I noticed on the wikipedia page sasuke 16 suffered a massive drop in ratings compared to 15, down by 5 percent. Why did this tournament have such bad ratings? It had some great moment like Bunpei Shiratori running despite heat stroke.Akiyama making it to the second stage,Yamada nearly making it to the second stage.16 people clearing the most since Sasuke 4, there was also a fair share of shocking moments like Shingo failing on the Jump hang. The new obstacles introduced besides delta bridge were really fun e.g reverse chute. So why did the tournament do so badly?

I believe Bunpei Shiratori had a heat stroke in 15 not 16. The New Obstacles were eh.

Well it’s more how Sasuke 15 went that would affect 16’s ratings, right? I mean some people could’ve been turned off by the commercial for 16, but I’d assume how the previous tournament goes would decide how many time-in for the next one.
Although I really loved Sasuke 15 so I’d have no idea why the ratings drop would be!

It's odd that this topic is brought up because 16 was the first tournament I saw under the Ninja Warrior name. It's hard to put it into words but I think other than the interesting one off obstacles, the tournament was more or less... unmemorable. I mean I can remember 4 specific things about 16. 1. Tomoyuki cleared 2. The guy that rides in on a bike was the first competitor I ever saw. 3. Shingo massively failed the Jump Hang. 4. With how the editing came out from NW it painted Takeda in a negative light. He said in NW he's running this course for Yamamoto but in NW's case Yamada ran just before him and he just BARELY timed out. I thought he was a bit biased towards Yamamoto until I found out in SASUKE Yamada was AFTER him so... Also love the irony I thought he was biased towards Shingo... I am too.

Ratings are never determined by what exactly is IN the show.. it is determined by how many turned on the television at the time. Many contributing factors are time of year, what shows were on at the time against it (competition), genre fatigue and other factors like major celebs leaving (we know Kane leaving had a huge impact). You'd have to study what happened that night vs. everything else to determine why people didn't turn on Sasuke vs. other shows.

^Pretty much, you'd have to see what else aired that night, and also on top of that how much they advertised beforehand, how well documented was the promotion of it?

Oh right I thought ratings determined how good the Tournament was.I did't know it was how many was watching it.So does that mean the highest rated tournament Sasuke 7 had 26 percent of Japan watching?

That's correct. That's for any show as well. It's a measure of many people watched the show that night based on the total amount of people who turned on the TV. So the pool is always different (like a slow night vs. a heavy TV viewing night) and the percentage of that base vs. all the other shows. Lord knows we see stupid shows (Kardashians anyone...) get high ratings because a lot of people like watching schadenfreude.. Hell.. look at USA television.. it's definitely not a measure of how good a show is if something like Bachelorette is a ratings hit.. /shudder That show constantly beats ANW in ratings. Japan is no different except that the pool is much smaller (they have less channels and less population). It's still a percentage though. Compared to how things were and how they are now.. Sasuke 7 having that many people watching is crazy high. Then again that was during the height of Kane Kosugi popularity on Sasuke. You can see the steady decline after he left. Some years also they had fatigue where they had 3 Sasuke tourneys, Kunoichi and a bunch of other specials basically saturating the market at the time. Also I think this was the one that ran against the Olympics or something like that? Trying to remember the situation but yeah.. it's a measure of how many people watched Sasuke rather than the quality of the episode.

I never thought kosugi would be that popular. He and his father stared in a couple Japanese films but I don't think they were that popular atleast to my knowledge.Do you think Kosugi returning to Sssuke now would revive ratings a bit?

We are talking about 15 years later.. he won't come back. Besides.. most people think the show was cancelled and have moved on to other things. It's quite evident from the ratings.

They couldn't get him back for SASUKE 30 (I'm pretty sure they tried), so I don't know why it would be different now. M9 annoyed him big time.
