So, I was bored and decided to create a list of those most likely to achieve Kanzenseiha in Sasuke 38. Essentialy, a "Power Rankings" list of present-day competitors. This is my personal opinion and I would love to hear yours.
#1 - Morimoto Yusuke - He has made the finals 3 of the last 6 comps, but is coming off of a disappointing 1st stage defeat. Still, an easy choice for #1.
#2 - Urushihara Yuuji - He struggled for a stretch, but has made the third stage in two straight competitions. However, at 41 years of age, does he have a Kanzenseiha left in him? I think so, but his time is quickly running out.
#3 - Sato Jun - Six straight Stage 3 runs, but it always comes down to the same thing, can he ever beat the Cliffhanger? He clearly needs to specialize his training. He is a first stage master and has been running hot, but it will not matter if he cannot overcome his nemesis.
#4 - Tada Tatsuya - What an improvement this guy has made recently. After making the finals, will he improve once more and achieve Kanzenseiha? Unlike Sato, he seems to have no problems with the Cliffhanger, however, can his recent success be sustained?
#5 - Rene Kaselowsky - Ok, so that was an incredibly impressive run for his first time on the course! However, will he even be invited back? I certainly hope so. He clearly has a lot of potential. Foreign competitiors only get so many chances at this, but surely he impressed enough to get a second shot.
#6 - Kawaguchi Tomohiro - An incredible talent that had so much potential. However, as he gets older and older it seems the Cliffhanger-Vertical Limit combo is just going to be too much for him to overcome.
#7 - Nagasaki Shunsuke - He has been around forever and is still only 33 years old. He would be higher on the list if not for his recent string of failures. I hope he can bounce back because he sure is fun to watch!
#8 - Drew Dreschel - He did not compete in Sasuke 37. Has his Sauke opportunity ran its course? He is clearly a beast and may not be invited to Sasuke 38. However, he is still only 31, so I expect him to make it back at some point.
#9 - Matachi Ryo - So many first stage disappointments. It is hard to believe he has made the final stage twice. However, he has never failed the Cliffhanger and still only 31 years of age. Plenty of time to turn it around.
#10 - Hioki Masashi - I love the guy. He has made the third stage in 6 of his last 8 contests including 4 straight trips to stage 3. However, he is 39 and lest just face it, he is not beating the Cliffhanger.
#11 - Kanno Hitoshi - He should probably be a little higher on the list, but he certainly isn't getting any younger and has been such a disappointment lately. He just seems like he has lost it. We have saw it time and time again around his age of 35. He seems to be on the decline with a road that only gets more rocky from here.
#12 - Yamamoto Yoshiyuki - Finally, a Black Tiger with an excellent first appearance. Who knows if he can be consistent, but that was certainly a good start.
#13 - Isa Yoshinori - After a "standard" Black Tiger embarassment with his first run, he bounced back and looked pretty good. Maybe things are looking up for the "Yamada Boys!"
#14 - Jessie Graff - She should be invited to every competition until she retires. Will she ever beat the third stage? Probably not. However, she is one of the most impressive first and second stage competitors in all of Sasuke, regardless of gender. Girl got skills!
What do you think? It is possible I forgot/overlooked someone with potential. Just let me know. Also, what would your list look like?
