Kanji often have multiple meanings, so it's possible that there's been a mistranslation that didn't get caught by QA.

Also, it's possible that the left hand (translators) does not know what the right hand (A/V editors) is doing.

I'd love to see staff credits, but I know better by now. (Is G4 non-union?)

I think Ube once said the kanji for Yasushi and Koji are the same. I always thought that G4 did it intentionally, because you can clearly hear the announcer say 'Koji'.

Google translation does mess up quite a few of the names though, Bunpei's spectacularly.

Wekk I think that there must be someone doing the names, and then they tell the subbers what the names are even though they can clearly hear Koji.
Although I relooked at it and noticed G4 can't be using google because right above where it says Yasushi Yamada it says "Nobuharu Kobayashi" and the description apears to be about Kobayashi Shinji who they named correctly. Although who really screws up is the guy who tells Dave Wittenberg how to pronounce the names, I mean he mutilates the names (Yet I've seen some Anime where hes gotten japanese names right, OK, its rare but still). Especially poor Komiya, They say Rie like the bread.


And considering Google is supposed to translate I guess its understandable that they call him White Swan considering White Bird is what Shiratori means aperantly (I knew Shiroi was right but then again, this topic proves I can't trust the source that said tori was bird, Sasuke 15 Stage 2 subs)

Tori is the very generic word for bird. Shiratori literally means a white bird. The kanji can be also be read as hakuchou, which is the Japanese name for swan.

Well I'm slowly picking up japanese from reading your posts (such as this) as well as other things I do to learn japanese (Hell, I pick up some words from Anime occasially) so thats gotta count for something.

Finally someone brings it up, name mutilation. I know that America doesn't need to pronounce things the exact way Japan does, but Wittenberg gets on my nerves, when yelping you know who's name wrong.

Oh I just thought everyone gets the idea that I like Nagasaki and yeah I'm picky about his name. Nagasaki Shunsuke, it doesn't necessarily have to be last name first and with every conceivable Japanese accent into pronunciation.

Wait, actually yes it does. It's Nagasaki Shunske, lol yes why keep the extra vowel when they always say it like 2 syllables? I like it like that, and Dave Wittenberg has said Shunsookay Nagasakee for the last time.

Because you're going to run up against every text that includes romanization of Japanese outside of Ohio State.

How is it SUPPOSED to be pronounced then,because from what you typed, that actually looks correct xo unless you're just being nitpicky, we do have accents, so we shouldn't expect to get names perfectly, and from what I can ell from your post it sounds like he got the name right.

Shun-s'kay. As in, Sah-s'kay. I think it's still technically correct, just 'su' is usually pronounced very quickly in Japanese. I don't think he can be blamed for not pronouncing it exactly the Japanese way.

Nah.. I hear all the time Japanese correct everyone on the pronunciation of their name. They may be lax on some words.. but not their name. They do it with a smile though.. Like "NAH.. Kah. dah..".. Not Na KAH dah... please get it right..
