, he feel ashamed to skip the tournament because he was in Trials' Top 15 position, hence, closing chances for other competitors entry. He said that he throw away things that he fight for.
On SASUKE 17, he thought it was embarrassing for someone who hold the title of Mr. SASUKE to fail First Stage three times in a row *it never happened in his career before*, so he told the producers he wanted to retired after the tournament, which is of course not true.
On SASUKE 24, this is probably the only time he kept his promise. However, before SASUKE 26, with Monster9 on the brink of being bankrupt, three other active members of SASUKE All-Stars miss the tournament *Akiyama probably retiring himself, Shiratori is still dealing with his injuries, and, for some reason, Takeda miss the tournament. I read that around 2010-2012 he was promoted in his Firefighter Department, so, having a major injury like what happened in 2003 won't help his career (but, again, I only read, so maybe that was wrong information)*, left them with only two active members to compete. Monster9 feels having only two members competing was wrong, hence, Yamada was called again by the producers, which he accept *big mistake*, and, he return to Start line once more.
On SASUKE 30 and 33, it was not retirement, actually. He already stated after SASUKE 28 that he will compete again if he feels ready. The first one was of course the 30th tournament. Though it ended badly, in 20th Anniversary *SASUKE 33*, Yamada was once again allowed to compete. He could again compete in SASUKE 34 seeing that it is still 20th Anniversary tournament, but he reject it because he didn't feel ready. Now, on what supposed to be Olympics year, he was ready once more.

I think he had a reasonable chance of clearing Stage 1 again from SASUKE 14-18, because there were a lot of close calls like Rope Climb fails etc, especially 18 where he seemed to have no trouble with any obstacle, he just went too slowly.
I think from 19 onwards is where we saw him really go downhill; that was where the stereotypical Yamada performances came into play, where he was either far too slow or he tried to go fast but his technique was poor which led to him constantly failing the Jumping Spider or Warped Wall etc. In fact, from most of his attempts you could see very early on that he was going far too slowly to finish regardless. Only in SASUKE 24 did he seem like he actually had a chance of clearing, and even then he failed the Warped Wall surprise surprise.
I definitely think he should've probably considered retiring sort of mid-Shin-SASUKE time; we've seen people who've avenged 4-5 straight Stage 1 failures before (like Ryo, Akiyama etc.) but when it got to 9-10 in Yamada's case I think everyone began to doubt his sanity.....

He just didn't know when to stop. His training methods were not very effective, too. If I remember correctly, it was only in Sasuke 27 that he increased the height of his warped wall at home but he still instinctively kept grabbing the lower bar and, unsurprisingly, he failed the obstacle at Sasuke 27.

Honestly, I'm gonna get extremely p**sed if Yamada ever competes again, especially in the next tournament because it feels to me like he is competing forever and that he should've quit a long time ago.
He is my least favourite All-Star because of the downward spiral which affected him after 12 and still seventeen years later now in the present, he still continues to have a dedication with this show, even though the last time he cleared Stage 1 was a long time ago.
Also, I can't believe that he preferred SASUKE over his family which he should've at least shown some love and respect to.

I honestly just hope he doesn't translate his past behaviour to his Black Tigers, like being as hard on them as he was on himself. I wonder what convinces someone to join the Black Tigers as opposed to just competing of their own accord.
More specifically, why choose Yamada as your mentor given his poor track record.
And yes I don't really know what got in Yamada's head. As much as we love Sasuke, it's fundamentally a game show, albeit one that has sparked a huge culture, but a game show nonetheless. Most competitors these days say that their family is their inspiration, but he just alienated his for, I repeat again, A GAME SHOW.
