I don't get the viewpoint that the newer seasons are the worst... yeah, the presentation earlier on could use a lot of work, but the actual components that make up the show: obstacle design, production values, ninja pool, commentator quality... seemingly increase every year, along with format improvements too...
Maybe it's just because I didn't start watching until S7 and therefore aren't as nostalgic for the moments of the earlier seasons, but for me Seasons 4-6 just reek of mediocrity in their look, design, approach and results. Season 6 essentially rendered Seasons 4 and 5 pointless by regressing progress, and both of those seasons had their final results essentially tampered with by either incompetent obstacle design (Season 4's Stage 2, the breaking UCH Ledge in Season 5 etc..) or flat out results meddling. You had a course with almost no original ideas of its own, instead preferring to (badly) imitate Sasuke, and a ticking time bomb of a format that eventually blew up in their face.
I can forgive an abundance of sob stories, the old POM spoilers and other flaws because the central component: obstacle course action, is as good as it has ever been (all in my opinion).
I definitely agree that it was one of the worst, at least it had a good Vegas but the season as a whole sucked. I wouldn't say THE worst because 9 was worse and Season 10 is on pace to top it so far... I mean finals haven't been terrible so far but could be better but qualifiers were terrible and we'll see about Vegas when that airs...
The worst is surely season 1.
Season 1 had bad build and bad commentary but considering that was their first time out and didn't know what they were doing buys a bit of forgiveness, not to mention the fact at least it was about the runs and the obstacles, not some 5 minute profile about a 3 legged dog or some BS like that. Not to mention Sasuke 23 sure as hell didn't have Wingnut Alley
