This was unexpected. I still hope that Viktor Ahn is still competing. In Korea, he's the main attraction to the short course speed skating in Pyeongchang since leaving Korea after scandals involving the South Korea's Speed Skating Team.

In Korea, he's the main attraction to the short course speed skating in Pyeongchang since leaving Korea after scandals involving the South Korea's Speed Skating Team. I expected it so it's not at all surprising. Now comes the question of how many athletes will cross the picket line if Russia decides to boycott the decision (meaning stopping individual athletes from still competing under a neutral flag). btw.. should we do a thread for this alone? We have done so before with other Olympics. I'll ask mods to see if they want to split this and make a new thread just for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

My attention is on the KHL. The KHL is a part of the IIHF, which forces the national leagues to release players for their national teams (like FIFA). Since the NHL isn't a part of this, the NHL can (and has) opted out of the Olympics. Now there are some reports that the KHL could leave the IIHF, and opt out of the Olympics, screwing over a bunch of Canadians and Americans and other non-Russian hockey players playing in the KHL

Personally, I'm fine with a separate Olympics thread given the infrequency of them.

This has happened before in the 1980's. I remember a bunch of Russians winning medals with the IOC flag. Thanks for the update!

I know they've had Olympic teams in the past, but is North Korea going to compete in this year's Olympics?

I know they've had Olympic teams in the past, but is North Korea going to compete in this year's Olympics? I don't want to sound political about this, but it sounds like North Korea will participate in the Winter Games with only 2 members (which is the duo figure skating since they did well in the world championship to qualify). The media in the South is going all crazy on North Korea. But the 2 life as are communicating, so it's a good thing as of lately, South Korea and North Korea are going along as seen in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, and memorable pictures and speeches in the recent Summer Olympics. Getting back to the real thing, I am actually very excited for the Olympics, it was a shame that South Korea didn't do well in Sochi, but hopefully we can create history in Pyeongchang. 대한민국!

Supposedly they will be competing under one flag. What this means for the future is anyone's guess hough TBH it doesn't mean anything. This has happened before with the Russian provinces and even with Korea in general and nothing had changed afterward. This is a sporting event. Nothing more - nothing less.

Throughout numerous sources, North Korea will send 22 athletes to Pyeongchang to compete in the Winter Games following a deal today. It's also been confirmed that North and South Korea will be competing as a unified country as Korea.
