I noticed that the current theme that plays when someone fails and a replay is shown has been around since the first SASUKE tournament, but in the first, it seemed to be the general replay theme (regardless of success or not).
Was the 1st tournament the only one without Yagyu-Gaiden (or whatever they used) playing after stage clears?
When did we start hearing the replay theme solely for failures, and when did they start using YG after contestants cleared?

IIRC, Yagyu-Gaiden has been used every tournament (different versions but by the same band; they're both on Sheep's YouTube channel if you want to listen to them), the clear theme had to have been edited out. Although, I also recall there being music heard during the digests in Stage 1 so why edit one thing but not the other IDK (if there was music).

Actually Yagyu-Gaiden was released in 2000, so it has been used every tournament since SASUKE 5.

Lately they have been doing special fail music for one-time use (like Nagano's fail from 26 and even Takeda's from 24) but unsure when they all started. That latter Sasuke tourneys have had a huge influx of music where the previous Sasuke's have been pretty quiet.

Even more actually, The "Yagyu-Gaiden" released in 2000 (Off Musashi's Yamato album) is a remake, even if it is our most familiar version (now at least). The original was from A movie in 1998, We found this out a while back. As for Sasuke use, I haven't watched any full tbs/jet tournaments before 17 yet but I've heard that version used in videos as early as Sasuke 2

As for the 2000 version, it seems as if it's been used more and more since first being used in place of the 1998 version of Yagyu-Gaiden. I'm not sure exactly when the more recent composition of it began playing on Sasuke, but I know it's been used since at least Sasuke 13 (it probably started much earlier though).

Due to the large number of clears in the first four tournaments, Yagyu-Gaiden was not used. In fact, little to no music was used at all (competitors didn't get themes until the SASUKE 7). Yagyu-Gaiden was first used in SASUKE 5.

The replay fail and main digest themes have been around since the beginning.
At least Toyohisa Iijima (Bruce Lee guy) got a theme in Sasuke 2, just a snippet of a Chinese-inspired instrumental. Even the few second snippets of songs count.
Also, Yagyu-Gaiden was used in Sasuke 2, when they listed the competitors who were moving on to the next stages (including right after Omori cleared Stage 3, so they have used it right when someone clears as well). Music's been used plenty of times. Even fluff pieces were used in Sasuke 2.

The replay fail and main digest themes have been around since the beginning. IIRC we don't know if the main digest theme was used in Sasuke 1, though we do know that the replay fail theme was. On a side note, does anybody find it odd that after 13 years, nobody is yet to identify what the main digest theme is from?

True, assuming the digest theme in 1 wasn't a G4-added theme (unlikely, but this is the same company who edits based on results instead of contestant order), then it was 2 had that the digest theme. Although, I did mean beginning as more of a generalized term.

STOP THE PRESSES!
Yagyu Gaiden was used for Yamada Katsumi's Second Stage clear in SASUKE 4.

STOP THE PRESSES! Yagyu Gaiden was used for Yamada Katsumi's Second Stage clear in SASUKE 4. I only think that was used to transition into the "who's moving on" scene.

Yeah I just noticed that too. I think it was more of a clear theme than a transition theme, but what the heck. Who knows what they intended with such choppy editing back then anyway
