Just posted on their Facebook. Yes.. that's the Sasuke 30 DVD.. and yes.. it's Japan only (we don't share same region as Japan in DVD). I'm working on getting an international release but the odds are slim if TBS doesn't think it will sell. (work in progress and still figuring out how to do it) This will be a huge box set just for 30 with every single run and behind the scenes and expected to be very expensive.

Still, that's quite significant, I think. No need for Morimoto to pirate this tournament! On a serious note, it's good news for Sasuke, I think. Do they usually do huge box sets like this for shows that are on the verge of collapse?

Well they are trying to reboot the series and help Sasuke Rising officially rise out of the ashes. So part of that is getting into the physical media market. They can't with pre 27 stuff so we'll see how this goes. It will be expensive so not sure how many will invest in it instead of pirating it.

It's too bad it's only a DVD though - if it was also released on Blu-Ray, then the Americas as well as other eastern Asian countries could also view it, assuming that it's region-coded (if the DVD or a hypothetical Blu-Ray was region-free, then anywhere that handles NTSC should be cool). Sasuke 30 was filmed in HD presumably, so a Blu-Ray would be possible, but not necessarily economically feasible. (sighs)

but not necessarily economically feasible.(sighs) Bingo.. it's not that much more expensive but TBS doesn't think so. Whoever is their in house author is probably overpricing them. Working on a solution for it though.. but it will take time.

The cheapest DVDs on the TBS site are 2500 yen. I'd expect a multi-DVD set to be around 5000 yen (just under fifty dollars for most people).
Region coding is not a big thing anymore though. If you buy lots of Region 2 DVDs, getting an external dvd drive and just set it to Region 2. Costs thirty dollars or so. (Note: This has worked with my Japanese desktop - set to Region 2 - with an external dvd drive set to Region to watch Simpsons DVDs from the US)
The main thing is getting the TBS shop to deliver overseas (which it doesn't, if I recall correctly).
Oh, and nothing is up at the TBS shop yet. The announcement was just that a DVD was forthcoming, not that it was available yet (just for clarification).

Right. I heard 6 DVD's for the box but that's not finalized and the rumored date was sometime near March?

LMAO even cut from the DVD's? That's hilarious. In all seriousness though, the DVD's are a great idea.

Right. I heard 6 DVD's for the box but that's not finalized and the rumored date was sometime near March? Oh. Six dvds is different. That would push it towards drama territory so probably at least 15,000 yen (just under a hundred fifty dollars). Unless one of those discs is the original broadcast, that would mean they aren't putting anything out for DVD rental either. Specialty dvds are pretty expensive here. For example, most wrestling dvds are usually fifty dollars for a regular show (that might be clipped from four hours to three or two and a half). On the other hand, if they get everyone involved to buy their own set just to own their runs, that would be 99 sets at least.

Inui is quite worried that they are pricing themselves right out of the market by going hog wild on it. Not sure where it stands now but he's trying to pare it down a bit to keep it within everyone's budget. Not only that, if people are put off by the price and it doesn't sell TBS won't make another set for fear of losing even more money. So it's a bit of a quandary.. And yes.. Yamada is cut even from the DVD.

Because the train of Yamada was wrecked years ago. Oh I do hope they can ship overseas I would pay for it full if I could!

Well, he is on screen so maybe he'll buy it anyway.
I really see no need to release a box set. For most of the dramas, the reason for the box sets is to give hardcore fans extra because everyone else can either watch the show (almost always dramas) by net on-demand or by dvd (unlike the US, the dvd rental market in Japan is still around - how healthy it is is hard to tell. Anecdotally, although stores have closed it seems like they are not going extinct yet).

I have ideas on what to do for an international release but that's up in the air right now. Originally I wanted to do a petition to get it here but that won't solve the problem that exists now (long story) so I'm going with my plan b and will keep you guys updated. As for you guys in Japan I'd say buy it and let us know how it turned out! At least if it's sold well in Japan they will keep doing it. I'd personally ask Inui directly if an affordable non-box alternative will be available so he can send that over to TBS. (Inui is not the one producing it but the one who will ultimately have to edit this monster into one cohesive set). Because the train of Yamada was wrecked years ago. Oh I do hope they can ship overseas I would pay for it full if I could! Unless you have a Region 2 DVD player it won't work anyway. Let alone shipping to USA which they haven't done in the past even with T'Shirts!

By the way, the red button below the Information part about the DVD on the SASUKE RISING page is from people to receive notifications about the DVD from the TBS ishop. Not sure if they'll use it to spam you also but it's possible.

Is there any possibility of a digital international release on the TBS page (similar to a service such as iTunes)? That would allow foreigners to buy everything without having to worry about regional playback issues, and TBS wouldn't have to deal with going through some of the additional hassles of an international release via physical copies of DVDs.

TBS is the only one that can answer that question.
