Thoughts are with you and your family arsenette, can't imagine what it must be like for you Thanks. It's still a couple hours away and they lost power. Luckily my generation and older remember Hugo, Gilbert and Georges so they know how to react. The younger ones are idiots doing hurricane parties and causing issues. I keep getting texts from my family and I keep sending them messages of where it is and if it's turning (which it didn't.. it's wobbled closer so that's annoying)..

Good luck to your family, hope they get through.
Just did a search on the hurricane, and... well.
I can't really relate because I literally live exactly one Great Lake above Ohio/Pennsylvania or whatnot, and I've never had a storm like that pass by. It must be pretty bad, especially Category 5.

Hey you get lake effect and Noreasters.. just think of one of those badboys without the snow. Pressure dropped lower than that and it had a lot of wind and rain. I still think Noreasters are worse than hurricanes because snow is heavier and lingers more! Spent all day texting family. Thanks to my OCD nature of watching maps and advisories I kept them apprised of the track of the storm via text. It's pulling away from the island now and while they will continue to get rain, they were spared the landfall of the storm (where the 185 mph winds are located - around the eye wall). It never hit the main island but just skirted up north. It's still windy (hurricane force) but they were spared the horrific winds that the lesser Antilles got. To get a grasp of the wind.. it's the same as a F4 tornado.. just sustained over a much larger area.. I feel terrible for the people in the Lesser Antilles. They lost contact with the first island hit - Barbuda. CNN is reporting 90% of the structures are destroyed. Been a stressful 48 hours so while it's not over.. I'm going to sleep.

Wow, a Delta flight landed and took-off from the San Juan airport in a span of 52 minutes just before Irma landed, which included unloading and loading passengers and the stuff they needed to do. The plane travelled between the outer band and the core going out.

But don't worry, I was 1st in my class at Top Gun. So....hold on to something."

Actually does the East Coast always have storms like this every year at this time? Not every year but it's a cycle of about every 20 years. Kids here don't remember them because ya'll would have been really small but I remember them well having either lived through them when I lived on the island of Puerto Rico or traveled through them or lived on the East Coast seeing these storms ride up the coast. Irma is really reminding me of Gilbert 1988 and Hugo 1989 in terms of intensity. Hugo devastated the islands and then decided to slam into the east coast (I think the Carolinas). I think the only one many of you would remember is Hurricane Sandy then Hurricane Irene before that (Links are SMF threads just on them). We may by end of the week actually have a hurricane Irma one. I'll ask the mods. This is far from over. It will be news when this sucker slams into the USA. Managed to get some sleep after learning that the eye didn't touch Puerto Rico. I spent the whole day texting my family who were doing just fine. I was their unofficial meteorologist and even one of my cousins I kept sending her the radar. LOL I kept her mind busy. They got hurricane winds but it's far different when you talk to someone who is used to these monsters. We all knew through.. if the storm didn't break up it's eye wall and replaced it.. Puerto Rico would have had a direct hit (would have taken the same path as Hugo but just as strong as Gilbert in which case it would have been horrifying). The replacement cycle caused the eye to shrink and shift 20 miles. Those 20 miles were crucial and it's path changed Juuuuuuuuust slightly. That just slightly was the difference between what Puerto Rico got and what the island of Barbuda, St. Martin, etc. got. You can look up what happened there. Those poor people omg..

Very glad to hear your family is OK, Arsenette. I saw a video of St Maarten and it looks like it was devastating. Here's hoping we get disaster help in a hurry to those affected.

St Maarten's airport is almost completely destroyed but they apparently started cleaning the runway as soon as they could and help is (or should be soon) arriving from metropolitan France.
TV news earlier kept showing people trying to contact friends and family living over in St Martin/St Barth but phone lines and power are down almost everywhere so it's hard to get information directly through/from civilians right now.

To make things worse, 2 more hurricanes are joining Irma in the Atlantic.
Hurricane Jose is about to hit Antigua and Barbuda, while Hurricane Katia is going to hit in Mexico. Let's all pray for those citizens. This is not getting any better at all.

Thanks Anshin for the thread consolidation! ♥
Update on the Caribbean, Jose is a Cat 2 and going up the Lesser Antilles.. again.. I'm hearing that Puerto Rico is getting some evacuated injured from the Virgin Islands since as of now they are expected to be out of the track this time.
Update on Irma. Currently going into the Bahamas - that's about 1,000 islands getting hammered by a Cat 5 hurricane head on. Prayers to all of those who can't fly out of it's way..
To my friends in Florida.. you are connected to the mainland... drive out.. fly out... run out.. anything.. GTFO of Florida. I have some stubborn friends who are only going to shelters and some who are literally (not a joke) planning hurricane parties... I'm banging my head up against the wall. Going to be a long frustrating weekend.

One of my artist friends lives in Florida and he's way too stubborn to leave saying, dealing with hurricanes is a matter of being properly prepared. DUDE JUST EVACUATE! O.O
