Those face mask Asian people wear when they are sick.... i've seen more than 10 people wearing those things in one tournament... which leads me to think that these people are not sick at all.... maybe they wear them because they want to cheer on their Sweaty smelly relatives/friends during Sasuke. Is there even a place to take a shower between stages? if not it probably stinks up to high heaven on the Midoriyama Set...

It's because they are out in an open field and if it gets windy dust flies all over the place.

If people can go from clean and fresh to incredibly smelly over the course of one day and about ten minutes of exercise, I'd be impressed.
But yeah, sheep is right. David explained long ago that the air quality is very bad in Tokyo.
And I doubt there are showers. I'm yet to see porta potties there.

You're definitely reading too much into this.. Look at Midoriyama.. It's a big dirt lot.. Wind blows the dirt around alot.. Hell.. David said he had problems catching his breath during his run in 22 (Didn't he say it was really bad before the Slider Jump?). Not to mention that people wear those often in Japan so people don't get THEM sick or something.. I know it's not uncommon on subways.. and neither is gr.. you know what.. I'll just keep quiet now...

lol I see a few of those on BART as well... not the mask... but that other thing. the meeting after Sasuke 1 was prolly like this.... okay guys we gotta figure out how to make this course harder without changing the course too much.... I know lets move it outside... the dust will get in these bastards lungs.... that'll stop them from beating the course, and that way we don't have to clean up for sporstman no 1... muhahahahaha On a more serious note... The air can't be as bad there as it is in the Philippines... we have smoky mountain (don't when we got off the plknow what it is? its a huge land fill... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Mountain ) also can't be as bad as New York... when I went there with my Band for a performance at Carnegie Hall... ane and outside the Airport... I felt like I had 50 lbs weighing down on my lungs. Couldn't wait to get home and breath that fresh San Francisco... fresh and less polluted air... prolly lost 5 years of my life being near those places

All industrial type cities have smog. In NYC you have a bigger problem because of everything WEST of it also adding to the problem. L.A. has the same issue. Philly is not as bad though the summer sucks.. Tokyo is one of the worst around the world though.. and that includes the pollen problem that affects ALL of Japan not just Tokyo.. but in Tokyo the pollen problem is reaally bad. Anywhere in the Kanto region is bad though if you speak to anyone that has lived in Japan for any extended period of time.. that cedar will start to bother you pretty quickly. This is the reason why you see so many facemasks in Japan by comparison to other countries. It's a problem that is unique in this world.

that reminds me of that guy William I think his name was... he was in ANW 1 and he got heatstroke after getting the 1 spot for both courses prior to the retarded brick challenge thing I believe. I feel for the guy

If it's pollen/hay fever season, people are wearing masks to avoid breathing in the pollen. If something like H1N1 (or whatever it was) is in the news, people will wear masks to avoid getting sick. Some will wear them during flu season (which is soon). If the wind is just right, recently yellow dust from China has been affecting both Korea and Japan. If it's neither of those three, the people are already sick and trying not to get others sick.
And wearing surgical masks is not just a Japan thing. People in China and South Korea wear them from time to time.
