Well first, holy s*** that's some crazy news. But second, I think TBS is a little late here. I agree that Wipeout is a knockoff and I think they can win the case if presented properly. However, Wipeout is already done. It was a summer series and I think it's time has passed. If they had done this at the beginning of the summer, when Wipeout was first on the air, then I think it would have made a bigger impact.

This seems a little unnecessary.

I'm honestly not surprised. And aperantly I wasn't the only one who saw obstacle similarities. Kind of neutral regarding this case though, I don't want TBS being ripped off, But I like watching Wipeout though.

With the courts as slow as they are.. I sincerely doubt that they JUST came up with this idea. I mean when it first came on we ALL thought it was Takeshi's castle. As they mentioned in the case.. it was not just the obstacles but also the narration, the tone.. everything was an American version of MXC.

Im for TBS somply because I want more people to watch ninja warrior instead. But in all fairness, its not like they run at the same time. The ratings arn't conflicted as much if they played it during Sasuke season. It seems only fair.

Do all the Big Brother / Survivor / dance-show / etc rip off shows have some kind of legal protection I'm unaware of? This doesn't seem a particularly isolated or unusual situation.

Well crap, why isn't MTV suing everybody else? Didn't they originally come up with the whole reality TV thing? And further more, why isn't NBC suing all other game shows out there? I mean, they did come up with the very first game show and all others are nothing but blatant rip offs! Seriously, I think they only reason TBS is jumping on the American Band Wagon that is the frivilous lawsuit is because "Endemol is actively selling the show’s format around the world, directly competing with the formats for TBS’ series." As long as there is enough to differenciate between programs then it won't hold in court. We've argued this on the G4 boards before. Sure, it's more like Takeshi’s Castle than Sasuke, but really, it's more of it's own thing. TBS just doesn't want the worldwide competition from what I can gleam of this. I'm sure if you look past the history of Takashi and other TBS shows, they've been ripped from shows of similar make. So I'd just call this "The case of the Pot calling the Kettle Black."

I think TBS is going to win this one. Almost all the obstacles are designed to be a straight rip of Takeshi's Castle/MXC, narrated the same way, looks the same, feels the same. Heck when it came out the G4 boards exploded because it was MXC all over again. Considering that TBS still makes money off of an English dub of the show that will compete with Wipeout in Japanese markets (when ABC sells it).. they have a legitimate claim. I'm curious to see what comes out of the lawsuit.
As for the shows like Big Brother/American Idol... they are produced by the originator of the concept (the Brits). Almost all the "American" versions are still somewhat connected or have permission from their British counterparts and that's the only reason why they survive.

Yea, Simon Cowell is responsibile for that. TBS wins hands down.

And TBS doesn't have anything to do with it as much as Monster9 does, but the Big Balls seriously remind me of Viking's Cannonball Run

Just thought I would infrom everyone that the British version of Wipeout (called Total Wipeout) premires tommorow evening over here. I havent watched much of the U.S version but it looks exactly the same. 'Big Balls', 'The Sweeper' and something that looks exactly like the Super Jump is on the advert. On the basis of this I'm guessing something must have happenend in regards to the TBS lawsuit

Was it this? Its a Water Slide, you usually get some kind of board to sit on though EDIT: Heres a vid from the US one that has the basic version of the Wipeout Zone (night course, the last stage) and has the water being turned on

Ok im not trying to start an argument. I saw it for less than a second its similar to that it probably is that and im wrong. Whether it is or not isn't the point. I only wanted to make the point that they are selling the show in what appears to be the same format abroad which means that the lawsuit may have ended in one way or another

That's not necessarily true.. sometimes these things go on forever.. And the fact that the main argument is that it will be sold to South East Asia which is the stronghold of TBS is the main part of the case. Even if it goes for a long time (which most of this caliber do) they will just get proceeds of any earnings the show makes as part of settlement.
