Good job although I don't think Joe's wife going through was a security breach, NBC probably encouraged it (maybe not jumping in the water but still lol), I've been to two regionals and they usually try to round up loved ones to try to walk alongside them on the course so this is probably a similar situation.

Someone jumped in the water in Stage 2 of ANW 6. They probably do encourage it.

After seeing your argument I have to agree with you letting TBS know never to send the Japanese back to ANW. They really are treated unfairly... I'm really starting to hate NBC now a days thanks to what was enlightened on this show now and before.

If you know Ryo failed the Flying Bar in USA vs Japan why did you say he cleared? Did you mean won the heat? But good job on the blog, even if the circumstances of the event itself were so shady

I think they should replace this with a SASUKE championship every year.It would be like ASEAN cup but every year and every four years the ASEAN cup.

I love how Joe's method of defending himself from being called a douche was to be an even bigger douche. Well played, sir. I want so much to reply to his comment and call him out for being such a pompous idiot.
The way NBC treated this "competition" was just disgusting. I hope no Sasuke competitors ever have to have any sort of dealings with ANW again. ANW has diverged so far from its source material that it has become unrecognizable. At this point I just never want to see it equated with or spoken of in the same breath as Sasuke again.
Arsenette, awesome job with the blog. Way to soldier through something you'd probably rather not even think about. I do have to disagree with you on one point though. First of all, to make it clear, I hate the dub just as much as you do. To me, seeing that made me feel like we'd gone back in time. However, I have to disagree with your assertion that the presence of accents suggests a lack of education. I've studied a lot of linguistics and second language acquisition and pedagogy, and in no way is the presence of an accent indicative of a lack of education or an inability to speak the language well. If a second language is learned after adolescence, it is next to impossible to eliminate an accent no matter how much education one has. I've heard non-native English speakers who can speak with eloquence that suggests a greater mastery of the English language than most natives, and yet they retain an accent. You mentioned that English is your second language. If you are able to speak it without an accent then I would be willing to bet that you've been speaking it from a young age.
The reason I take issue with your accusation of the speakers as being uneducated is that you're discrediting everyone who's learned a language after childhood. The only Japanese national I know that speaks English without an accent has lived in America since he was three. That's not to say that I don't know other Japanese that speak good English, but they do have an accent. Just like I've never met a non-Japanese that speaks Japanese without an accent. That doesn't mean they're not good at the language. What I've noticed with language learners is that generally if they're understandable, then elimination of accent takes pretty low priority in their study of the language.

I don't think Arsenette was objecting to the accents, but rather to the fact that the "accents" they used in the dubs were meant to be stereotypical of foreigners. It was the intent behind the dub. NBC intensified the "accents." It was meant to make the Japanese guys seem like the stereotype of uneducated foreigners.

Thanks Tiger that's my point exactly and succinctly. The focus should be on the actual words the competitors say. Not be distracted by the fake Japanese and Italian accents. I honestly would have ignored it if they just used someone with a heavy accent for the Japanese. It could have been just the person they hired for it.. But.. when I heard the stereotypical Italian accent.. THEN I took offense to it because it was deliberate. The bigger issue lost was the fact that while we were distracted by the broken English, they changed what was said by the competitors and because the slick editing and their original voices were not left in tact, we couldn't even show where they went astray (like in previous years).
As for the other.. yeah.. I laughed a good 10 minutes when I read Joe's comment. I literally just shook my head and laughed. Hubby thought I was finally cracking up because I was coughing from laughing so hard at like 5 am. LOL Still though, I think by now people know why ANW irritates me. It was just beautiful to see him out himself as a douche when all I had was the NBC image they wanted to portray. Yikes.
We'll see what happens next year. I don't have control over anything, though I'm at least happy that my views are entertained. They know I'm of the Sasuke crowd and not the ANW crowd (which to them is an asset), but I do not represent the majority of ANW people. They will make the best business/financial decision should they chose to do this again next year. I know TBS will impose stricter conditions and I know some of the Japanese competitors want to return. The others don't. We still got a year to go. NBC always last minute organizes with this event. It's not their priority. ANW is.

