We can't forget the one in the north! That was the one in 2011 correct? Also oh gosh a earthquake in the middle of Tokyo... so many deaths... and so many SASUKE competitors would be in the crossfire...

Yeah I try not to think of that .. but that is exactly what is predicted WITHIN the next 10-15 years.

Should give you a good idea of who felt what. This is how you read the map with descriptions of the 7 point intensity scale that only Japan uses in addition to the Richter scale.

Doing a cursory look at usgs. The Japan aftershocks are still going sub 5 but still going (that will go on for weeks sadly). Dammit.. Equador upgraded to 7.8 that is a SIGNIFICANT jump if you understand how they rate those numbers.. I'm really worried about that depth.. 19km for a quake that size could produce a tsunami especially since it is right off the coast..

Damn. I hope that Chile isn't affected much by the tsunami (if there is one)

I feel EXTREMELY tempted to make something (not online like a video or a drawing) for Shingo, send it to arsenette so she can give it to him. I'm so freaking stuck! XD

The majority of the damage from the 2011 Tohoku earthquake was caused by the tsunami. Buildings built from the 80s on, but especially after 1995 try to be built as earthquake proof as possible. Skyscrapers are built to sway with the movement rather than try to stand up against the force. From all accounts it's scary but it's better than the building collapsing. Homes, especially older homes are hit and miss. Old traditional homes have heavy tiled roofs and if the support of the house gets weak, could result in caving in.
Most reports compare this quake to the 1995 Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe rather than the 2011 quake. In that case, I believe a lot of the damage came from a combination of buildings collapsing and fire which is why they tell you to turn off your gas and circuit breaker before you evacuate. Also, if you are not directly near the epicenter, you will get a warning via mobile (you can't turn this off - even if your phone is set to silent it will go off) anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute before the tremor hits your area. That's enough time to move to a safer part of your home (do not run outside!). In the case of the Tohoku earthquake, the early warning system definitely saved lives.

Yeah that was really surprising people got warnings (those who were fortunate to live further away since that is how these work) on their phones. That was unheard of even a few years ago.
