I made this thread a while back discussing the potential for the UCCH+VLK to be beaten in competition. Provided it returns for SASUKE 35 (which it probably will), do you think anyone has a reasonable shot at clearing it yet? Also, since this tournament will most likely be taped in winter, how much of an effect do you think the weather will play in the combo finally being defeated?

Morimoto - he made a big progress on vertical limit Kawaguchi, Drechsel - they need a good timing Urushihara - he can beat UCCH Matachi - he needs clear stage 1 and 2, he has the biggest potential Some others competitors like Tatsuya Tada, Keitaro Yamamoto, Yuki Hirayama, Geoff Britten, Sean Mccoll, Joe Moravsky,... But winter is big problem - cold muscles are not good, we want a perfect performance

I don't see them beating it yet, not for a while. And if they do, I doubt that means they'll clear Stage 3. Drew and Yusuke are the only ones who even made it to the Vertical Limit, and I don't see a repeat happening in the winter.

Morimoto, Tomo and Drew are physically capable of it. It's all a matter of doing it live, pardon the phrase. Everyone touts Yuuji and Ryo but Yuuji needs to get his tank to a point where he can clear Stage 2 (and our only measure of reference is the original CCH which he failed and then had his slump) never mind reach the death combo. Ryo has been mentally checked out for years. Maybe his best friend having renewed life can motivate him, but for all intents and purposes, Ryo has been a bust post-30.
The problem is all reasonable measures such as strength and technique are heavily doused by the luck of the timing. The original CCH was about the technique of the swing to just catch the other side and the strength in your hands to absorb the jolt from the catch. Now you have to do that twice AND on the 2nd time, hope you timed the moving ledge to where it's at its lowest. It says something when the rock climbing testers can barely clear it who do it at full strength and stamina. It's a lot to ask of someone especially when they've just spent the last few minutes on the two previous obstacles without a break. It's why my pipedream is them relenting and at least adding a break point after the UCCH. A lot of things in the world are physically possible, but what makes people balk is when the expectation of someone is past reasonable. That's the UCCH + VLK.
We've not even discussed the difficulty of the VLK, which is a doozy in and of itself. Morimoto struggled on the 31 version with the gap. He barely got halfway through the first ledge last tournament. Now doing all that during winter? Unless it's an oddly warm taping night, or they somehow heat the course I doubt it.
The record for longest span of tournaments without a Final Stage is 4 (18-21). If no one clears the Third Stage in 35, the span from 32-35 will tie that record. I think that will happen (the record being tied). But for what it's worth, 21 was the furthest someone had gotten before we got a Final Stage in the next tournament.

It is virtually impossible. The athletes need to get through the previous obstacles quickly which is doable. But we have seen with Drew that trying to get through ucch as quickly as possible to save stamina for vlk means taking a big gamble on the jumps. If anyone is going to beat the combo they have no choice but to just go all in like Drew has the past 2 years and just pray to get lucky with the height. There is no option to hang around and make sure of the height is just right. Unless they introduce a breather.

Well... I think you may grab the green bar and fall off :/ If you clear the UCCH and VLK combo, you are virtually left with almost zero strength left. Yusuke fail halfway through the first, Drew lost the grip immediately. The scenario of someone clearing this combo is not gonna happen. Even if you clear it, do you have anything left to grab the resting bar and pull you up?

I heard Ryo attempted this combo in 33, how did he do? Also, what they should do in my opinion is just add a bar in between the UCCH and VLK.

I'm with the 99% who believe it's borderline impossible. If anyone can do it, my bets would be put on Drew, Kawaguchi, Ryo, Yusuke, and while I don't believe he's competed, FINCLI No. 3. He has videos of him training on Youtube, and his skills are literally ridiculous. But I think this will happen at 9:04pm on the summer solstice, and when the moon is exactly 230,000 miles away from the Earth, while both the Queen of England and the Pope are enjoying a frozen yogurt. TL;DR, it's not gonna happen.

I could see Ryo getting to at least the second VLK section (Especially since he was doing this combo only, so he wasn't tired)

As far as I see it, I fear it's pretty much impossible without a break in between. Too much is leading up to it and even if someone like Yusuke or Drew managed to get there without expending so much energy, luck plays a huge part on if you make it or not. Skill is almost 2nd best to this obstacle.

It's not impossible, just improbable The obstacle can definitely be done (not sure if it ever will be), if competitors plan out every move. Get through the Drum Hopper and Flying Bar with only one swing between each jump and only take a few seconds on each pillar for Sidewinder R Kai. Then take the full test after these and chalk-up for the Ultra Crazy Cliffhanger. I think bigger moves would help here, kind of like Drew Did. I think, if he figures out the time he takes to clear the first parts, he should be able to find the timing of the bouncing ledge, and when to begin the obstacle, in relation to the moving part. Think his maximum if everything goes perfectly is reaching out for the second part of the Vertical Limit. I feel like Yusuke could do it without showboating (I know the chalk thing technically wasn't showing-off, but I think it ended up working out worse for him) and by being gentle but quick when transitioning from each Vertical Limit Ledge. I hope they keep it. It's a great challenge (and possible) and it would seem like they're lowering the stakes if it's removed. And I'm sure it will return, slightly modified if anything. People will have to build some sort of replica or at least practice a ton of consecutive ledge transitions. Regarding the bars, I think having one between the two obstacles would hurt the competitors. I know I find it extremely hard to transfer from a grippy bar to a tiny ledge. The green bar at the end could do someone in as it such an awkward backwards reach.

Not in the upcoming one TBH. It's cold so the bars will be frozen again (same problems as last time) and unless they change the material for the VLK then everyone will just slip off again. I do think they may change it though given the criticisms.

Kishimoto Shinya could do it. He really did explode onto the scene back in 30 but hasn't clicked since then. If we're going by 30 Shinya, yeah he's a top contender. We'll see if he's well for 35...

Kishimoto Shinya could do it. He has to get back there first honestly I don't think he has the coordination for the current stage 1s
