So recently an MMO I've been playing for awhile decided to go F2P. The game is Champions Online as I said in the title. champions-online.com/I guess this is just a minor promotion. If you're ever bored feel free to check it out. It's a slight change of pace from your regular MMO and it involves superheroes instead of boring sword and shield wielding D&D rip-offs You get to play the entire game for free. Every zone is available and you can reach the level cap as any normal paying player would be able to. The community is very kind and helpful, and I just think it's a fun game over-all.

Lol, I downloaded it a few weeks ago. Haven't played much of the game itself though, because I end up spending hours making a new character with its ridiculous amount of customization in character creation.

Yeah, the character creator has given me hours upon hours of enjoyment. It easily has the best customization in a game ever, especially for an MMO.

I honestly didn't know Runescape was still going. It's going strong too. They just brought back the wilderness, and I'm hooked onto the game. I am AMAZED at how much the game has improved over the years. I've been playing Runescape since it first started, and I have never seen such an improvement as I've have this time playing it.

A lot of people are going the FTP route. I know Dungeons and Dragons (DDO) started it and it did VERY well. (LOTRO) Lord of the Rings Online (which I'm playing atm) went FTP last year and Turbine got a 400% return .. you can play with less restrictions than (EQ2) Everquest 2 (I still have friends in that) and most people after a month pay for a higher level account anyway so it's working out pretty good. IMO that's the best way to do this since it gives players the ability to keep their character (rather than what happens when you do a trial in most MMO's) and since it's not a trial.. it can last as long as you want. IMO this is the preferred method for the future. You hear that SWTOR?? I'm hoping it is...

I can already tell you Champions is earning big money off of this switch. Before F2P there were about 6 instances, or zones of Millenium City to hold all of the players. The first few days of F2P that skyrocketed to 70, though of course there will be a fallout... on average it's up to 30 now. It IMO gives a LOT for being free. It's not a game too take really seriously, it's simply for fun. That's the big draw for a lot of the subscribers (such as myself). It's very carefree and doesn't involve super huge endgame competitive grind for gear.

Agreed. A GOOD FTP set up is important. EQ2 didn't do it correctly.. every single step of the way you are reminded how much you are missing. LOTRO is just enough to get you hooked and it's only 10 bucks a month if you sign up. I played COH (City of Heroes) for a while and liked it but it wasn't FTP. I was surprised Champions was so quickly.. I guess they read the trades about how well Turbine was doing and decided early to save the game that way. I still think Champions is a rip of COH but I digress

Not that it's an outright better game, but it has some features that I really like. The open power system (for subscribers) is really cool. I could use fire AND ice if I want. The F2P version of champions I think does pretty well. They take away something that a lot of people want, which is the ability to mix and match powersets. People see that and immediately want to subscribe. I can't even mention how many new subscribers they've gotten. It's obvious that once people got a nice look at the game, they wanted the stuff that only subscribers had. The open power-system is also daunting at first, so streamlining everything into typical MMO "classes" is smart and also encourages teaming. I don't know, I think they did a rather fairly good job and they're giving a LOT away for free. I've read a few articles about it and that seems to be the norm opinion. Infact, some people think they give TOO MUCH for free =p I also downloaded LOTR, but I havn't even touched it really since I've been having a lot of fun with the recent champions updates. Looking forward to Guild Wars 2, Blade and Soul and Star Wars.

Aahahahahah I thought I'd take a dig (and no they are not the same people that did both games.. they are rival games I just thought I'd put that out Granted COH is Old.. it shows. And it's simple (I think of it in the Guild Wars set up which is not bad at all... just not as complicated as something like Everquest or even WOW). FF14 is FTP but mostly because they totally effed up and broke the game.. well.. to be honest.. the game was broken in beta.. they are not reaping what they sow.. (nah I don't sound bitter after almost 6 years in FF11? Mwahahhahah). Honestly though.. 14 is broken and those arrogant bastards FINALLY FINALLY admitted it and are not charging a fee for it. Btw... do you listen to the MMO Report on G4TV.com? I'm playing LOTRO until SWTOR comes out or at least does stress test of beta. I'm still pissed they are letting kids who have no concept of beta testing in the game now.. it's a bitter pill to swallow.. they are just happy to play the game instead of actually "testing" the game. I won't pay for SWTOR until I test it though.. so I'll just wait for open beta. That's the only MMO I'm interested in atm. I won't pay for 2 though.. so I'll stay in LOTRO until something worth my time is up

Excuse me, Guinness, we need a check, most abbreviations in one thread at a time.
Anyway, I only play 5 MMOs, Maplestory, LoL(League of Legends), TMNF(Track Mania Nations Forever), another one called Football Superstars, and then another I won't mention. Tried to play this, but my computer totally crapped out.

Maplestory, LoL(League of Legends), TMNF(Track Mania Nations Forever), another one called Football Superstars, and then another I won't mention. LoL & TrackMania aren't MMOs. There's no persistent world to qualify them as MMOs, the closest they get is MO. I love both of those games btw, no hate. Let's see... MMOs I've played... currently playing in bold. - Anarchy Online - Champions Online - City of Villains - Dark Age of Camelot - Dungeons & Dragons Online - Earth & Beyond - EVE Online - EverQuest - EverQuest Online Adventures (PS2) (Beta) - Final Fantasy XI - Final Fantasy XIV (Beta) - Guild Wars - Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicles - PlanetSide - Priston Tale - Ragnarok Online - ROSE Online - RuneScape - Star Wars Galaxies - Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - World of WarcraftLooking forward to Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2, and Firefall. As for Free2Play, I'm both for and against it. Having played MMOs for a little over 10 years, i've grown accustomed to having to shell out $15/month per MMO, and sometimes I played 3 MMOs at once (WoW, Star Wars Galaxies, & PlanetSide). I've seen MMOs die from going F2P, but at the same time I've seen them grow immensely from going F2P. The ones that died going F2P were before Lord of the Rings Online made F2P a much more accessible option for MMOs. I sit on the fence when it comes to MMOs going F2P and don't demand that they be F2P on launch. P.S. - I think this thread has changed from "Champions Online goes Free to Play" to "The MMO Discussion Thread."

That's fine, I just wanted to let everyone know that a game that I play is going F2P And Arsenette, Cryptic studios took part in COH, who also makes champions. They have people on the champions staff who worked on COH. Just sayin' =p Also DCUO recently came out, however I have heard almost nothing but bad things about it. I'll stick to my champions.

Can't stand paying monthly. That's why I didn't get an Xbox 360.

Wow, I used to love runescape, but someone hacked my account and got it deleted. So now I never get to play again.
