Since sasuke 33 is around the corner I think it's appropriate that I ask what's your favorite sasuke tournament. My favorite is 27.

23. EASILY 23. It reminded me of so much. It had the perfect mix of success from the Shin Sedai and All stars alike. It got me to like Yuuji and Kanno more and who could forget Shingo's MIRACULOUS comeback to stage 3. Dang shoulder didn't intervene who KNOWS where he would have ended up. Also Nagano's controversial fail on the Slider Jump was... unforgettable but also somewhat funny... XD

My second favorite would be 23 because for the first time in years takeda, shingo, and Nagano made it to the third stage. Also Nagano made it to the final stage for the fifth time. And to top it all off, Kanno made it to the final stage as well. But when Takeda failed the spider flip, it was sad but not as sad as when he failed it in 24.

SASUKE 17 is my favorite tournament. The broadcast starts by telling the audience that for the first time in seven years (and only the second time ever) that the course has been beaten, which IMO is a great means of suspense and essentially forced viewers to watch until the end to find out who won. The introduction of the Circle Slider also made things interesting and a bit unexpected; for example, Akiyama's fail there implied early on in the broadcast that a new champion had been crowned. SASUKE 17 was the last time that all 6 All-Stars competed, with 4 of them clearing Stage 1 and Stage 2 (the only time since then with 3+ All-Stars in Stage 3 was SASUKE 23, which coincidentally is my second-favorite tournament). The results in general for Stage 1 were quite average for the time with 11 clears, and had a good mix of veterans and newcomers doing well. Yamada's "last" run (or so he falsely promised) ended disappointingly, yet fitting in the sense that it wasn't shocking. Stage 3 saw some shocking fails (Shiratori and Yamamoto) as well as some very emotional ones (Takeda and Nakata), but also saw two clears---the first ones since SASUKE 13. Although Nagasaki came up short in his first Final Stage attempt at the young age of 19, Nagano's record fourth attempt at the Final Stage ended in victory at long last and was probably one of the happiest and most emotional moments in the show's history. The broadcast ended with a preview of the forthcoming renewal of SASUKE and the implied difficulty in what would be called "Shin-SASUKE".
Tl;dr---17 was the best tourney IMO not only because of the results, history, and numerous emotional moments surrounding it, but also due to how TBS originally presented the broadcast on TV. 23 is my second favorite, followed by 8 (I also happen to have a rough list of the tournaments by personal assessment from "best" to "worst" on my laptop).

Huh interesting question, it's harder than I thought to answer because most of them having at least one redeeming thing about them. Probably one with a winner like 17. That's it I guess because Nagano's my favorite and he won! So they said that there'd be a winner? Well I guess that's one good thing (for me) about my being too lazy to learn Japanese

I have to say 18.
The way it revolutionized the first stage, the fact that it was Sasuke's biggest ever renewal by an absolute mile (at least 20 new obstacles), the creepy (red?) lighting for stage 3 and the creepy new stage 3 obstacles, the amazing suspense of nobody knowing what the final stage was, watching 3 top competitors squirm on the Shin-Cliffhanger, INVENTING THE SALMON LADDER, learning from Arsenette how Nagano tanked the race and got a number in the 50's so producers tracked him down and forced him to get 97, YAMADA DOING EXCEPTIONALLY WELL, Ayako Miyake competing.
The only bad points about the tournament were the rushed course fillers (bungee bridge, cargo net bridge, the weird climbing bar ladder in stage 3). AND OH GOD I CRINGE EVERY TIME I WATCH THE SHOULDER WALK FROM STAGE 2, IF YOU FALL FROM THAT YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANGE OF GETTING HIT BY ONE OF THOSE 20KG HANGING YOLK BALLS AND BREAKING YOUR NECK, I ASSURE YOU.

However, if you watch the Japanese broadcast of SASUKE 17, it's pretty clear from the clips they show that it's the message they're trying to get across.

