Shingo's consistency in the late Golden Era is pretty undeerrated imo.
Everyone remembers him for his infamous "fail every even tournament, do well every odd tournament from Sasuke 4-10, or his later track record of funny fails; and his streak in the later Golden Era is overshadowed by Nagano and Takeda.
But let's not forget that he could've very easily had 7 straight Stage 3s from 11-17 just like Takeda, as his Wall Lift timeout in 13 and his Jump Hang fail in 16 were arguably avoidable freak accidents. His fails in 8 and 10 were also fairly close Rope Climb fails, the latter of which only happened because he took too much time on the Tarzan Rope.
It's a shame that when he really started to become consistent was when his chances of beating Stage 3 started to dwindle, as 11-17 was also when he started to regress on every subsequent Stage 3 attempt.
I think because he's provided a good amount of comic relief with his fails in recent tournaments (bar 40 of course), everyone harkens back to other funny fails from earlier in his career because "Shingo moment", forgetting that he actually destroyed most Stage 1s back in the day which is the stage that he tends to choke on fairly perennially now.
Same with Yamada. Because he's got that infamous unrecoverable Stage 1 fail streak from 14, people forget that he was arguably the most consistent competitor on Stage 1 before that streak, with 10 clears in the first 12 tournaments, which could've been 11 if he'd not tried to run up the wet part of the wall in Sasuke 8. I'd also argue he was the only Kanzen candidate from, say, Sasuke 5 until 11, for no other reason than he was the only competitor able to get past Stage 1 and have a shot at beating the Final, but again this sentiment is underrated because he frequently failed Stage 2 and dived off pretty quickly after his hiatus.

There is always unfortunately one thing that make him doubt himself in every Second Stage failure during this period. If only he had better mental state, he would have done it. Again, I argue, SASUKE 6 is his prime tournament and looks how easy he destroy the course (he is also overall looks happier during this tournament, something I never see afterwards except for small moments with Nagano in SASUKE 12). If only ....

If only .... Stage 2 was definitely a mental block for him, arguably more so than Keitaro. Granted his first three fails on it were due to circumstance; in 1 he just got knocked off, 2 he was done in by weather, and in 5 he just slipped off the buffed Spider Walk. But his fails in 9, 11, and 12 were all a case of mental self-sabotage due to being plagued by his previous failures. All three were a case of him openly stating that he was concerned about a certain obstacle, and then proceeding to fail that very obstacle, due to overcompensation or just mentally choking. In 9, he taped up his shoes to circumvent the failures he experienced before on the SW, which led to his infamous timeout due to taking too long to remove the tape. In 11 before his run he mentioned he was worried about the Balance Tank, despite having cleared it in 10, and ended up failing it this tournament. Then we know the story with 12; given his history with the SW I'm almost certain he didn't remove his gloves on purpose, given his past issues, and also mentioned that he wanted to clear the Spider Walk quickly. I seriously doubt that he just forgot as this had never happened before, and it was mandated enough that everyone adhered to it. His fear of the obstacle and what he did that tournament couldn't have been a coincidence. But yeah, from 5 to 11 I couldn't have seen anyone else winning bar him. I don't think Shingo would've been able to beat the new Final, Akiyama couldn't get past Stage 1 to save his life during this period, Nagano and Bunpei hadn't broken out properly yet, and Takeda's only near-Stage 3 clear (Sasuke 8) would've had him attempting the tower in the soaking rain while all of his other attempts were fairly early fails like Body Prop and Lamp Grasper.
