As we all know, Nagano has hit 43 and it's around this time where the question of retirement comes in. Should he retire now or should he come back for SASUKE 32? And what will his decision be?
Coming off his SASUKE 31 first stage failure, there's definitely no shame in retiring, he doesn't really have much more to prove. But even at this point he's shown to be capable of putting up a good performance and get quite deep into stage 1.
Personally, I think he should retire now. The signs of decline are making themselves much clearer, from his warped wall failures to his injury in SASUKE 29. (I think his age had a part in it.) Arsenette also said that his heart wasn't fully committed in SASUKE 31. Additionally, the course is only going to get harder with Morimoto's win, and it will probably be harder for him, especially when it comes to the legs and stamina, should the course get longer as well. So at this juncture, I think he should hang up his tabi and retire.
Yes, Nagano outperformed Shingo and Takeda in SASUKE 31 but it was more of their poor decision making that did them in.
What do you guys think? Should Nagano retire, or come back for SASUKE 32? What would he do?

He doesn't need to end at his best because he has nothing to lose after many fails. People love him and he loves to meet with other competitors. However, after he retire, he should definitely stay with Sasuke as obstacle tester, designer or... director! Nagano for director!

I believe he should retire at this point before it gets even worse. if his heart isn't in it, he shouldn't be there. he apparently has only been competing the last few events because he's felt that he owes it to his family and his fans. that's not a good enough reason.
with that said I hope he's still on the sidelines cheering on Shingo and Takeda while they're still competing.

It'll be an extremely tough decision but unfortunately everyone is going to retire at some point... Nagano has been a staple competitor since SASUKE 7, never missing a performance but at 43 he just isn't young anymore. I mean yeah Okuyama managed for a while but even Nagano knows when it's time to throw in the towel and call it quits... It's up to him... I say... maybe one more...

I can't see any of the three retiring, but certainly their training is taking a backseat to their personal lives at this point. I think it's a foregone conclusion that none of these three will ever achieve kanzenseiha again and it's an outside shot they'll even get to the Third Stage, but at this point it's not about that for the All-Stars. Their love of the sport will keep them coming back to SASUKE for as long as their bodies will allow it.

He's been asked to come back so we'll see what happens. He won't come back just to watch. It already takes a lot out of him and time away from his family just to fly to the show. If he retires, you won't see him again. Agreed that he shouldn't be there if his heart isn't into it, however I'd love to him to leave on a high note.

IMO Nagano should retire when he does feel like that way. Not when some couple of internet-nerds say so.

When Nagano retires, he retires. It doesn't matter what I think. But for all we know, he's on the fence whether to retire or not.

Nagano hasn't been the same since SASUKE 23. He has only passed Stage 1 twice in the last 8 tournaments. I think it's time for him to retire soon. It's Stage 2 or bust next time around...

Whilst it will be , IMHO, a very emotional time when he does retire, I can understand why he might be thinking about it. He's already away from his family on the boat for a lot of time, and obviously time is catching up with him (that said I wish I had 1/10th of his ability even now as we're almost the same age!).
Hard as it will be for the fans (especially those of us around here), I think it would be better for him to make a clean break of it at some point. If after a break (and assuming Sasuke is still running..), there's nothing to say he couldn't come back - I'm sure no one would have to think twice about letting him run the course again.

Obviously different circumstances but Tiger Woods has said before that when he feels like he can't win anymore that he would quit. Nagano may be in that situation. I'm not sure if he thinks he can do it anymore.

next year, he will be 44. i would say, i think he should come back for the kanzen-renewal tournament, just to try out the obstacles, and see how far he gets. if he isn't able to do it anymore next year, then i would definitely say that he should retire. but a new tournament, with completely new obstacles, nagano should see how well he does.

The signs of decline are making themselves much clearer, from his warped wall failures to his injury in SASUKE 29. (I think his age had a part in it.) Actually, his injury in 29 was because he overdid the Long Jump. He was nervous about the obstacle so he put too much force into it. So when he took off, he pulled it. It really had nothing to do with his age. However, him being as old as he is he doesn't recover as quickly as he used to so I think this may be one of the reasons he wishes to retire. Remember he has a job to do as a fisherman and he can't do it if he's injured.

Nagano has nothing else to prove. I only hope he has a "proper" going-away tournament. I wouldn't mind seeing him wear #100, and give people hugs before his run, and be emotional, and that kind of stuff. It would be cool to tell fans, "Hey, this is my last attempt, lets have some fun, it's been great, love you all, blah blah blah", and give the fans (both in-person and viewers) an opportunity to say their good-byes. That would be pretty cool.
That being said, Nagano can do whatever the hell he wants, cus he's... well, Nagano.

I think we can all agree that ultimately it's his decision whether he wants to keep going or not. I guess when the time does come it will be the equivalent of a hall of famer retiring from his sport. Nagano's like the Jordan of sasuke in that sense of being so respected and loved.
That being being said, I think his family and the rest of the sasuke community would have a bearing of some degree on his decision.
If there's ever a SASUKE hall of fame, I support Nagano for first inductee.

Well, ultimately we're going to have to prepare to see a new era of sasuke which nagano won't directly be a part of.

Well I would definitely like to see him continue, sasuke would not be same without him, Takeda should probably retire instead.

It's times like this where you can't help but appreciate how Yamada came back tournament after tournament despite failing stage 1 each time. That takes some serious guts.

It's times like this where you can't help but appreciate how Yamada came back tournament after tournament despite failing stage 1 each time. That takes some serious guts. That's the reason I like him. But Nagano is already pretty good at failing as well. Some people often say something like "I saw more than was in Sasuke and so I don't like him." However, it is not possible to hate someone based just others' opinions. It's his determination and not giving up that he should be known for. And, as I mentioned in the monkey thread, if he is allowed to walk along the course with Gundan or monkey while not even competing, the argument couldn't be so bad. Let's talk about the other Mr. Sasuke (well, their commitment is the reason for these titles). His last start may be in 32 (in which Masato will hopefully finally destroy the wall or at least the death combo). And what next? His company will lose mascot. His children will grow up and maybe ten years later, in 2026 they will join Sasuke 42. Will he coach them? Or will they join Gundan? I am not sure whether Nagano should become a coach because he probably isn't much technique or obstacle training oriented which seems to be important for future competitors. He can tech them about using a ship for training. But still better than leaving Sasuke. Other possible roles are obstacle testing/making or directing whole Sasuke
