Keep ALL discussion in each city's thread. April 5 & 6 – Venice Beach Matt Iseman TweetNow that it's upon us I decided to put threads for these. For those who remember from last year, these are the threads that include discussion on obstacles, competitors as we find them and any results. Please keep all discussion of each city in these threads ONLY and not spread out over the ANW5 board. That includes "David Campbell's run", etc. Remember that not everyone likes spoilers so keep that in mind that many will wait until the official NBC/Esquire airings later in the summer.

Reports for somebody on site say that there are 6 steps being set up for the first obstacle. Probably more like the National Finals at AANW4 than the traditional Quad Steps in recent years. Good news as this is most likely easier ;-)

I saw a large metal ring on the cam near the start of the course--about the proper size for a circle slider, but it may just be the ring that the log grip is suspended from.

I was really hoping that they would get rid of the Log Grip this year, but it looks like it's staying.
There were also talks that the Rolling Escargot would be part of the course - I don't know how likely that actually is.

Yea was hoping for some different or "new" obstacles.
But oh well.

CONFIRMED: Sextuple Steps have replaced the Quad Steps.
Also hearing reports that the Log Grip is back.

We're talking REAL sextuple steps right? Not that s*** from ANW1?

I wonder how far about the Sextuple Steps are. My guess is that this is substantially easier than the Quad Steps, which aren't SO hard actually, but they have the capacity to reach up and trip even the best competitor at any moment (see: Meeuwenberg, Levi). A lot of us will sleep a lot easier at night without the Quad Steps looming there to potentially humiliate us as the very first obstacle!

A lot of us will sleep a lot easier at night without the Quad Steps looming there to potentially humiliate us as the very first obstacle! I'm not sure if it'll help me sleep much easier at night: I've imagined myself failing every single obstacle. One the other hand, I've also imagined myself passing every single obstacle. Yeah, my imaginary psychic powers totally suck--they predict every single possible timeline, and that's just useless. Well, I guess they're not totally useless... I can guarantee that there will not be a volcanic eruption in the U.S. during any of my potential attempts. The silver lining to having made my own set is that I used Chris Wilczewski's blueprint for the short and narrow steps (2 1/2 feet wide), so I can just scoot them closer together for practicing part of the sextuple steps.

I've imagined myself failing every single obstacle. One the other hand, I've also imagined myself passing every single obstacle. Hahaha, I think we've all been there. I always run every single possible scenario in my head, and I wont even be able to run the course for about another 3 years.

It seems like the structure of the course turns to the left for some reason.

By the way, I don't want to throw you off - the Sextuple Steps are NOT the Rokudantobi. There are six actual sloped platforms of unknown width. Hence why I compared the Sextuple Steps to the Quad Steps: if the Quad Steps are the Godantobi, these Sextuple Steps are more so a Nanadantobi (sevenfold jump).

Philip I think that's the perspective, I remember watching ANW4 on that very cam and it was at an angle kind of off to the side, you could see people from the Log Grip through the Warped Wall. Compare that shot to this shot (that also still is relevant for viewing instructions), pretty much the same, there's just less set up in your shot BTW unrelated but kind of ANW related, in regards to what you said RC, I realized the naming of the ANW steps the other night. How ANW1 had "Quintple Steps" despite being more set up like huge Rokudantobi and how ANW2-4 had set of huge Godantobi called Quad Steps, the naming actually makes sense, because in the real obstacles, the jump from the last step to the platform is counted, but in ANW qualifiers you can pretty much just step off from the last step. So them calling those "Quintuple Steps" and "Quad Steps" technically isn't incorrect in a way.

these Sextuple Steps are more so a Nanadantobi (sevenfold jump). Good, they're not a shichidantobi; that would just be bad luck. It seems like the structure of the course turns to the left for some reason. I read something somewhere (may have been the tickets page, or some Venice page) about a more "park-friendly" version of the course. I'm guessing they implemented right-angle turns into the course between obstacles to reduce the extents of the course's footprint for locations that may be length-constrained. (Like a square park as opposed to a rectangular park with at least one long edge.)

Has anybody in the west coast region gotten a call back to compete this year? Just wondering how well organized they're going to be this year. I think the competition starts Fri the 5th ans Sat the 6th.

They have been organized in that if you email them they do respond within 24 hours.

Somebody on the ground in Venice is reporting what looks to be a cliff-hanger after the salmon ladder. That seems ridiculous to me. Any intel from any of our ninjas on the ground there?
