of course he could have beaten the 2nd wall. he didn't even try. he had 50 seconds left and did everything he could to waste them away, looking at the wall, taking half-assed in-runs... The only reasons he did not manage the wall is: 1.) he didn't want to. 2.) he was ordered not to pass stage 1 by the producers , or 3.) the wall coating somehow was too slippery already for the last competitor. And don't tell he that Nagano hadn't trained as much for this one... he frikkin doesn't need much training working 25 days in a row as a fisherman with 5 days off. Please go away. Nagano himself said he was more motivated to pass stage 1 than ever before, and you could tell he was pissed he wasn't able to get up that wall. Pissed? I guess that's the reason he was smiling as he failed.

I guess that's the reason he was smiling as he failed. Also the reason he was yelling and threw his elbow pads on the ground in disgust.

The only reasons he did not manage the wall is: 1.) he didn't want to. 2.) he was ordered not to pass stage 1 by the producers , or 3.) the wall coating somehow was too slippery already for the last competitor. The only plausible one there is #3 which is entirely possible considering the whole course had to be rebuilt from scratch (M9 had to liquidate everything, and TBS didn't have the original obstacles to work with). But likely it's a mix of that and age is catching up with him, he hasn't been 100% recently, even as far back as 23 he was back to having trouble with the wall, in both of his runs he had to take two tries on it... And look at 27, he cleared just fine but he was exhausted by the time he got past the wall... He took forever before the Spin Bridge just because of how tired he had gotten at that point... Yes in his prime he was one of the greatest competitors but everyone seems to forget he's human... he still gets old and worn out like everyone else...

I highly doubt that Nagano gave up on that 2nd Warped Wall. Maybe when he had about 20 seconds left he felt that he was screwed, but before that he looked determined.

Add the fact he was doing the last ever All-Star run, and the fact that he'd seen the last 10 guys fail, and the pressure on him was immense

The fact of the matter is, he failed the second wall. It just happens, with a mix of old age and not being able to train enough for him, it'll happen. He'll train harder and come back next time and perform better.

Based on the sheer number of RE and SB fails, he did absolutely amazing.
I think a good analogy is David Campbell's run in 22. He didn't clear, but was in the top 10.
Nagano was definitely in the top 15 if not the top 10.

And of course, it will make it all the sweeter when he (and hopefully some of the other All-Stars!) nails Stage 1 in Sasuke 29

Inui isn't the one who made the decision to retire the All-Stars. TBS did that. In fact, when Takeda (via Facebook) expressed his desire to compete again next time, Inui told him "You should continue." It's been said several times--the plan to retire the All-Stars failed badly. Three of them have already stated that they want to compete in Sasuke 29, and the fans are encouraging them to do so.

"Pissed? I guess that's the reason he was smiling as he failed. "
It's because Nagano has good sportsmanship

Arsenette mentioned that in another thread. I thought it was Inui's decision, but Arsenette found out it was actually TBS' decision. They're trying to move away from the M9 image, hence the plan to retire the All-Stars.
