I wAs thinking... What if it came to America, like ANW? Or even re-ran like Sasuke was on G4... Would it work?

It seems like Ninja Warrior has been the most successful re-run. (Not counting ANW since new episodes are made constantly) Viking on ESPN2 didn't seem to be a big hit, so I'd possibly watch it, I was never really a fan of Pro Sportsman so I would only pay half attention. As for what I was talking about before, I don't think it'd really work well as a reboot over here.

I'd like an American Pro Sportsman, or at least a Banzuke-like re-air. Then again, I've always wanted the other KB stuff outside of what was shown on G4/some kind of American successor. I'd imagine team owners wouldn't like other athletes besting their players/potential injuries arising even though I think the former is unfounded.

I totally see the whole "athlete injury" case, but what if they did one for average joes and another for celebrities?

I'm a HUGE fan of Sportsman. At this rate the only place it would run if it's totally untouched would be ESPN Classic since there were a lot of old celebs that graced that show. It will never happen though which is a shame. I don't want a revival here in the USA as they would totally screw it up but wouldn't mind seeing the old episodes. If TBS renewed it I'd reaaaaaally be happy but they can't since it was part of M9 and they only chose to save Sasuke since Sasuke was cheaper to do. Inui already does a version of it called Sports Danshi and I enjoy that.

As far as injuries go, lots of pro athletes in the states have clauses that say if they get injured doing something either prohibited by their contract (NBA players, for example, are prohibited from playing basketball that is not connected to their teams) or related to such they could be found in breach of their contract and let g from their team. Naturally, some of this is at the team's discretion. MLB used to send a rep to Pro Sportsman (I have no idea how that person was chosen - in later years it was usually someone known for their speed. And then there was the year Sammy Sosa appeared). So pro athletes may be able to appear on a US version but they'd be taking their careers in their own hands. I'm sure Japanese pro athletes have the same clauses but they usually get paid way less than their US counterparts. But athletes are celebrities here and celebrities are required to do anything for the audience.
The big thing if they do it in the states is that they may not necessarily play for money prizes, maybe only for charity. If they do for charity, that might be better as it would be more palatable (the idea of famous people getting more money for entertaining you in way they don't normally on TV is more common in Japan than it is in the West).
However, those two points, athletes protecting their livelihoods and doing it for charity would probably kill any sort of competitive fire and negate the whole point of the show.
(Yes, Battle of the Network Stars and Superstars got prize money and Superstars featured pro athletes but up until the last twenty years or so actors and athletes weren't getting nearly the amount they get now. On a sidenote: Superstars was a bigger thing in the UK than it was in the US, can any UK SMF members comment on it? Especially the 2012 post-Olympic version. Both the US and the UK versions were on hiatus during the mid 2000s - which is fortunate for SASUKE since that was when it made it's stateside - i.e. English language - debut.)
