Also, my friend agreed to do full on subtitles for the show when she's done with college apps. She was born in japan and is still fluent, so I trust it'll be very accruate.

Well I guess we start with 27? I can help out since I know my way around fansubbing, as long as you don't mind generic subs (Which should look something Like this). Although that depends on if you want just the script or encoded into the release, or softsubbed or hardsubbed. But I do work with a fansub group so my time to work won't be great but if I have a full script for a tournament I can make the subs

Yeah I was about to ask out of the tournaments we had which one should be subbed first. I don't know if 27 should be first, i was thinking like 19 or 26, maybe 23

I was saying 27 since it's most recent, although I guess we should wait for a good quality raw. We could make one for 26 complete if you want...

This sounds really cool! IIRC nobody has ever done this before (except G4, but those aren't so accurate )! Your friend rules for taking on such a time-consuming task, and I'm sure that tons of English-speaking Sasuke fans around the globe would love it!

Most of the Sasuke clips on [we all know where] are subbed (in Chinese) so maybe it'd be easier to use those, not unless the guy that makes the Chinese subtitles pulls G4s as well (i.e. "gasorin sutando manajaa" = "Shingo clears the Warped Wall!).

The chinese subtitles are the JET broadcasts, they're the official Taiwan ones (Which due to a channel reformatting no longer shows them, Golden Sun TV (Another Taiwan channel) aired 24 and 25 but that's it). Taking the Japanese to Chinese and then to English would cause for translation disasters (assuming we get someone who knows it in on the project), in theory you'd think it's practical but it's much easier having someone who speaks Japanese translating from Japanese straight to English so there are no translation disasters.

So how do anime fansubs normally work? Do subbers dig for scripts or do they play it by ear? I wonder how it would work for SASUKE.

Ooh having English subs will be really great. I don't understand Japanese so I'm usually just seeing people wipe out fantastically. Thanks in advance.

I know of this Japanese dictionary site that allows you to type romaji into the field and it'll bring up every kanji reading it can find, but that's nowhere near enough.
If Ichiro Furutachi really did make witty comments when he narrated, and someone translated these, it'd be great. Don't subtitles themselves actually have to be encoded into the video?

Don't subtitles themselves actually have to be encoded into the video? Not always, In some players you can open the .a** ( Yes that's a real filetype, we went over this in the other topic, I know it's a very funny name for one...) to play over the raw (Although you'd have to make sure you have one with the same timing). The .a** can also be merged with the video into one .mkv and be opened in players that support the format (Which you should be using guys ), this gives you the options to turn the subs on and off at will (Commonly referred to as "Softsubbing"), Or it could be embedded into the video itself (Like in a .mp4 or .avi), when it's embedded into the vid itself so they're always on it's called "Hardsubbing". So it doesn't always have to be actually embedded in the vid but it's possible (and honestly outdated for the most part, but for Sasuke I guess the sub can have a version like that) Also, Blind, How's the translation progress coming? What tournament is she starting with?
