www.websiterocket.com/american-ninja-warrior/Let me know how much this pissed you off. Edit: Looking at the arguments for both sides, I can see where some people are coming from when they say they should be compensated for the money spent on trying to compete on this show, but I still heavily disagree for many reasons.

'Let's fix a show by addressing the least important issue the show has.'
Getting however much the eventual winner will get after taxes will still be more than what Akiyama, Nagano and Yuuji x2 got combined. This isn't a true game show where return is virtually guaranteed if you're not greedy and isn't a true reality competition where you get slight compensation depending on how far you get. Now if they got nothing for the USA vs. specials, that's something different.
EDIT: Last I remembered, getting the top qualifying and city final times still got you something, they just don't promote it on-air anymore, unless that was an one-off thing.

He's just a normal guy that watches ANW and has way too many kids. We shouldn't be bothered by his opinion.

Thing is they do have some bonus prizes, fastest time in qualifying gets $2500, fastest time in city finals gets $5000, and everyone who qualifies for vegas gets their trip payed for. So they're already giving out $7500 per region and flight and hotel for at least over 80 people...

Yeah, although compensating the contestants would be a nice icing-on-the-cake for athletes that achieve success on the show, it wouldn't "fix" ANW. As discussed elsewhere here on SMF, there are about a hundred other more useful things NBC could put their resources toward that would make ANW better. That being said, I agree with Edit: Looking at the arguments for both sides, I can see where some people are coming from when they say they should be compensated for the money spent on trying to compete on this show, but I still heavily disagree for many reasons. in that competitors (not including walk-ons who don't actually walk on) should be compensated a small amount for the logistics of competing, which can run into the thousands of dollars for young people that just don't have it. Then again, NBC can always play the "if you want me to pay you, I'll find someone else" card. Regardless, the author has 6 kids. You got bigger fish to fry dude.

Having no winner and not paying out is one of the draws of Sasuke. Start giving out cash prizes and you've just destroyed one of the things that makes Sasuke unique. Why are we trying to force it to fit the mold of other reality shows? It's doing just fine, and shaking up the format too much will just turn it into some bland, 3rd rate, reality tv program.

Heh the show is changing so much away from Sasuke that honestly it doesn't even matter anymore. What I find amusing from the article is that they are implying that if no one wins the ratings will go down and people will stop watching. It's like they forgot why NBC decided to separate itself from Sasuke in the first place.. because Sasuke is considered superior by all standards and they want no competition. Why? Because it's not about the money. Never has been. ANW is still in a Identity crisis. That said, this is a common argument and has been going on for years here in the USA. It far predates ANW though, this new generation was always taught that if you try hard enough even half success equals full success and should be rewarded. The idea of not being rewarded for losing is somehow a travesty. This is a cultural problem. Not an ANW problem.

I'm really not a fan of giving money to those who run each stage the fastest as it ruins the man vs stage dynamic of the show.
With that said, I'm not opposed to contestants getting prizes for partial completion due to NBC making the contestants sign a 1 year contract that prevents them from appearing on other game shows. So instead of treating them like contestants, they treat them like independent contractors. And if they're going treat them like independent contractors, they should give them at least some form of payment.
Of course, giving partial prizes won't help the ratings. If that was true, the original Ninja Warrior wouldn't have done well enough for ANW to even exist. If they want ratings to improve, they need to improve the pacing of the show and they need to make sure they actually build the courses correctly (with good design as well).
