The first glimpse I had of Sasuke was visiting a friend of mine in 2007. We were planning on going out and practicing flips or parkour related stuff. They had the tv on G4. Some of his younger brothers were watching a japanese obstacle course tv show. I was instantly entranced by the show. I asked them what this was, and they explained to me that it was Ninja Warrior. We left and I didn't think anything of it till probably 6 months to a year later (I can't exactly remember).
My family didn't have any cable channels at all, so I went onto the interwebs to look up more information about it. That is when I found Arsenette's blog. For the next whatever amount of time till the Sasuke Maniac Forums were born, I spent catching up Sasuke tournaments through her blog. And that's how I ended up joining the forums and became a Sasuke fan.
Edit: Oh, and that first tournament I saw on their tv was none other than Sasuke 17.

SASUKE 14, Shinji Maggy (magician comedian) was the first SASUKE competitor I've seen, he timed out on Rolling Maruta, he was hanging on the half of the track till the end

My memory is awful, but the short version is I saw Nagano's VIKING run on ESPN2 and was amazed. This was when ESPN2 still aired random cool sports/competitions, and I specifically would watch it hoping to see unique stuff like that.
I don't remember how much longer after that it was before Ninja Warrior debuted on G4, but I started watching basically from the start and when I saw Nagano on there too I was hooked. Especially the way his journey to total victory played out over the first handful of seasons G4 aired, I was a ridiculous fanboy. I remember telling multiple people that they needed to watch, because: "Makoto Nagano is better at obstacle courses than anyone else is at anything."
I was at the height of my fandom probably when the original American Ninja Warrior competition was airing, and I watched every season of Sasuke and Kunoichi that G4 aired. But as much as anything my life started getting busier, and that's also around when it started to become harder to watch Sasuke in America. So my interest waned a bit, but when new-style ANW came around, I came back a bit. Slowly at first, partially because I wasn't a fan of the format the first few seasons (I like it more now, although I still have issues), but eventually my interest was back to the point that I was watching streams of the Japanese competition.
Watching the marathon today is really bringing me back, and I'm hopeful this is a step toward getting actual Sasuke back in America. I'll still probably prefer to watch the original broadcasts, unless they do a way better job of adapting it than G4 did, but hopefully will be a boost for Sasuke itself, to help sustain it - maybe even more tournaments again? And more opportunity to see Americans on the Japanese course, which I feel will help both competitions.