I'd have to say 27. It had a good mix of foreign and Japanese competitors alike, many of the runs were enjoyable to watch, THE ULTIMATE CLIFFHANGER WAS FINALLY BEATEN, and to top it all off, Yuuji defied the odds and achieved his second kanzenseiha.

I love Sasuke 11 actually- it's probably my favourite tourney. Stage 1 was just so much fun to watch, the best part being Akiyama's ridiculously close (and emotional) return to glory. Definitely the most enjoyable Stage 1 for me. Stage 2 was rather forgettable, but Stage 3 was nice. Nagano's dismount off the Pipe Slider was exquisite- the commentary was brilliant too.
15, 19, 23 are some of my other favourites to watch too.

23, 24, and 27 jump out to me. If I had to pick 1, probably 24. Still crying over Takeda's "last stand", Kong's reaction to completing Stage 3, and of course Yuuji. Just a roller coaster of emotions.

I remember a bunch of us on here watching it back in 2009, and how we all were cheering like CRAZY after seeing so many people clear the first stage. Combine that with how close Nagano came to achieving a 2nd Kanzenseiha, wow just typing it makes me REALLY miss watching that tournament. I can't believe that was almost 8 years ago!!!!!

It's the reason why I downloaded the tourney so I can watch it whenever I wanted to. And that's pretty frequently. Other tourneys I like are 17, 14, 15, 25, 5, 7, 24, 29, 30, and... surprisingly 31 has warmed up to me despite Shingo and Toshihiro's huge blunder.

8 is my favorite without a winner, and 24 my favorite with a winner. I'm a big fan of tournaments with a dramatic Stage 3 and 4. Kane powering through to the final in the midst of severe weather and it being considered the weather was the only thing that prevented him from winning. The behind-the-scenes drama also helped, not just of it being his last tournament but that, in my opinion, ended an era of Sasuke and started the one that lasted from 9-17 that was dominated by the All-Stars. 24 was a marathon to get through but 5 of 7 getting through Stage 3 with every run at least having interacted with the 2nd to last obstacle in the stage is something I always cherished seeing live. In my opinion, that is the most emotional Stage 3 ever, bookended by two of the more devastating failures the show had, for completely different reasons. Stage 4 with Kouji getting as close as he did, Yuuji's win in the literal middle of the other four's failures and Kong getting objectively screwed out of a fighting chance because of cable malfunction. 23 and 17 are my respective backups. 31 deserves a shout out since that was for me the best RISING-era tournament so far.

How about this... if you could design the perfect tournament, what would it involve? I don't mean design the course itself per se, but like things that happen and storylines and returning competitors and stuff. In the context of 33, I think the "perfect" tournament would involve:
- #1 clears Stage 1 - woman clears Stage 1 - some sort of re-try by a notable competitor - #100 (whoever it would be) fails on first obstacle - epic weather for Stage 1, but clears up for 2 and beyond - really low Stage 2 clear rate - celebrity clearing Stage 2 - 2 Pipe Slider fails: Drew being one of them and the other an All Star or notable veteran (Kong, Okuyama, etc.) - near-Kanzenseiha, or a Kanzenseiha on a really super difficult Stage 4 - Levi, or some other foreign vet, returning and doing well
One can dream...

I think the "legendary" or "epic" tournaments if you will are 8, 12, 17, 23 and 31. I mean legendary in how they are remembered and have affected Sasuke history.
As far as designing a perfect tournament, I'm mainly about the drama when it comes to watching Sasuke. I honestly enjoyed Sasuke 26 more than 27 despite 27 having the far better results. 27 lacked the tension that 26 had. I love Sasuke 19 mainly because of how grim the atmosphere was (and how happy the crowd was when someone would clear- even Katsumi Yamada couldn't help but smile when Koji cleared) , in comparison to 18 which had better results but was not that dramatic. The results don't have to be bad for there to be drama though- I love Sasuke 11 mainly for the positive atmosphere in Stage 1. So yeah, drama.
