If lets say all the people who cleared were 1-6 would it have made a difference? I mean they showed a tester take on the course first which I thought defeated the whole purpose of the race.
My opinion is that it likely didn't matter much at all since the tester made it to the Flying Chute and none of them were failing Sasuke 18's verson of the Flying chute.

Nagano initially drew a number in the 50s(?) in 18 but was given #96 because the producers felt that the recent champion running that early just didn't make sense editing and suspense-wise. 25 had #98-100 as the three champions, and all of the notable competitors had numbers ending in a 9 or 0 (e.g. the other four finalists from Sasuke 24 wore #40, #50, #60, and #80) to make sure no matter what they'd have the stronger guys spread throughout the field. I think they had a separate lottery for the veterans maybe. Hence producers themselves would agree with this because even when they've gone for a lottery approach it's still been somewhat controlled. If it was a completely free lottery and they did one today, there's a good chance that, say, Yusuke would get #10, or Snowman/Darvish etc. would get like #5 or whatever, which would obviously ruin the pacing that Inui wants to have on the show, leading up to the high-profile competitors' runs in the later and more serious part of Stage 1. It would also completely suck if all of the strongest competitors get <#80 and the last 20 runs, which usually represent the really nail-biting part of the stage, comprise just rando fails and comedians etc. resulting in a very anti-climactic ending.

Do you find it weird that if their goal was to have all 100 fail stage 1, that they had a tester go first to show them how to do the course? Also I didn't realize they changed the order a bit, makes sense they wanted to keep it somewhat resembling the norm.

Also I didn't realize they changed the order a bit, makes sense they wanted to keep it somewhat resembling the norm. Two things to mention: 1) Testers are often fully aware of the course before turning up and likely tested the individual obstacles beforehand, so they'd know the exact approach/technique. We've seen quite a few cases of testers beating obstacles that fail some of the most established veterans. 28's Stage 3 preview saw a tester clearing the Crazy Cliffhanger, which ended that tournament, for example. 2) I believe the "fail all 100 in Stage 1" was the initial vision but time and budget restrictions were clearly an issue with 18. They didn't have enough budget so had to reuse a bunch of VIKING stuff (which is why there were so many net and rope obstacles), and even then, due to lack of budget and/or time, they still didn't have a full course, meaning they had to shoe horn in a bunch of crappy stuff like the Bungee Bridge, Net Bridge, etc. I don't believe 18 was the course the producers fully envisioned for the renewal, supported by the fact that they went all out when it came to 19, replacing the stinker obstacles with the Half-Pipe Attack and others on later stages, and buffing everything where possible. That was clearly the calibre of course they wanted to showcase but needed a full year of funding and ideation time for them to create it. Yeah full randomisation would never work because they still ultimately want the show to have good pacing in the way that the producers desire/know the fans will respond positively to. The recent tournaments have kinda been quite similar where quite a few competitors could go anywhere from #1-80; spreading out the field means the fans never have too long to wait for someone they want to see. Rather than 50 joke competitors/randos/comedians etc. failing early in a row before we get a clear. Also given the number of celebrities we get these days who get hoards of screentime, having them all bunched together would be painful. The current approach satisfies both parties imo (the hardcore fans and those tuning into see HIKAKIN etc.).
