I'll concede that I'm playing devil's advocate here, but it's much easier to admit you made a mistake when you literally achieved Total Victory in the previous tournament.
I'm honestly surprised he had to point that out though. It seems like a pretty obvious disqualification to me.

And because it was the first time it happened, he was given chance by the producers to re-attempt Third Stage again, which Nagano refused. Pretty sure if he did it again, he will achieve second Kanzenseiha as he will attempt the broken Gliding Ring in this tournament, had it fixed and then he will attempt fully functional Gliding Ring in SASUKE 21. Given how he went through the Final Stage in SASUKE 23 despite just run First Stage twice, second Kanzenseiha is no doubt will be achieved in SASUKE 21. Sadly, he didn't feel hungry anymore and decide to DQed himself.

Actually I didn't specifically mean Sasuke 18. In life you often see people blame others or circumstances for their shortcomings. That definitely is true in some cases but in my biased kid opinion I never saw him angry, maybe rarely disappointed. Even when failing he showed great sportsmanship and admitted to making a mistake (not something that would DQ you but like the Jumping bars in Sasuke 14/Metal spin in Sasuke 15 type of mistake) with a smile on his face. That's something you rarely see and it impressed me.

Well, what he did is quite extraordinary, as he was in hospital just few weeks before the tournament. To be one of three to clear First Stage, and also act as Japan's Last Man Standing, that is something.

Only Nagano can fail the Final Stage on 4 of 5 attempts and still give a smile, Though he always had that determined look on his face when he was about to go attempt a stage, like in 12 and 19

In SASUKE 12, Nagano and Yamada made promise while sitting on Soritatsu Kabe before both of them attempting Second Stage to finally attempt Third Stage together. We all know how that ended. Nagano, Yamada, and I think some people on the scene ended up crying. But, show has to go on. Yamada stated in his interview after the third attempt *video was on YouTube for quite a long time, now it is gone* that he is sure Nagano can win it, and if he win it, that means he also win it too *I'm really sorry if I translate it wrong, I'm not fluent in Japanese*. That is why Nagano looks like man on a mission during Third Stage and Final Stage, as he now also carry Yamada's hope. This is seen very clearly when he was at the top of the tower, he kept thinking what went wrong with his run, and keep saying sorry even though Furutachi already convince him that his performance is excellent.

Wow, thanks for the amazing details! I remember seeing that emotional interview, just didn't know what exactly was said. That gives some context when in Sasuke 13 Nagano was reading the letter from Yamada before attempting final stage. It probably contained some encouragement.
Do you mind if I ask - how exactly did their friendship start? They are shown to be quite close as early as in Sasuke 9.

It was some BS thrown by TBS. Nagano and Yamada never best friend outside SASUKE *I mean, even if they did have real friendship, Nagano still had to spend 300+ days in the sea across a year, so I'm not sure they could grow their friendship*. Nagano did admire Yamada when he first see SASUKE *well, Yamada was main face back in early days*. Nagano was so nervous on the set during SASUKE 7 *well, given his personality*. He was too shy to ask people question or whatever. First person to welcome him to the set? Yamada. That is how the story began. TBS, after Kane Kosugi left, made the SASUKE All-Stars official in SASUKE 9 *the term was used already from SASUKE 6, it just that the membership was not certain at that time*. TBS see a chance to sell their 'friendship' story. So that is how it began. Turns out, Nagano did well too during SASUKE 9, and he was listed as fifth All-Stars in the next tournament *and the first instance when #99 was given to best performer in previous tournament. No, SASUKE 4 is not, Yamada got #100. Also, Omori Akira in SASUKE 2 doesn't count because he should be #100 too (as seen clearly in SASUKE 3), it just that Akiyama Kazuhiko just set the Quick Muscle's record of 307 push-ups in three minutes*. Because they are part of All-Stars, surely both of them had to be seen close together. You may ask, "But Nagano had Yamada picture in his boat during SASUKE 9?". No, it is also another BS by TBS. In fact, it wasn't his boat at all *it was too small in comparison when you see Nagano's boat during SASUKE 18 Navi*.

First person to welcome him to the set? Yamada. Was that in accidental or did TBS push him to do it? Nagano was a nobody at that point so how could anyone know he would be good?
Makes sense after Sasuke 9. I knew about the photoshoped picture on Nagano's boat. If I recall correctly, Nagano told TBS to stop but it was still occasionally shown.

I'm afraid only Nagano and Yamada could answer that question.... It is not photoshop picture. It was a real picture *or pictures, in this case, as there is two of them* brought by TBS to be taped into Nagano's 'boat'. Nagano can finally convince them to stop during SASUKE 18, which is after his Kanzenseiha. He was Grand Champion, surely a simple request like that will be granted.
