Just thought I'd start a bit of a discussion here.
I've been moving and trying to eat a lot healthier. Not eating fast food as much, not snacking on garbage like twinkies, eating more vegetables etc...
But I'm a coke addict.
As in, the soda...
Is that so bad? Will it really help me in the long run by not drinking soda anymore or should I just not care and drink it anyway?
Your thoughts, soda... good or bad? How does it affect your health, training etc?

Soda is nothing but empty calories and useless junk. Those calories will make it harder to burn fat if you ever want to and don't really support anything. Therefore, it should be avoided.
But that's just my view on things. I have training plans that soda inhibits, so I need to stop drinking it.

Water, Gatorade, Kool-aid, milk and orange juice are all I can recommend.
I actually don't have too big of a problem stopping it, but the lack of caffeine gives me a major headache.

All I drink is water and milk with those Carnation Instant Breakfast Essentials Chocolate Pack thingies (whether they help or not, I don't really care, It makes the milk more interesting, plus the nutrition info is convincing enough) and once in a while some pearl drinks like milk tea or thai tea or something, and a few cans of soda if my mom brings em home from wherever she finds em. I always tell my parents not to buy any soda no matter how cheap it is because if we have them then I'm going to drink them. No energy drinks for me either. Whenever I hear someone brag about how many energy drinks they had one night or something, I think "That's terrible! That's not something you should brag about!"
I went crazy with the stuff back in high school. I'd chug a 24oz Monster right before school throughout my last two years. There was a time where I'd pull an all-nighter and drink 4-5 16oz Rockstars. I'm certainly not proud of it. I didn't drink them because I felt I needed the energy to not sleep or anything. Anyway Monster just ended up having this weird bubblegum-ish taste and it made me gag, and the regular Rockstar would dry my throat and the taste would make me gag anyway (probably because I drank so much), so I just tried cheaper ones. Back in California, there was this 99cent one that was covered with the US flag, forgot what it was called, but it was good. Then after moving to Texas I got into the 24:7, just the green, blue, and yellow ones. Not bad. I never got sick of the taste. Then I got into the Rockstar Pomegranate only because Tom Thumb was selling 24packs for less than 20 bucks I think and not because it says "pomegranate" on it; I just like the taste. During October of last year I just decided that I didn't want to have any more energy drinks and I haven't had one since. I haven't felt any different.
Anyway, enough of my life story. Since I've been clean (of energy drinks) for almost a year now, I kinda don't wanna have another one now because then I wouldn't be able to say "Oh, I haven't had an energy drink in 'this long'." and then look all proud and show that you don't really need that stuff. Usually when my peers are complaining about how little energy they have as they down some coffee or an energy drink, I ask them... "Oh... How much sleep did you have?" and then they usually say "about 3-4 hours"... and then I have a WTF-moment in my head then I say, "I see" and I just keep nodding my head as I slowly walk away.

I'm a bit different though, I don't drink for the cafeinne or the energy, I just like the taste, and I hate tea, I hate coffee, i hate milk... So am I just supposed to drink water and fruit juice my whole life? =p That's the dilema, but at the same time I don't want to drink it because well... it's not good for you. I guess in moderation it's not so bad, but it's not like that. Maybe I need some kool-aid.

I'm the same way. I drink it for the taste and carbonation. I really can't stand water by itself.
But, I'm going to suck it up and just live off water. It's the best thing to do.

Coca-Cola is the reason I train for Sasuke. Seriously.
When in high-school, I used to drink 2 liters of Coca-Cola a day. And in winter, that was great, cause I could leave it in my car and either it would get really cold, or it would become Coke Slushies.
However, like I said, I drank that EVERY DAY. It took a toll on my personality, and as I'm sure you already know, High Schoolers already have messed up personalities due to puberty. Well, mine went down the toilet.
I was furious all the time, and hated absolutely everything in life. Kicked chairs, cussed people out, etc.
The two together eventually caused my stomach to 'explode' more or less, and it gave me an ulcer I'll never get rid of. Ever.
But it forced me to stop drinking caffinated drinks (Coffee or Coca Cola), chocolate, or alcohol.
That in turn forced me to eat healthier, and that in turn helped me start enjoying life dramatically more than I ever have in life.
And due to all of that healthy food, I have been able to train for Sasuke. I've always wanted to compete in such a thing, but if it wasn't for the ulcer, I'd still be drinking 2 liters of Coca Cola a day, wondering why I never would be able to compete since I wasn't healthy enough, and I'd therefore still be complaining about life.

i'm not religious, but i gave up soda for lent when i was in high school. after it was over, i never really had the urge to drink it again.
drinking soda every day is terrible for you... its liquid candy. pure crap. and some of you say you dislike water? is a human capable of disliking water? that's like hating air!
even electrolyte drinks are a gimmick, they have so much sugar. water is really the only thing you need. and if you're in college, not buying beverages saves a ton of money, hah.
if you have to drink something unhealthy, at least drink something that makes women appear more attractive, haha. in moderation! i usually mess that part up.

