New this year, announced in May, CBS Sports in partnership with Tough Mudder will be bringing us Tough Mudder X - a 1-mile course featuring 10 obstacles and 10 workout zones.
The event took place on July 14. The preliminary heats will air this Sunday on August 27, with the finale airing the following Sunday on September 3, both parts on CBS.
I was originally going to post all of this in the Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge thread, but felt Tough Mudder X should have its own thread similar to the BattleFrog Championship Series.
Tangentially related...
For the past 3 to 4 years, NBC Sports has been covering the Spartan Race through a series of roughly 6 documentary-style episodes each year. Each episode features a major race in the US Championship Series finishing with the World Championship.
Starting this year, before TMX, CBS Sports in partnership with Tough Mudder has been airing America's Toughest Mudder (competitors run several laps through a looped course over 8 hours through the night and into the morning) which ends with World's Toughest Mudder (they will run for 24 hours). Like Spartan Race, these also air in documentary-style episodes.
The broadcast format is similar to Spartan Race, but the race format is different. I find Toughest Mudder more difficult to watch because much of each episode takes place overnight, and they wear these bright sometimes strobing head lamps. It's also difficult to keep track of where they are because they run several laps around the course over that long dark period, and by the time morning arrives for us to see stuff to try and make sense of things, the episode is nearly over. The competitors are scored based on some number of miles they complete in some amount of time within 8 hours. At least this keeps it different from Spartan Race.
