I just realized that no one has brought up how close Nagano was to the prize money. I know that isn't the main point of Sasuke, but when you consider his brand new family, it's easy to see how tht money could have provided a fair amount of financial security.
The prize money didn't cross my mind once during the broadcast, but after watching the Final Stage a couple of times over, it did cross my mind.

What? Did he already spend all of 17s?
Then again I'm sure that would be enough to live on for a couple of years and have a wedding, or maybe he used it for the wedding and the rest is being saved.

yeah $20,000 is nothing....it kinda makes me sick how little prize money they give out when you think about how small the jackpot is, how they've only paid out 2x in 11 years and how wipeout the "joke" show pays out $50,000 every single episode!
Sasuke jackpot should be like $200,000 at least!

It's more like 32 grand, but yeah, it's not that much. You could live decently for a year.

Wikipedia says it's 4,000,000 yen which works out to $40,000 give or take a gew grand depending on the current exchange rate. The official TBS page recently stated the prize money being $2,000,000 yen though which is only about $20,000!
That amount of money, if you have rent and bills will just be gone quick without you really even noticing that you did anything with it.
I came into $10,000 a few years back and it was gone in about 6mo. I spent $2000 on a motorcycle but other than that I stayed pretty frugile, it just made it easier to make rent and bills for a while and then it was gone.
The moral of the story is that the amount of time spent training and making videos and the money spent building obstacles and flying/driving out to tryouts will never pay for itself even IF you are able to complete the course. Just multiply the hours spent working towards Sasuke by the current minimum wage in your state.
So yeah the moral is if you're doing it for prize money don't bother, it's not worth it.

Sasuke jackpot should be like $200,000 at least! $20,000 for the first victory was fair enough, especially since that was the amount awarded to the toughest Banzuke events. However, it should not be there now. $100,000 should be the minimum but I think $250,000 or even $500,000 is fair considering how infrequent victory is.

Why cant they just make it like the lottery and if there isn't a winner just roll the money over into the next tourney. Hell Nagano would of been Oprah rich if it rolled all the way from 4 till 17 when he beat it last, hahahah!

I dunno... I personally would like them to take the prize away. Call me crazy, but the amount they currently have already seems like a slap in the face. Then, anyone competing truly isn't doing it for the money.
In fact, I honestly thought that there was no prize mentioned when I began training, and thought that it was just an unannounced prize, if any. And I was more than fine with that.

I disagree. I think it should remain there just as a nice gesture to anyone hardcore enough to beat all the stages.

Then, anyone competing truly isn't doing it for the money. That's the point. If all the wikipedia entries are accurate, there is/was a law restricting maximum game show winnings to 2 million yen per head per show. There have been laws like these in other countries (including the US, though those have just been network and company policies). Part of it is to discourage foul play a la the US quiz show scandals, but another part is to make sure a game show is more about entertainment and competition than cash and prizes. I'd be right with the rest of you for upping the prize money (¥10M sounds nice), but I'm sure M9's hands are tied with that.

Makes sense.

japanese.about.com/library/weekly/aa102100.htm"The Japanese version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" was called "Kuizu Mirioneraa (Quiz $ Millionaire)" and started in April. It was the first foreign TV format to be shown in Japanese prime time. The prize money was limited to10 million yen (about $108,000) by Japanese law, far less than their American counterparts. " So they're just cheap

Then again, stuff is crazy expensive over there, so 10 million yen would get you... well, not much.

The prize money was limited to 10 million yen (about $108,000) by Japanese law, far less than their American counterparts. Yup. Both the player and his/her 4 Phone-A-Friends (all crammed in a room at the studio during taping) would get 2 mil each. It's interesting to watch, really. All four tackle the question with no speakerphone.

I think the prize for clearing SASUKE should be now around £100,000 whatever that is in Yen lol.

It's not really that stuff is expensive, RC. It's the fact that their money is worthless. So, while eggs may cost, say, 200 dollars, a family may make 2 million dollars a year working simple factory jobs. Another example is here in the US; back in the day, gas was a nickel and a dollar bought groceries for a week. Not anymore, right? I think the prize should be doubled again to 8 million yen.