If you're really serious about nutrition, you'll suck it up and drink water, milk and orange juice. I'm not trying to be harsh, but that's all there is to it. We need to actually suck it up and just drink it. I'm sure we'd adjust to it over a few weeks.
Then, if you're serious about training, you'll have some energy drinks (store bought or homemade) and protein shake mix (whey protein) around. That's some more stuff to drink.
Greg, I hate the water where I live because it actually leaves a funny feeling in my mouth. The chemicals/minerals in this water is unbelievable, and not in a good way. My entire house will one day have a massive water filter on it so I don't have to put up with this crap.

I never had problems of this kind...probably because I don't really like soda and that kind of things. Never bought energy drinks - I don't need them. If I don't have energy, it means that I haven't slept as I should have, or that I'm ill. My problem, for some reason, is chocolate, but I found a way not to eat a lot. Don't hide it trying to avoid seeing it, and when you feel like you're going to take some don't reply "I must not take it", but "Do I really physically want it?" if the answer is yes, go reading a book or playing computer or something like that. If you need some so much that you can't do this sort of things, then go and take some, but keep trying every time.
@oti luckily where I live water is fine, but when I have trips I notice how much water sucks in some places, and I end up buying huge bottles. I didn't think in America this was such a problem...I really don't remember it.

Things in America are way worse than they seem. When my girlfriend's Australian cousin came to visit America, he said he was shocked that America was in such bad shape. Corruption, greed, poor food/water quality... As far as they knew in Australia, America was still the land of opportunity.
Luckily for you, you can drink bottled water. Here in America, bottled water is the same as or worse than tap water. Filtration laws are so relaxed that companies let all kinds of crap into their "pure" water. It's gotten so bad recently that you're better off just getting a filter and drinking tap water.

(I've also never gotten a diet related cavity in my life.

Australia's been having serious drought problems for many years now haven't they? Wasn't there also a really crazy sand/dust storm last week? Did a search on Flickr and it's scary stuff. www.flickr.com/search/?q=sydney+sandstorm#page=0 It's like Mars... or the apocalypse. But yeah, one of these days I'm gonna put in a whole house water filter because I like the idea of having one given how there always seems to be news of bad water somewhere.

Soda is definitely a hard 'drug,' as I like to call it, to get rid of. The first week without it will definitely make you go crazy, but once you suck it up and get through it, or in other words, once that stuff finally drains out of your system, You'll feel so much better. If you really want something that tastes pretty good. I'd recommend getting into smoothies. Fruits, and even vegetables. I prefer to make my own, but most places have at least one smoothie place to go to. Actually, Nestle Bottle Water is not THAT bad for you. Well, except for the plastic. There is supposedly Flouride in our water supply where I live at least, and I guess some people don't consider that such a bad thing, but to me it's a waste that's not that great for you. And it's something even a filter can't eliminate. And Nestle Bottled water uses Reverse Osmosis to actually remove the Flouride. But still, then again. Nestle uses those plastic bottles that are not that great for you either. XD So pretty much, we're all screwed.

Smoothies are something I can definitely get into.
There seems to be fluoride in most bottled water in the US. I hear that most of Europe has actually rejected fluoride in water. We already have enough fluoride in our toothpaste anyway.
There are reverse osmosis filtration systems for your kitchen sink, but they're anywhere from 200-600 dollars.
You can try using a stainless steel bottle or canteen or whatever they call 'em. Don't bother with the aluminum ones because the companies that make them have to use some sort of lining on the inside that hasn't been entirely safe.
If you're gonna drink from plastic water bottles, just make sure they haven't been cooking in the sun or they haven't been sitting around in some old crusty basement for storage for a few years because the plastic is actually very porous, so the water inside'll end up tasting like dust and dirty and whatever was in the air around it for those few years.
