Didn't Matt say they were looking for just 8 celebs? It's supposed to be a modified 1 off special to go with Red Nose Day. So I am assuming they will change things so at least SOMEONE finishes.

TBF Team Ninja and college are done nearly the same time. The rest are done together as well. I would suspect they would do celebrity on one of the regionals. I'll be shocked if they put them in Vegas. I would assume that will happen before or after the California qualifier at universal studios, since most of the movie stars live there. All I can think about is how many injuries tend to happen with untrained people trying to do the course. For example if I were Tom Cruise's agent I probably would not want him doing something like that and risking injury and missing out on millions of dollars or work. So it will be interesting to see how that all plays out.

I'm anticipating a heavy "Saved By the Bell" alumni presence...

I'm curious about how Ashton Eaton did since he is a (retired) decathlete.

Edit: Okay, Mena Suvari rang a bell after going through the names for a 3rd time, I googled her, and it's Heather from American Pie. But that's it.

According to ANWNation you're the only one:
American Ninja Warrior fans have been craving it for years. Now, we’re FINALLY getting our celebrity edition!
No but seriously, is their sentence for real LOL? I get it that they want to hype it, but c'mon...
About the trained by: Each of the celebrities will be paired with an elite ninja who serves as both coach and cheerleader — helping them prepare mentally and physically for their run.
Translation: they'll just stand there and yell "come on, you can do it!"

Every movie and tv news site I go to daily had a huge article and headline about Stephen Amell being on it. Made him seem a lot bigger than he is. Jeff Dye is a funny dude, was fun on the show Better Late Than Never last year on NBC.

lol Natalie Duran is favored by the producers of this show for very little reason. I don't know who any of these "celebs" are.

The only one of the "Celebs" I've heard of is Stephen Amell, and I don't even watch Arrow... I've only seen that Salmon Ladder scene and that one match he had in WWE

For those wondering who the celebs are:
Ashton Eaton: Retired decathlete -- (2-time Olympic gold medalist (2012 & 2016 -- Third-ever back-to-back decathlon Olympic gold), World Record holder of decathlon and heptathlon)
Stephen Amell: Actor (Arrow, TMNT: Out of the Shadows -- famously shown doing the Salmon Ladder in scenes as Green Arrow, wrestled in WWE at their SummerSlam event in 2015)
Nick Swisher: Retired MLB player -- Played for five teams from 2004-2015, All-Star in 2010, won World Series with New York Yankees in 2009
Mena Suvari: Model/Actress (American Pie series, American Beauty, Six Feet Under, American Horror Story, South of Hell -- was the voice of Aerith in Kingdom Hearts II and FFVII: Advent Children)
Derek Hough: Professional ballroom dancer (6-time Dancing with the Stars champion which is a record amongst the pros, 2-time Emmy winner for routines he has choreographed)
Nikki Glaser: Comedian (hosted her own program on Comedy Central, called Not Safe with Nikki Glaser, had a role in Trainwreck, recurring contestant in @midnight, most wins amongst women contestants)
Natalie Morales: Journalist (Today Show anchor, Access Hollywood host, avid runner, including numerous New York City Marathons and triathlons)
Jeff Dye: Comedian (3rd place finalist in Last Comic Standing Season 6, hosted two series for MTV, designer for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition)
Erika Christensen: Actress (Traffic, Parenthood, Wicked City)

There's a reason why I didn't know who they were. LOL Oddly enough, once I got faces to the names I were unfamiliar with, I actually recognized everyone except Jeff Dye. Seems like everyone has a "NBC" connect as well. NBC covers the Olympics, so Eaton's an easy contact, Amell has long wanted to compete on the show (and thus will be the most promoted star), Swisher will be an announcer for Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge Season 2 in June, Hough is hosting a new NBC show himself, Glaser and Dye have been on Tonight Show, Morales works for NBC currently and Christensen was part of the main cast of Parenthood which was one of NBC's few semi-successful shows of the 2010s (consistently well received critically but never had a particularly large audience, but had enough for six seasons over five years although ratings declined past the pilot). Generally speaking, I was looking at a random tvline article and they had the line "Also set to navigate the Floating Steps and up to five other obstacles" so that's implying there's only doing six. So my theory is: Modified qualifying course, Amell clears and does the back half as a special challenge

lol Natalie Duran is favored by the producers of this show for very little reason. I don't know who any of these "celebs" are. Every time I hear an interview with casting, or a competitor discussing casting, they always advise prospective competitors to be interesting and show personality. Natalie does that well, and is good enough athletically to hang in there as a competitor, too.

Duran was one of the first YouTube vloggers (she took a hiatus for career/school purposes but restarted), she actually competed once before last season, so her improvement to qualify for City Finals is actually noteworthy. That, and she was in Team Ninja Warrior (which filmed before Season 8 did) and will be in Season 2. So she's been in the system. Also, with ANW's verified YouTube channel (not their old one they somewhat abandoned) her qualifying run is among the highest on the channel for last season. The only people with more views than her were Jessie Graff, Drew and Meagan.
It's like with calling the list of celebs, "celebs". Some people have had seemingly quieter careers (like the comedians) or did the bulk of their notable projects earlier than later in their careers (like Suvari), but you also have one of the world's best athletes who has only recently retired in Eaton, a solid career player in Swisher, Amell is one of the few bright spots in DC's cinematic universe (the TV universe is more well received than the film universe). Do I expect some ultra competitive showcase, no; it's for charity.
