Now that stage 1 is over with, I thought I'd see what people thought as to the most shocking fail, or fails. For me, there were several.
1. Isaac Caldiero failing the Jumping Spider: He seemed so strong throughout the obstacles, and even the landing, but as soon as he started slipping...
2. Brian Wilceszki (spelling?): Twelve Timbers fail. Completed the finals course. Need I say more?
3. David "Flip" Rodriguez: Failing the Jumping Spider, given his record in the competition, was not what I expected out of him.

For me, DEFINITELY David Campbell considering I was there when he ran the course! I think he might be too old to win now . There's NO way David should have struggled on the WW. I even met him after his run, and he said his shoes slipped. I think that's also the reason why there were so many Jumping Spider fails!

Was it really the sand that got them? Or was that an excuse?

It might depend on the shoe, but I for example wore feiyues around the course and the sand/dust would not gtfo of them. Yes it was a problem at least for me.

I think he might be too old to win now . Yoshiyuki Okuyama made it to the final stage at 39. I'm pretty sure david is younger than him. There's no "he's too old". The only person that can use that excuse is Kuramochi.

Bad luck with the shoes is what cost DC, not lack of skill or being Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon.

Technically he was, it's just the handlers were douches and didn't let them (the japan stars) interact...

I thought he would rebound I wonder if that shoulder injury was also part of the issue. David also looked off in Vegas from the start which was weird he looked so good in the regional. Then Flip going out on the jumping spider like he did shocked me he looked so strong going into the competition better than in years past.

It's definitely the combo of David and Flip as well for me. To hear how bad it is for the wind and sand recently for the course, I think I have a better idea of what to wear now for running the course. I'll just need to find the right kind of style that's suited for how I usually have a spring in my step as a "toe runner".

I definitely wanted to see the blond girl in the bird outfit beat the first stage. She's strong and athletic enough to be the first woman to complete stage 1.

Jessie Graff has a good shot at being the ANW version of Tanabe Chie.

I was disappointed to see some of the stronger competitors go out on the half pipe attack because the rope was messed up and had way too much slack. They should have made it taut or given it a little play, but what they had was ridiculous.
