I feared worse. I think SASUKE is at a point where it can build off of the successes of the last tournament to hype 35, especially if they invite Jessie back and get more skilled women on the show (who would have thought the Kent Weed Gambit would be so relevant?). That said I can't imagine TBS is willing to greenlight 2 more SASUKEs and KUNOICHIs next year and I imagine we're going down to 1 a piece, but this doesn't seem like the impending death that a 6 or 7 would.

I want to see hour by hour. I know it usually drops as the show goes on anyway, but I can't wait to how less receptive people were to 34 in comparison to 33, or the "worse tournament."

The website for comparison is here. www.videor.co.jp/tvrating/You may see SASUKE2017秋 again on the way bottom on the sports category. 5.1% The 5.1% rating is taken from the start (18:30) to 19:00 JST which was also mentioned in the article. The 9.0% rating is taken from 19:00 JST on wards. Besides, who does not fancy a game of soccer.

The men's national team is widely popular in Japan. The World Cup qualifier where Japan cemented their spot with a win over Australia got a 24.2 average with a high of 35 in September.
Anyway, as far as I can tell, the show ended up third in its slot. Most of the other variety shows in that slot don't show up on Video Research since they weren't high enough to crack the top ten but at least one not shown had a 10. NTV is just destroying everyone like Fuji was doing earlier in the decade. TBS has been consistently treading water as a whole this entire time. That first half hour is a throwaway whenever they have the show on Sunday's since it's going up against the generally consistent Sazae-san (so consistent that the time they dipped under a 9.0 it was news).

There was barely even any youtube (free) promotion. They could have a youtube channel and upload everyone's runs, especially those who got digested or cut. I think uploading the cut or digested runs would ease a lot of complaints about that stuff. Then year round just have some videos from the other events they do (if they are still doing any) - like a, "hey x competitor attended this festival and we had a Salmon Ladder so here's what went down" sort of thing. Them having Drew's runs uncut on facebook this year tells me the effort to at least upload cut runs is insanely easy. For the sake of fairness, I don't know anything about what their business policies/contractual obligations are in regards to this sort of thing. There could be limits on what they can show because of international sales agreements etc that I'm completely oblivious to.

Ratings by themselves are not the whole story. Remember how we got 2 tourneys a year.. it was the now dead Esquire deal that never panned out. Other factors are in play (a domestic promotion contract that was to run out in 2018 that since I'm not following anymore I don't know the status of) and let's not forget if NBC wants to play ball and restart the franchise here. So far NBC has seemed to be content in just greenlighting spots to Sasuke with no financial backing (hence the years of Drew having to pay his own way to got to Sasuke each time and Kacy having to use frequent flier miles to pay for her way as well). There may be a drastic change next year leading up to the Olympics if they managed to convince their sponsors that a sub 10 show with no future backing is worth keeping during that time. Who knows at this point.
