FWIW: (although I did come up with a movie rating system as a result of this, let me know what you think) Formula is Aggregate*(Box office/250) with a 20 pt bonus for an Oscar nom, 50 pt bonus for an Oscar win, and minus half those for the Razzies. ...and back to music now?

IMO, the primary reason for why this song didn't "fit" SASUKE was because the portion of it which they used was a lyrical piece. Any part of a song used on SASUKE which isn't instrumental (regardless of the language of its lyrics) generally seems distracting from the actual dialogue of the program. In fact, IIRC that's one of the fundamental rules I learned about background music within such forms of media (television programs, films, etc.) when I took a studio/film production class in high school. There are of course some notable exceptions to this rule, but I don't see why this was the case with the Taylor Swift song.
BTW, why was that particular song used for that competitor's introduction anyway? Does he have some sort of connection to the American pop music industry?

Heh you can ask him about the link to certain songs. I know he gets whatever TBS has a license for. I know they got in trouble a while back for using music that was NOT allowed to be used outside of it's original purpose (cough Pearl Harbor cough) and paid dearly for it. So I assume they have a fair use license for it and just chose it because they like the song or the sound of it. I know we are the part of the very small minority of crazy people to try to identify the songs. Maybe they thought a typical Japanese person wouldn't recognize her? I have no idea how popular Taylor Swift is outside of the USA.

No harm in trying, I guess. Also, I find it weird that despite the trouble which the Pearl Harbor music they used caused them, it continued to be used by TBS for another 5 years. Unless it's something that wasn't noticed until later on, it strikes me as odd that it kept being included in broadcasts for so long.

I already have a laundry list to ask him so I limit to my own questions. I get asked a lot of questions to give him by proxy through my blog and I don't do that as a matter of course. He's open to everyone and if he decides to follow you then you have access that way. Otherwise try to see if you can get him publicly through twitter or his Facebook. Sorry. I get a lot of questions thrown at me because he's given me that window. It's bad enough when I do manage to get a Skype in (every couple of months or so) it's so long just with my own questions. Just hang in there. He does see you through twitter! Good luck and let us know.
As for the Pearl Harbor thing. To my knowledge it was only when M9 was around. I haven't heard it since btw. Could have been because M9 was sued directly and not TBS.

Re: Sugaya and his theme song: since it was also used for his theme music in Sports Danshi Grand Prix, I ended up poking about to see what Terrace House, the show he was on, was. That was actually a reality show on TBS, and that Taylor Swift song was evidently the theme song. Evidently as well, IRL he's an aspiring firefighter, or at least that what TBS said on the show.
