The first time I saw him, I wasn't too sure. I didn't immediately dislike him or anything. Just wasn't sure. Though once he beat the first stage for the first time, and he teared up. I think I began to open up toward liking him. I have a lot of respect for the way he treats Sasuke.

Well, I tell you about his personality from Japanese point of view. When Asa was televised for the first time, I too had some skepticism about his passion, dedication to Sasuke. Now no one denies his dedication to Sasuke, his love of Sasuke deeper than virtually anyone among the competitors. His outer shell is hard, hard-edged, but his inside is soft. He's from an island, way out in the country. He's just opposite to a guy like Matachi, Sasuke nerd who grew up in Kawasaki (near Tokyo). It's interesting to see that Asa and Matachi has been developing their friendship lately. He might look like a hoodlum or a street gang, but he's pretty straightforward, no-nonsense, humble guy. And he is also proud of his craft as an landscaper in his real life. He is special in my opinion. Thank you for this insight.

He's got a hot girlfriend so I'd say he's pretty cool.
But on a serious note I think he is a great competitor he usually does well and he's very loyal to sasuke, and to top it off he is very emotional wich makes us the viewer more interested in him. Overall i'd say he's a great competitior, and one day may be a grand champion.

At first, his reactions to winning or losing a stage irked me a bit. But after a while, I got used to it as it's simply his way of coping with emotion.

(Hi, all first post.)
I really like his emotion and energy, and his first stage runs are always mind blowing. He's definitely in my top 10 favorite competitors (incomplete list as of now, I just got into this show.) Somebody made a comment alluding to how it sort of seems like he's on drugs earlier in this thread, which is funny because I initially thought the same thing before realizing that he's just insanely dedicated and emotional towards Sasuke.
Interesting that somebody made a comparison between him and Kong. Kong is definitely in my top 3 favs!

I think his runs are very entertaining to watch and whenever he runs you will always see tears. He is dedicated to SASUKE and gives it his all. I really like that.

Clearly ASA is a determined fanatic and Sasuke competitor. However, I think of him as a competitor, not part of the Shin Sedai. Just my opinion.

I like Asa, he's just a little... overly emotional. The only real competitors I hate are Yukio, Koriki and Kanno. And I find Yamada distasteful at times, but I don't quite hate him, but I don't like him either. As far as Asa goes, he's not my favorite competitor, but he could be MUCH worse.

When I saw him on SASUKE 27 I found him irritating, I think we were all not used to his way of expressing passion. But after his clear and his stellar SASUKE 28 performance, I was convinced he was one of the most passionate competitors SASUKE has ever seen, with the body paint to show it. He's now one of my favourite competitors.
I remember back in SASUKE 30 rebroadcast chat I made comparisons between Asa and Dennis Rodman. Now that I think about it, there does exist a large disconnect in terms of their personalities (Dennis does trash talk and pick up technicals for being disruptive in games, while Asa doesn't ever cross that line). But I think what led me to make that comparison was the 'life and death' attitude in which they approached their sport (Dennis doing the dirty work ie rebounding, defence for his team, and Asa going all out in Stages 1 and 2 especially and claiming very high finishing times). And I can definitely say we will probably not see people as unique as them in the sense that they are so passionate for their sport and not afraid to be themselves and show it so openly.

Just out of curiosity, why do you hate Kanno? He's one of my favorite competitors and maybe aside from kissing his muscles in SASUKE 30, I don't see anything else that shows he possibly has a huge ego.

It's exactly that sort of stuff that makes me not like a competitor, that and his not gonna get a job until he wins attitude.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I really enjoy watching Asa on SASUKE. His passion, love along with his custom pants & kanji painted on his back cannot be matched by anyone. It clearly shows how much this means to him and I can completely understand where he's coming from. Chasing a dream for so long (in this case, him going through the SASUKE Trials & fails on stage 1) and finally breaking through (in SASUKE 27) while improving along the way is really beautiful to watch grow throughout the years. The emotion is very real & can be relatable for anyone chasing a life long dream. I've also messaged him and he is a really humble guy. He gave me advice for competing in SASUKE in the future and to prep for ANW 11. Personally my favorite competitor. <3