What did Joe do to deserve being called a douche? I think I'm missing something here. Did he do something on twitter?

Arsenette, I see where you're coming from now. Here's a random historical thought. I think it used to be pretty standard practice in movies and such to have people speaking in an accent to indicate that they were speaking in that foreign language (e.g. they'd have people speaking English in a French accent to show that they're speaking French). Nowadays they generally have them actually speaking the foreign language and use subtitles for translation. I see this as forward progression. When I saw the dubs on the USA vs. World special it reminded me of that old system, which seemed to me a step backward. It almost seems to go along with the stereotypical ignorant American attitude that they seem to be somewhat catering to in the show. "I don't wanna hear people talking in jibberish or have to read what they're saying. Make them speak American like the rest of us." I do however agree that the main motivation behind the dub was so they could say whatever they wanted instead of actually translating (or more like mistranslating and having it noticed. I remember watching last year's special, reading the subtitles and thinking, "Uhh, that's not what he said.")
Yeah MattyRox definitely go check out Joe's comment. It's something else.

Joe's comment was so mild haha. No offense Arsenette, but you gotta take a few deep breaths and read his comment again, you are the one being really hostile here. "Shots Fired"? Give me a break.
Everyone needs to calm down and take it down a few notches, and turn, and swing to the notch on the other side, and continue down a few more notches.

Gotta kinda agree with this, Joe barely said anything, though if his comment was supposed to be defending everything NBC did then he failed miserably. I don't really agree with what he was saying and he did sound like too much of an apologist for NBC, but it seems like arsenette took his comment as a personal attack at some of the competitors, which I didn't get from his comment. Kinda makes you wonder though, the heck did he defend NBC for? It sounded like something he'd be paid to say @_@ Also him just commenting without really denying anything kinda indirectly confirms everything. Not saying arsenette was likely to be spewing BS about the doctored results, but believe half of what you see, none of what you read, etc.

I think Joe just didn't want to get into the complete politics of Sasuke, and just made a blanket "who cares" statement. I don't agree with that, I fully want a fair competition with shots of the competitors that accurately portray their feelings AT THAT moment, as does everyone else. I think Joe probably agrees too.
With that said, if people think he looked like a douche here, look at Arsenette's comments about Joe's backstory, his run, and his wife's run into the water. Pretty negative, snarky comments that are far below what is generally a fantastic blog.
No one else I knew who saw his wife jump in the water said anything negative about it. It was totally cute and innocent. Arsenette, what was stupid, or as you put it "looked stupid" about that? You don't seem to have very much love for the American competitors here. Your rightful negativity towards NBC does spew into your comments on competitors runs. I know you are better than that.

LOL the comment sounded like a politician running for office. A flip, a slander and then a vote for me in November all in the same breath. Giggles. And yes agreed with Rated.. if he was there to defend NBC for altering the results then he failed miserably. I know he only took offense to me saying that he blamed his friends for his failure (even though that's EXACTLY what he said in the fluff piece). Seems he was rattled that I said "classy". Oh and the chain grab because he panicked and he wanted a pass. Other than that his comment was nothing more than 'zomg stop hating on me I panicked, threw everyone under the bus but only I can say it and zomg the Japanese cheated tooooooo' Seriously.. I was cackling for 10 minutes. Gave my husband a good laugh at 5 am this morning. Also agreed Rated that he did confirm it that he didn't deny it happened. Glad someone from the team (other than Japan) confirmed publicly that it was exactly what I was told privately. LOL Edit: Because I was posting at the same time. I yelled at Levi for jumping in because I thought it was stupid... and I thought her jumping in was stupid.. hell even JOE thought it was stupid. Lighten up I'm consistent. Unless you fall from doing the course you don't belong in the water. (or you won and you managed to stay dry and your friends dunk you in because they are being bastards ) As for my comments on the fluff piece? HE SAID HE FAILED BECAUSE HE LISTENED TO HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY.. how the hell am I the villain here? Go back and listen to it. All I said was "classy" and I'm a douche?
