Most of us here love Japan and have always wanted to go there. We love Japan for many things including Anime, cars, television shows (especially their crazy game shows!), and their food.
But is there something about Japan you really DON'T like? Love to hear your views.

The fact there are earthquakes more often than not... I know they're prepared for them but for visitors it could be unsettling...

I'll probably have more to offer after I move there in July, but honestly anything dealing with cultural differences don't really annoy me too much.
That being said, I hear Japanese people love their meetings, and I mean LOVE them. Janitor at a school has a complaint? Gather all of the staff for a 2 hour meeting. Have a meeting planned for friday? Gather the staff for a meeting on thursday to prepare from the meeting on friday.
In terms of education (because that's what I know) teachers are expected to show up to school even when school is out. They may not have anything to do or any classes to teach, but they have to be there. Want those days off? That'll come out of your vacation days.
Another thing. Want to call in sick to work? You'd better let them know a week in advance, I.E. you need to see into the future if you want to take a sick day.
Also, all of those shops in Tokyo that won't sell to foreigners.
Ube and Jin are two members here that currently live in Japan, so I'm sure they have a lot they can add.

Also, all of those shops in Tokyo that won't sell to foreigners. But why??? Isn't that discriminating?

Their surface reasoning is most likely "We don't want to deal with people who can't speak Japanese and/or we've heard bad things about foreigners". But the real reason is probably more akin to xenophobia or racism. Anyway, it stopped me from buying this cute cat statue. I really wanted that statue... Certainly the first time I ever felt the negative affects of being a minority.

This thread has potential to go south quickly, so please try to keep it civil in here. So far so good, but let's not have that one post that gets the thread locked.

The rail system. Anyone who watched ANC 1 and 2 back in the day will know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

Hong Kong has it beat imo, but yeah Japan's rail system is great.

I guess it's the smoking. I remember a few years back I was in a restaurant in kyoto with my family and we was seated next to a bunch of smoking office workers. The food was good but the smoking absolutely killed the experience. That was probably the single worst experience I had with smokers. There were definitely other negative experiences during my travels to japan, in tokyo and fukuoka, but that kyoto incident sticks in my head
But after my time in army is over (I work in a logistics office) I think my tolerance will probably be raised, seeing as some of my best friends are smokers and they come into the office right after smoking.
