If you could pick one competitor to take on each stage, which would you pick to maximise the chance of your team clearing all 4 stages? To make it a lot harder and more interesting, I'll say you can't pick the same competitor for more than one stage (I know most would otherwise pick Jun Sato for Stages 1 and 2, and Morimoto for 3 and 4). Also, let's assume the stages are identical to the ones in SASUKE 38. Here are mine:
Stage 1 - Jun Sato: has the most consistent track record of any competitor on Stage 1 in history, having cleared an unprecedented 9 times in a row, and out of the last 5 tournaments, 3 of his Stage 1 runs have been the fastest time that tournament. He's a professional parkour instructor so Stage 1 is arguably his biggest strength, given that often your life is on the line if you make a mistake in the sport. I'm going with him due to his flawless track record.
Stage 2 - Masashi Hioki: I would pick Sato for Stage 2 as well if I could, but as I can't I'll go with Hioki as he's very nearly as consistent. He's cleared Stage 2 with more than 10 seconds left in the last 4 tournaments consecutively, without any issues whatsoever.
Stage 3 - Yusuke Morimoto: given that the Cliffhanger Dimension has yet to be seen in full working form, the safest bet imo is Yusuke given that he's the only competitor to have reached the Cliffhanger at least 5 times without ever failing it. He's also been practicing for the moving ledges, and we all know the Vertical Limit is no issue for him. So I think he's the most likely competitor to clear the new Stage 3 hence my decision.
Stage 4 - Keitaro Yamamoto: again, I would pick Yusuke here if I could given that he would've achieved Kanzen in 36 had it not been for the wind, but as quite a left field choice I'm going with Keitaro. This might be an odd ball choice given that we've never seen him on Stage 3 let alone 4, but I've seen how fast he is on the Salmon Ladder and Spider Walk in practice; faster than Morimoto I'd argue. Also, the reason why I didn't do it the other way round is that there are more opportunities to make fatal errors in Stage 3 than 4, which is far more likely in the case of Keitaro given that he's never made it there before and Yusuke's track record is fairly robust on Stage 3.
Some rationale for people I didn't pick:
- Didn't pick Ryo for Stage 3 because as I understand he doesn't train that much anymore so I reckon that'll result in him being caught out by the CHD, or the VLK again.
- Didn't pick Araki for Stage 4 just because I think Keitaro is faster on the Salmon Ladder and Spider Climb.
- Didn't pick Kawaguchi for Stage 2 just because he did choke on the Backstream in 35 randomly; Hioki's only failed Stage 2 when the stage has been significantly bumped in difficulty (i.e. 29 and 33).
