We could go off of Sasuke 32. Announced late March, deadline for applications was early April, aired July 3rd.
If we go by this, we might see a late August air date.
So if we are hoping for 2 competitions this year they would have to announce 41 AND open applications soon after the tournament airs and cycle repeats, October filming December airing.
Honestly I'm willing to bet they are doing just the 40th competition this year and they want to film mid year to avoid it raining like it has EVERY YEAR FOR THE LAST 3 COMPETITIONS.
This coming from someone who doesn't know much about Japan weather patterns but.. I've noticed a trend

To be honest in terms of the weather, I'd still take October/November over, say, February, which is when a lot of the Golden Era 'Spring' tournaments, and most recently 33 and 35, were filmed, where it was freezing cold. Surprised no one caught pneumonia from falling in the water pool; another thought is that it would probably be more expensive to film in wintertime given that they'd have to heat the majority of the course and the water pits, otherwise it would be a genuine health hazard. Also, maybe this is just me, but the winter tournaments always seem, idk, more depressing looking?
And r/e the rain, the wettest month in Japan is actually mid-June to mid-July (known as Tsuyu) - I mean it rained in Sasuke 8, and on Sasuke 12's original filming date, both of which I'm pretty sure were in July. Sasuke 32 was also taped in late May and it was both damp as well as rainy. So I don't think not wanting to film in October or November was driven by the rain; I just feel as though they've been quite unlucky over the past couple of tournaments, or rather, they were lucky not to have had rain for the majority of preceding tournaments, which is why when it has been wet they've been pretty useless in terms of organisation. That said, how do you account for rain on Stage 1? All of the other stages you can at least partially tarp, but Stage 1 is out in the open, so if it rains you're screwed....
My hunch as to why they'd want to film earlier is potentially such that they could have what is an incredibly rare case; an anniversary tournament both in terms of number of tournaments and years. It wouldn't surprise me if they were shooting to air on the 25th anniversary (in terms of year) of Sasuke, which would be September 27. Either and/or the reception from 39 was so strong (32 million viewers, in other words, a quarter of the country) that Inui got the green light from TBS much sooner due to higher confidence.

The 32 million figure (this would be proportionately much more of the television viewing population, given a lot of Japan has moved on from TVs towards streaming) confuses me a lot, on Sasukepedia the rating for 39 is listed as 7.3% at 6pm and 10% at 7pm. They probably are dealing with averages but you would think if 32 million were viewing that would put that figure up into the late teens at least. Does view time factor, like someone just flicking the station wouldn't be counted in the average? Why is the viewership number so different to what the rating is reported as on Sasukepedia?

I dunno, I definitely saw somewhere that 32 million people watched Sasuke and I remember someone linking it to me in Japanese language, so I think those were TBS’ own quoted numbers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the figure was that 32 million people at least tuned into the show at any time during the broadcast, even if it was for a second…. Obvs it’s a good way to artificially inflate the perceived interest in the show without flat out lying, if that makes sense.
The numbers you quoted would’ve been snapshots of fan viewership at that exact second, so if 10% were watching at 7pm sharp; I wouldn’t be surprised if another 22% tuned it for a few minutes here and there. Especially if you consider that many would’ve only watched at a certain point for their favourite celebrity, then likely tuned out. I mean it was a 5 hour broadcast, so there’s a lot of time for randos to tune in and out at certain points.
