Okay. I've been a fan of Sasuke for about 8 years now, and been on SMF for almost 3 years, so I'm embarrassed to ask this. I have a basic gist of it, but how do they determine start positions, and how do competitors reserve numbers? Presumably, since some people end up getting the same numbers. If so, how do they determine who gets to choose/reserve a number, and who picks theirs randomly?

The producers choose. Hence why Nagano kept getting #100 despite being on the record as hating running as #100. The lone exceptions are SASUKE 18 (competitors got to choose in order of their finish in a 1200 meter race) and SASUKE 25 (#1-97 were random draw). Competitors find out what number they'll be running as when they sign in the morning of the competition.

To piggyback of the previous post, Hioki lately tends to be in the first half of competitors because of his consistent status of being among the first few to clear (if not the first).
30: 3rd to clear (#35) 31: 1st to clear (#31) 32: Had #31 but didn't clear 33: 1st to clear (#45) 34: 4th to clear (#45)
You may have also noticed they lately group most of the handful of women they have each tournament together, that's so they aren't wasting time/effort constantly adjusting the course between men and women. That's how we knew Jessie was trying the 'default' version based off where she ended up.

Nagano picked a low number and the Producers forced him to grab a number in the 90's.. in fact they stopped people from taking the last of the 90's.

The funny thing is, Takeda has never received either #99 or #100, and he's probably the most consistent competitor of all time (reaching the third stage 7 consecutive times in a row, having a first stage clear rate of 19 times out of the 27 competitions he's competed, reaching the third stage 13 times, etc). I know he's never beaten the third stage, but I feel as if Takeda had the best shot of clearing that final stage that he's never even attempted, considering that he climbs everyday because he's a firefighter. And that's what being 100 (or at least 99) was about—being the one(s) that had the best chance of clearing the entire course. Sure he was 98 about 5 times, but I still feel that they aren't giving him enough credit due to some of the great consistent accomplishments he has achieved.

Okay. I figured it was something along those lines, though I'm surprised that the producers pick some of the numbers! Thanks!
